In this video Radio DJ Dan Lyons explains the two things you need to to when making a podcast to get the best quality sound from your audio.
Check out my blog - www.howtomakepo...
Equalization has been removed from Audacity, superseded by the two new effects:
Filter Curve - uses drawn curves for the equalization
Graphic EQ - users sliders for the equalization (similar to hardware graphic equalizers)
Damn this guy has a Pro Voice.....
Or does he just have a great mic and editing skills? We will never know..
Thank you so much for this superb tutorial. You are a very gifted teacher! You waste no words and you do not numb the listener with a repetitive introduction. I have found and enjoyed another gem! You may consider illuminating 'scrubbing' in audacity. I wish I could interview the 44 people who disliked the tutorial.
Thank you so much for this. We have done 80 episodes and never even knew about EQ and compression. We were getting frustrated sounding so uneven and harsh even using decent mics and pop filters. So happy to have found this and a little ashamed for having not found it sooner!
I loved your explanation about each part of the equalization frequency.
I would, for one! So many audcaity tutorials don't really show a lot, or need to follow their own advice on recording as they're nearly impossible to understand while talking during the video. You provide clear explaination, and are very easy to follow along to. If you offered tutorials, I would absolutely follow.
Opposed to previous 10 vids on topic, this one finally doesn't disappoint.
Clean & Clear Tutorial👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Now I clearly understand what is Compressor & Equalization. Thank You & More Power To Your Channel
Really helpful video, especially the part on compression, which I haven't seen explained for people unfamiliar with the concept before.
Awesome tutorial, helped me understand the mystery behind Audacity's compressor.
Do you have more such tutorial videos about Audacity?
yours was the best tutorial ive come across for audacity, you really helped me alot with this video and i thank you a lot, now i know ways to make my music sound like it was produced in a million dollar studio and it sounds just as great, thank you, please teach us more
Great tutorial. Very helpful without getting into the weeds. One suggestion. Let us here the audio before and after applying the effects to hear the difference. Other than that it was great and not surprisingly the audio on the video was a joy to listen to. I'm always amazed at some of the sound editing videos I've listened to that sounded like the guy was talking into a tin cup.
Thanks for the video, this helps people to understand threshold and how to use a compressor
Dan thank you very much. I have to learn a lot about audio and sound. I am using audacity. I found your tutorial very beneficial. I was sorry to see that you stopped adding videos 4 years ago. If you read this and are offering advice elsewhere please let me know
All the Best
Larry
This was very well explained and super helpful as I process some old oral history tapes! Thank you!
Thank you so much for explaining as I often found it difficult to get the sound right throughout an interview.
Subscribed and looking forward to more tutorials.
Great information and video. I was crushing my audio with too much compression. Now I can clearly hear an improvement thanks to your help.
Just goes to show what you can do with a 'free' programme! It's the creativity, and thanks for the tutorial!
Very glad to have come across your video, thanks for making it. I now more clearly comprehend when the compression and equalization effects should be used. In particular, I expect to be using the compressor a great deal.
Really clear, pleasant lesson to watch. Well done brother. Thanks.
Excellent teacher!!
Thanks for this video! Just got my first proper microphone (Rode NT1-A) and was having a little trouble equalizing it to my voice, this really helped!
Eloquent presentation, you are a great teacher, made so man things clear to me no pun intended.
thank you so very much for your explanations EQUALIZATION makes a WORLD of DIFFERENCE :)
Thanks for the tips Dan! I prefer to roll off some of the annoying frequencies, before doing any boosting, but your video was still interesting and insightful.
To anyone reading this you're not supposed to boost the frequencies like he has here, it's better to take frequencies out and then boost everything later when it's done.
Agreed...
Finally someone who gets it! You should never boost low ends or it will sound muddy
Totally agree with your statement. An other useless video. The master of distortion and mud mix.
Can you guys recommend a really good video of what to do?
This is outdated information from the analog era. There is absolutely zero downside to boosting digitally sampled audio.
Terrific lesson! Thanks so much.
Thank you! Been working on my vocals with no idea what I was doing, great explanation of purposes and all.
Thanks for the explanation on the compressor and equalization effects!!! Excellent!!!!
thanks alot ive been recording on audacity for years but i always have to send my audio to engineers and pay them to mix my songs i do for my pro albums, now i can do most of it myself, everything other the the de-essers
Easy to listen too. Knowledge gently delievered
thanks for this video, i've had Audacity for years on my computer, but i havent done alott ofthe equalitation things, and this has helped alot
thanks for sharing ur ideals and techniques. great video for wannabe and beginners like me on mixing
Which version of Audacity do you have? I don't have those pinpoint options on the EQ
good tutorial, clear explanation. also one of the few eq and compression videos that don't require you to listen to somebodies terrible singing
I found this very helpful. I thank you!
You are very professional. Easy to follow!
This is really helpful. Would these same principles apply to acoustic instruments like a guitar, piano and drums? Thanks.
The low battery is giving me minor anxiety. Thanks for the video though.
Great information! Thank you for sharing and making it easy to understand.
Great video. You're really good at this
awesome turtorial, thanks a lot!!!
I really enjoyed this!
thank you for making this video! the part about compressing help me out so much! keep doing what you're doing
Very helpful and well explained. thank you
Great video....Thanks....John
Thank you so much!!! so very helpful
i have a old tape that has been taped over yet you can hear the original recording in the background how do i amplify background music ?
