  • In his new book, The Hidden History of American Healthcare (Berrett-Koehler), popular progressive radio host Thom Hartmann reveals how and why attempts to implement affordable universal healthcare in the United States have been thwarted and what we can do to finally make it a reality. For-profit health insurance is the largest con job ever perpetrated on the American people - one that has cost trillions of dollars and millions of lives since the 1940s. Other countries have shown us that affordable universal healthcare is not only possible but also effective and efficient. Taiwan's single-payer system saved the country a fortune as well as saving lives during the coronavirus pandemic, enabling the country to implement a nationwide coronavirus test-and-contact-trace program without shutting down the economy. This resulted in just 10 deaths, while more than 500,000 people have died in the United States. Hartmann offers a deep dive into the shameful history of American healthcare, showing how greed, racism, and oligarchic corruption led to the current "sickness for profit" system. Modern attempts to create versions of government healthcare have been hobbled at every turn, including Obamacare. There is a simple solution: Medicare for all. Hartmann outlines the extraordinary benefits this system would provide the American people and economy and the steps we need to take to make it a reality. It's time for America to join every industrialized country in the world and make health a right, not a privilege.

7:37 So basically when the series "Breaking Bad" would have been located in Denmark, or any other developed country by that matter, Walter White never would have been the drug king pin we all know (and love) him for, since he never had to start cooking math to pay for his cancer treatments and securing his family departure from life. So thx US of A for making this glorious series possible. With the best "health" "care" "system" and democracy that anyone can by for money, if you can afford it...

Lol, however, even with the outrageous, unforgivable high price tags of everything health, we do NOT have the best healthcare, or the best outcomes. The actual best healthcare is in the countries that we are trained to hate for no good reason except that they have resources that our sick oligarchy wants to control and profit from.

People need to understand that there is supposed to be a sliding scale on federal income tax. I was paying the same 25% yearly income tax on my business. Even though I made under 20 thousand the entire year. That's the same amount the multi millionaire corporations were paying and now they are paying even less then that. People need to wake up and understand the average American worker and small business owners are paying all the federal income tax in this country.

The top 1>10% pay 71% of all federal income taxes!
I paid 38% for several years! Now I live in Costa rica and pay nothing!

The top elites do not pay any taxes. They have loopholes that provide for this situation.some even get kickback of tax payer money into their pockets due to their money laundering lobby funds.many are democrat elites...not just RINO.
Current our health care system is. Corrupt.. especially with being controlled by elite Dem or others. Party affiliation has little influence when the individual is corrupt.

@@jeanalice4732 I’m not talking about the 1/10th of 1% that own more than the bottom 90%
If you earn more than $440K you’re in the 1%.
So the top earners pay more than 70% of all the federal income taxes! Aren’t you more concerned that over 70M Americans pay nothing? I’m a financial advisor that manages a lot of wealth.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree. To me we do need a range of middle classes. I hardly see that as being elites. But the can filter their holdings somehow.

Billionaires should not even exist. Yes, I said it. We must go back to near 100% tax on top wealth (not just wage earners’ no one gets that rich from wages they actually earned). Tax the hoarded wealth as it should be and watch America spring right back up to the top again!

    • @wheresholiday
      @wheresholiday 11 місяців тому

They shouldn't and science shows how that much wealth creates adverse personality outcomes for mankind. It's an unequal distribution of power and that changes neurology. You cannot become a billionaire without indirectly increasing crimes against humanity. The 401k is a rich man’s Ponzi scheme and lifesaving healthcare is only given to those that are physically capable of working. It’s such bullshit. I do hate it here in the USA. Our politicians are monsters. Except for Katie Porter, AOC, and the other trace few progressives like Bernie.

American politics of "we can't afford it" has destroyed public health through corporate tyranny. I have observed my own primary care clinic die since COVID. It was once a pillar of public health care. Political policies around COVID destroyed compassionate care delivery. Why did all of the inpatient hospices in California closed? Why is home health so incompetent at actual care of human lives? Insurance companies have dominated care delivery over working doctors and nurses. Now both have been silenced for authoritarian policies not of cost containment but for euthanasia.

People should know that the California State Legislature, controlled by Democrats, sank a single-payer initiative. Anthony Rendon accomplished this almost single-handedly, and can surely look forward to a lucrative career as a AMA or PHARMA lobbyist after he leaves "public service."

So.. you imply it was the Democrats, but then assert it was a single person. There are plenty of corrupt politicians, repub and dem, but the democratic party, by and large, represents progressive social evolution while the republicans have completely sunk into deeply corrupt fascist waters.

Here are two disappointments of this. Not a word about Modern Monetary Theory, which explains how our Fiat system really works. The comments are also disappointing. It shocks me to see how ignorant we still are about taxation. Tax money is not used to cover government spending, period. Tax money is destroyed, i.e. taken out of the system upon receipt. Government spending is not a bad thing, it is necessary and almost always it is good for our economy. Our government could give us a Universal single-payer health care coverage that covers all of our medical needs including vision, hearing, dental and mental care, and also long-term care with a few strokes on a computer keyboard, without raising our taxes or causing inflation. Do yourself a favor and learn the benefits of our fiat system, and for God's sake, stop listening to the oligarchal naysayers.

our health insurance also took a dive in quality when we started labeling selfish acts of addiction as a disease. they sucked money out of the insurance pool. its not a disease when you choose to party at the price of your families life. --its a selfish CHOICE.

Religious, lying, ignorant and stupidly dangerous conservative lawmakers. If there claims of belief in something larger than life are to be heard, then, why all of the constant lies and vitriol towards others. When we accept a belief system that is invisible and demands with endless punishment for sinning, what happens then, we get tired of ourselves to exhaustion. So since we can't just stop we take on the leaders own works rather than the kindness that It, espouses. R
