I always ask if I can have them if I see 1 or 2 issues that are older...@ doctor's & dentist's offices. My endodondist retired & they gave me the bulk of their Smithsonian & Nat'l Geographic mags! I also asked @ my former dermatologist's office, b/c they said they periodically got rid of them. Just ASK! : ) ALSO I have found that buying "bulk" deals on magazines on eBay works well. If you divide the total price of what they're offering (many, many mags in bulk) by the # of mags you're getting, oftentimes it's a really great deal!
Great tips! I would love to see a video about how you organize materials and clippings. Do you use folders, albums, or something else? How do you group things to enable creativity?
Love your videos! My library saves National Geographic's magazines for my friends and I, more than we can ever use in fact! The library sales of unwanted books are great too (we do book folding too) We can get a huge grocery bag full for $5. Now, I'll be looking at everything I've already collected. Look forward to viewing more of you ur work and videos!
Very Good point about the mold.I have had folks unknowingly give me paper before that has mold.It is a good idea to give your paper finds the stiff test.
Wow! This was super helpful. I've been wanting to do collage for a while, but have been struggling with having to buy expensive magazines all the time. You've given me some really good ideas! Thanks!!!
Great video! I've always been curious about how you sift through your source material , since I've been "once of those friends" who gives you magazines. Keep the videos coming! Collage!
Other places to find magazines are the Friends organization of your local library. They sometimes hold book sales to raise money for your local library. Also, libraries may have magazines for sale usually 10 to 20 cents
Yes! My city's library has these sales about every 3 months & will notify you by email if you sign up. Pennies on the dollar for magazines & old books! I love it! I'm in heaven when I'm there browsing whether it's a sale or not. B/c even if not a "sale" our Friends of the Library prices are low & very reasonable!
I want to collage, but the bookworm in me is going, "someone would read this, even though it hasn't been read in years." I would be a very picky collagist.
Can u please help me , or give metips about making a collage on soil conservation I don't find any magazines near my house and it's quarantine in my country please hellppp...
Put a large sign on your window, ask shops, advertise for free magazines. If you are on facebook try local selling group- people give away everything from furniture/ wood/ if not then use Schpok online selling group.
I go to our local thrift stores! St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, & privately owned thrift stores. One privately owned thrift store has Nat'l Geographic mags - OLD ONES! - for 10 cents a piece. Buy 10, get #11 free! Pretty awesome!
Well I have a storage cart that has 8 drawers and i lable them that's what I put my big cutouts in it is also on wheels which helps ... I put all my words and sentences in an old tackle box ... And for the really small cut outs I have one of those picture albums that have sticky pages in them with the clear film on top that you peel .. they call them magnetic albums .. best thing ever they stay in place and they are also protected by the sheet on top.... And all my background pages landscapes stuff like that. I keep in a three ring binder inside page protectors... That's how I do it .. hope that helps you you out
Thanks for your questions! This is actually a huge area of interest and research of mine in the grad program I'm in. I hope to make a video about this soon, I get many questions about copyright and collage. Intellectual Property is not a clear cut issue and since I'm not a lawyer I'm still working on the best way to present it to everyone. I'll be sure to reply to this thread with the link when I do. Thanks for commenting!
I personally would! RE: copyright - My collage artist friend, Jonathan Jerald of Los Angeles (Credentials furnished by me if u need them), told me: "The law does not require licensing for the use of images in works of art. Unlike for TV & film, artists are free to use images from any source in a work of art. Artists, after all, perform a unique function in society as critics of commerce & popular culture & reworking images from commercial & news media is essential to that." He says: "An artist DOES NOT have to worry regarding copyrights." P.S. He was/is referring to COLLAGE art.
That's just great! It totally makes sense now that you talk about it. Thank You! You have been far too helpful. I will keep that in mind next time I make a project.
I don't have experience participating in on the spot collage making competitions. I'd say the best way to prepare is practice leading up to the event. You could have family or friends help you set up a practice session with similar requirements to the competition. I hope that helps! Thanks for the comment!
if only we had Estate Sales in the UK. quite gutted that we dont. need to be car boot-sales or something because charity shops/thrift stores throw away anything that looks old or worn or tries to sell it for more on auction sites.
Some other great places to find magazines: laundromats, beauty salons, and doctor's offices.
This is so true! I actually was walking by a hair salon getting rid of their magazines a couple weeks ago. It was like winning the lottery...

High Jewelry and couture too, it's awesome
@@VideovigilanteUSA Of course, I assumed people would have enough common sense to ask before taking anything that’s not theirs!

Great questions! Too bad she never answered you...
Great intro! I've been wanting to try collage for a long time and will followup with your other videos. Thanks for posting these great tutorials.
Thanks so much for your kind words. If you have any questions or suggestions for upcoming video let me know!

+Karen Purke YES, and mold is so hard to get rid of! Sniff Test or checking for visible water damage works too. :)

@@liz3bet libraries changed my life. Spend hours and never get bored. Good thing I took advantage before the lockdown
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thank you so much!
Can I ask where you got that amazing mat you're using as your work surface?
What about the copyright on magazine pictures? Do you worry about using other peoples pictures?
It's definitely copyright infringement, that's why this series is rubbish
Still waiting for the real response for this

Curious about copyright? Can you take photos from a magazine and use them without crediting the photographer?

My library has free books and magazines. I always pick up a few each week.

would you recommend using enciclopedias for collage material?

oohhhhhh I feel is a sacrilege to cut BOOKS...!!! I don't know o I can do it..!!!
Some libraries sell old mags for 10 cents.
Show at least a few images of your materials like old magazines, books or clipping instead of yourself :)