Great work, very superb lesson
Wow man, you really explain so good!
Thank you! You totally helped me with a brief explanation :D
In audacity, you can change the waveform view to logarithmic db view. That way, you can see exactly where you need to start compression.
Very well explained. Thank you!
It could be noise in the room (fan, air conditioner wind etc) it can also be the echo of your voice it passes thru the walls and goes back to the mic, and if its not any of that idk, what I do is use the noise removal in the effects within audacity grab a small part of the track and then the entire track (I hope you understood all I wrote xD )
Thank you very much. This has helped me a lot with a long recording I did.
You're the man, Dan!
This video helped out with my vocal quality a lot. Thank you for creating this video and uploading it onto UA-cam. It works wonders! :^)
Excellent explanation thank you.
Dan, Great job. Thank you. Please make more instructionals on Audacity!!
great video, great voice ... and very informative. Thanks.
I'm a novice at this stuff. Couple questions. I'm doing music--vocal acoustic guitars, etc. :
Do compression first, eq first, or doesn't matter?
Does what goes for vocals here also bssically go for instruments?
Thx.
Thankyou! Your a good teacher!!! I used the tricks you said in this video and it works on my recording!!! :D
would it be easier buying a compressor like a dbx compressor ?Cause i want something that can compress my voice at the same time I'm rapping ? I wounder if i buy a real compressor will it compress my voice at the same time I'm rapping ?
Thanks so much. I feel as a layperson that I can use these tools better.
i have all my settings exactly the same, but my audio lvls rise? the entire audio shoots up drastically. plz someone help, also i don't see "noise floor" in your compressor settings? mine is set at "40 noise floor" HELP
Did you get this problem fixed? I'm having the exact same issue.
I don't understand the "compression" chart. What do the two different DB axis-es mean?
Great tutorial. Question: What order should I apply these changes in? I have somewhat noisy audio from a chap off of Skype. My tendency has been to compress it, apply noise reduction since the compression increases some of the noise, then EQ it slightly and normalize with the other voices. Is there a better order?
Dan... I love equalizing audio in Adobe Audition. I generally use the 10 band equalizer. With Adobe I can "preview" the audio and move the slide pots up and down on the ten different frequencies (while listening) to hear the change of sound. I can't seem to do this with Audacity. I'm finding the :05 to :07 second preview too fast and can't adjust the sound in real time as the track is playing. Is there a way to extend the playback time of the preview on Audacity (for the graphic equalizer) so to adjust the sound in real time while the audio is being played?
Wish you would do an update on the current version.
Best tutorial I have seen thus far thank you!
Thank You Dan.
Shouldn’t you do EQ after the compression?
Is it possible to take these effects and automatically put them into something? Like if I'm doing a livestream or a skype call with someone?
Veritex Studios LLC get a sound board (equalizer) to plug your mic into which then sends the mixed output to the mic jack on your laptop or device
Very very helpful. Thank you so much. I use Audacity but so much of it is a mystery
Andrew Cullum for me too 😂😂😂!!!
Thank you!
We LISTENED!
hello, thanks for ur tutorial, but i have 2 questions, can u answer them ASAP?
1) I have audacity 2.0.3 version and on there for equalization, i do not have option to drag the lower and higher frequency bars up like u r showing, so how do i do it? Can u provide details?
2) There is also option to add GVerb/Reverb settings to make recorded audio better.....so i should do both equalization/compression and then add Gverb? Should both be done or either/or? and which to do first?
Wonderful tutorial, thank you. One question though. I thought of Compression as lifting the quiet parts as well as lowering the loud parts. Is there a way to do both, rather than modifying only the too-loud parts?
Thank you so much!
Is it okay to just compress bits where the audio has a noticeable spike? Or is it necessary to compress the entire audio clip at once in order for it to not sound patchy?
Thanks for the vid! Could you please tell me why one would want to use the equalization to boost the treble and bass instead of just using the Boost Bass or Boost Treble effect? Also, could you do a video explaining all the MENU options for Audacity. There are some effects that I've used many times, but others I don't have a clue how they might even be used. Also, what's the difference between just the Fade Out effect and "Studio Fade Out"?
hello i tried to remove vocals in this app.but i cant to remove vocal.so pls tell me about remove vocals in a song and which software that you suggest to remove vocals in 100%.help me
Well I like this! It should be very helpful for my LP series- thanks!
I didn’t even see the equalization option what should I do
Awesome video man thanks for the help!
I was just wondering if anybody can tell me if you should compress the audio before equalization or after. Am I wrong in thinking that if you boost the frequency before compression, then you risk a greater chance of peaking out (I don't know if this is called clipping or not)? Then when you compress the audio, won't the peaks be squared? And if so, can't that give the audio a clicky, digital quality?
Excellent information, thanks!
That helped tremendously. Thanks
Super lesson thank you
Wow.. that helped out alot thanks man
this helped me out so much. thank you
should i equalize the vocals if its in a song
Thank you ..great lesson.
What kind of EQ would you use for vocals, for a song?
Thank you so much for a lesson I really learn a lot sir.
Thank you very much! It really helped me
thx Dan, but what version are you using in this video
In Audacity: File > Export (as a file type of your choice that Sony Vegas can read).
Yes, that'll be a lot helpful & awesome
Something is wrong with my Compression. It's increasing the noise levels as well as amplifying the whole track but I'm using the same input numbers as you.
can you apply this to a dj mix? and not just a voice ?
