He was delusional long before he said that. He was claiming the Southerners were the Oligarchs in the Civil War, the North was financially destroying the South long before the Civil War. Their history of wage slavery was much more efficient than the South's overt slave system.

It's why "belief" is so dangerous, making sense of one thing doesn't mean we have to approve of everything. Everyone of us has and always have great ideas or thoughts and feelings that makes sense but not every word is gold - so we shouldn't accept their truth since we are not them, the same as you are not me, and that your husband, wife or partner are not you but we all sometimes agree on some things but not everything. This is because we think because we are, we have our own individual consciousness, figuring things out, living life the best way we can from the knowledge we gain and the learning process from our own individual experiences.
However we seem to lose the ability to discern other's thoughts and feelings where we may agree with them on some things but not everything. How should we define harmony with each other if we cannot find common ground with our neighbors, friends or family? How can we make our country great, if we use "belief" in our thinking processes instead of "figuring things out" instead by thinking the way we want instead of others spoon feeding us information which at times does seem wrong, since usually those who coerce a particular view usually is made because it has an agenda to push behind it. It's probably why we have an oligarchy now instead of a true democracy since we are so used to being spoon-fed information that it's hard for us individually to escape "belief" and to instead "discern" truth from lies, honesty from deception. So in order to understand harmony where we can all live together, rich with the poor, the white along with the black and brown and yellow and red, the old and the young, we must be able to develop understanding and have the capability and ability to discern, to know and not believe, where we can all live together. It's like listening to classical music, the sound one hears in these performance can only be harmonic if each of the musical instruments can work together. Those in power must understand that we need each other in order to keep our nation whole and in good form, but it does not come about if the American folk lies asleep and keeps "believing" lies which may in the end, may spell the doom for us all since the law of cause and effect is immutable where in some time in the future that swing of the pendulum will also hit us with terrible force. We see this already in climate change and in the terrible havoc we are facing with the corona virus pandemic. So we must wake up from belief, this way we are not lured into false promises where a lot of folks as well as the individual gets taken advantage of. And when we actually can think individually without coercion or belief, we can live a brighter tomorrow since by this time we can respect each other no matter our station in life, our color, world views, age, wealth or creed.

I used to listen to Thom Hartmann's radio show every day. I never missed the "Brunch with Bernie" segment every Friday at noon. I was absolutely amazed and appalled in 2016 when Thom refused to go all in for Bernie in his presidential campaign. Instead he proceeded to sound like a paid operative for Hillary Clinton. This shilling for Hillary was hypocrisy to me at the highest level. I haven't listened since. (I actually had to mute this interview while writing this...sorry Krystal and Saagar.) He used to have sound clips from FDR on his show, but when he had a chance to support an FDR-like candidate, he chose to sit on his microphone. I believe voices like his, along with Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, Bill Maher and others, could have made a difference in that campaign, and helped to encourage the Democratic party to nominate the person who would have beaten a vapid, reality show host. These people, who I thought to be true progressives, turned out to be establishment Democrats after all. Shame on me for being so duped; shame on them for the hypocrisy.

They took it over sometime around 1913-1914 - it is basically how they can control the economy.
Kennedy realized it gave the "banking cartel" to much power and took it back. This of course they were less than pleased by.

I appreciate Thom’s comments and insight, but I think some crucial history is missing here. The reason we had a more equitable society with high tax rates for the rich and robust social programs for a time was not just because FDR was a good guy or something. It’s because there was a huge worker movement in the US at that time and a historic amount of socialist and communist membership at the time. FDR knew that if he didn’t appease them it would be bad for him politically because those groups were very influential and UNIFIED around worker rights and ending the wealth gap. We know Nancy Pelosi doesn’t want money out of politics! She just got caught in that Tesla stock mess. Y’all reported on that. Thom made it sound as though this is more of a republican thing and I don’t understand why. Pelosi isn’t not going to put that bill on the floor unless she knows it won’t go anywhere. Neither would McConnel
If you want these policies to be legislated, outside pressure is mandatory not optional. We can’t keep electing people on good faith and moral fortitude. We have to build outside pressure through worker solidarity so we can have a say in things. The electoral system is too corrupted for us to take it on good faith that eventually someone who cares about us will do the right thing and reject every incentive along the way to do the opposite.

Just as oligarchy collapses into totalitarianism, democracy collapses into the tyranny of the majority, or mob rule. For either of these political systems to remain functional, we must embrace reasoned and dispassionate debate as our ONLY acceptable form of political communication.

An oligarch is a single individual that controls an entire sector of the economy. John D. Rockefeller was very close to being an oligarch by controlling 90% of the oil; 100% is an oligarch. In Russia during the time of the Soviet Union and presently there are oligarchs that control entire sectors of the economy.
In the US we have an oligopoly (monopoly of the few) with several corporations controlling entire sectors of the economy. Corporatism started in the 1990s with the government allowing corporations to acquisition (buy) entire sectors of the economy. The government controls the regulations that allow it and disallows competition against it, and the oligops pay the government back by basically paying for everything.
Reverse the economic policies of the 1990s and reverse the economic situation we're in. And then the new headache will be the number of choices we have in both higher paying jobs and consumer goods.

    we've always been an oligarchy.
    Our founders wanted an oligarchy.
We don't have a democracy. if only up to a quarter of the population chooses the winner of our elections, that's not a democracy.
Our constitutional republic is an oligarchy.

Believing that politicians will save the people is as stupid as believing the oligarchs will, only the people, united, organized and informed can end the nightmare and make the dreams of every human heart into reality.

It’s government industrial complex...the answer is supporting small business and not allowing government bail out large corporations. But that’s what the government has been doing with the public’s tax dollars.
