And that's saying something 'cause Dave had great musical taste. I've seen Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Tod Snider, Joe Ely and a bunch of other great singer/songwriters on Letterman.

Ray Wiley Hubbard for me is like JJ Cale is to many. Ray’s songs are clever stories that make you laugh, create a mood, paint strange and familiar pictures, and just think. I love this man. A good friend of mine Matt King wrote a song with him called Hell In the Henhouse. Ray’s songwriting has certainly been an influence on Matt and that is a good thing. Check out Matt’s stuff, particularly Apples and Orphans and Rube, some of the best music you’ll ever hear, but it’s not mainstream, which is good in some ways and bad in others. Good because sometimes when artists go mainstream they are forced by the people financing the music to write something that’s forced to fit the market place and then you wouldn’t have the great music that comes from guys like Ray and Matt, they refuse to cowtow to that way of selling out. It’s also bad because so many will miss out on hearing their stuff, because it’s not readily available. Do yourself a favor, FIND their music and support these fantastic musicians, you’ll be glad you did.

His relationship with Stevie Ray was a highlight of our conversation and Ray's love for him was evident. I don't think I've ever had a greater experience outside the birth of my children and my marriage. A true gentlemen and an unheralded artist.
