    I love the topaz. My loving husband gave me an suite of Yellow Topaz. 2 oval cut 1 ct. earrings in an open gallery, and the necklace is a line of stones going from large to small. But my love is the Ruby, which is my birthstone and Opal. I love opals and the black are my favorites. So finding your channel was a treat for me. And I am so thankful that you are safe. I am so sorry for the fires there. And all the folks affected.

    • @VintageTimeGems

      Hi Mary, Topaz is still my favourite. Quality ruby is virtually impossible to source for recreational gem cutters like myself. However, I keep my fingers crossed that maybe I can facet a real ruby of quality.

    Marvelous cutting, Cliff. Recutting the break & main facets was very clever indeed, and doing so saved a beautiful piece of flawless rough. I think the reveal is absolutely stunning. I also liked your explanation of dealing with cleavage planes. Thanks much for the informative and entertaining video.
    Stay safe, my friend.

    wow,i found it quite mesmerizing. some tiny facets looked like they are floating inside the middle of the gem. awesome. i also begin to understand your preference for Topas, it concentrates light in a particular way. i even learned something today. might sound easy on someone who cuts,but since all i have are cutting videos, i just today understood that the axis of the dobstick determens where the centerpoint of the facets is. so in an irreagular shape like this,you have to position the gem off center on the dobstick. that was quite revealing,for me. This chanel is in the Top3 of my favorit Chanels, right beside Alec Steele and Seska.

    • @VintageTimeGems

      Thanks Dirk. I would get a chart on all the gems refractive indexes. With gems like quartz, do not cut the pavilion below 41 degrees. I like 43 degrees.

    Well done Cliff that designe would look good in Brazilian aquamarine

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 років тому +1

      Aquamarine may have too low a refractive index for such a gem...A light blue topaz would look better I think. That's the good thing about Sapphire and Zircon's the have a high RI so you expect them to be worth more as they should. Low RI gems at high prices makes no sense as they have no brilliance. So you pay for rarity.

  • @SnowTiger45
    @SnowTiger45 4 роки тому +1

    It seems Faceting Cut Diagrams are like House Plans. They look great on paper, but can they be built that way ? Often the answer is no.
    Many house plans are designed by people who have never swung a hammer. They have no idea of the Services that need to be included and therefore don't account for them.
    I wonder why those who design facet diagrams wouldn't think to test out their own designs before releasing them ?
    BTW Cliff, the inclusion of the video inset "damn the facets" (paraphrased) takes an older person such as ourselves to appreciate its origin (Great Movie Series).

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 років тому +1

      Thanks. Yes it's often difficult to see poor meet points by eye. With a quality 10X jewelers loupe it becomes quite obvious. With most Asian gem faceted you will see clearly without any magnification how bad the meet points are.
