      You just tell the people, excuse me, this is my stop. Cuz you're not going to be the only one getting out in the entire train, people need to get out to let others out and then the struggle to get back in with more passengers at the next station starts up again.

      There would be no way for them to get their phone out to drop it. If it's in their shirt pocket, hopefully their phone won't be crushed while suffering a couple cracked ribs. :/

      @loryen3215 9 років тому +4

      Just Your Shadow well in London they get packed trains too, early in the morning, and they will compress themselves hard xD but not to this point...since there is a train passing by every 2-5 min (unless you are gonna do some long trip in that case the train might take 20-40 min)

    • @acmenipponair
      @acmenipponair 9 років тому +1

      Tryndamix Loryen the trains are also going every some minutes on that line. The problem is mostly, that at any interchange between two lines (and Toyoko is a major interchange in the northern part of Yokohama towards Tokyo) every some minutes are coming to your trains...

    • @acmenipponair
      @acmenipponair 9 років тому +1

      And the next problem: They are at the optimum of space... if they make the trains bigger, they will become slower, so the timetable would be needed to be expanded, if they make the time table even more dense, they would need smaller distances between the signals = smaller trains = also less capacity.

      Most “salarymen” and “salarywomen” have a 1 hour commute from their homes so walking isn’t that good of an option. Cycling might also be an option, but it isn’t rare for me to see people who cycle for 20 minutes to the train station and take the 1 hour commute. If your workplace is like 2-3 stations away from your house, I think anyone would rather walk or cycle than being stuffed like this.

    Once on a trip to Universal Studios, I was standing in a ticket line. There was this Japanese guy behind me, and he kept pushing up against me. I would move ahead, and he would be there again right behind me. Then I realized: that's just what the Japanese do. They are so used to being in crowded spaces and being squished-up against other people (like in this video) that it's considered "normal". They don't realize that Americans have a "safe distance" that they keep when getting close to others in a crowd.

      Sarah, Universal studios is in America. The entire sentence is based around a comparison between the Japanese train culture and ours. Obviously other people have personal space lol. It's so weird how people like you say things like that. It's like you are anti social in text form.

      She's right, not just Americans, it's nothing to do with being "American" actually but it's a human instinctive thing rather, anyone with a bit of dignity has a "safe distance" and doesn't like being treated like an animal or a herd of sheep! You really do lose some of your humanity when you are so inhumanely pushed into the metro everyday in Japan or elsewhere that you end up finding it normal and no longer see the wrong in it, people are so blinded by the system that they just don't realise that it's not the way it should be, it's sad

    I stayed in Tokyo for two years and this is what i went through on a daily basis. I was so used to it so i didn't think much of it. Now that i re-look at it, IT IS SO HILARIOUS. But well, that's Japan's train culture. And i really respect the Japanese for being so patient and tolerant. In my country, just the slightest body contact in the train makes us feel really uncomfortable and strange.

    • @satsumaangel5222
      @satsumaangel5222 9 років тому +16

      it is not hard. The people at the front come out, stand at the side, and let the others exist, then they will be the ones to get in first, move way to the middle allowing others to get on. People are calm and don't push.
      Trains run every two minutes, so there is no way they can increase the train services.

    • @aidanjt
      @aidanjt 9 років тому +11

      They have dudes literally cramming people in, a great deal of pushing is indeed involved, and if people are wasting their time getting out then that means the trains are spending far too much time standing still. That's hardly functional service. And if they have trains running every 2 minutes, then they need bigger trains.

      aidanjt In 2010, Toyoko-line (shown in the video) trains were extended from 8 cars max to 10 cars max per train (a huge operation, because it required extending the platforms at all stations, in a very crowded urban environment).
      The same year, a new station was added at Musashi-kosugi for the Yokosuka/Shonan-Shinjuku lines, which takes some pressure off the Toyoko line.

That being said trains are still overcrowded during rush hours and women have women-only cars because of all the s*xual harassment going on in the cars.

    After living in Japan, get used to it pretty quick. Looks inefficient but total opposite, trains come every couple of minutes at peak hour and end up at their destinations ON TIME 99% of the time. Big reason for the "Pushers" is that people are polite and don't want to invade other passengers space unless have too (which the do), if got a shot through the window at the middle, would have seen space for 2 or 3 people at least. Also the positive of living in such a crowded place generally is that most things are close. Vast majority of people are polite and follow unspoken rules and service is excellent. Missed family and friends when was there but great place to live. Excellent health care, food was good too.
