I've bought 4 hardware synths and 5 iOS synths over the past couple of months(Reface CS, Roland GAIA, OB-6, ROLI Seaboard Block, already had a MiniNova--and one thing I'm realizing is that they all sound very similar to a certain extent(with the exception of my OB-6--it is exceptionally exceptional), but how you get to the similar sounds, i.e - the panel interfaces and the looks of course--is the real of the fun and what differentiates them from one another. That and a room full of synths is just freakin' cool.🤷🏽♂️
No. There is no USB connection in the Roland. (the micro USB socket is just for power, not MIDI.) I need to know if any of the i-connectivity or i-rig setups have an interface with MIDI cables at one end, and USB socket on the other. I don't mean a plug...i mean a SOCKET where I can plug my USB keyboard IN.
Nope...you cannot play it with a controller keybd that does not have 5-pin midi outlets. there has to be an interface and I have been searching all over for the information. I'm not talking about connecting it to a computer either.
That's wrong. Like all the other synthesizer in the Boutique range, the USB port is not "just for power", but also for MIDI and audio. Did you even watch the video? Peter uses a MIDI controller in the video and explains the inputs/outputs of the SH-01a. www.roland.com/global/products/sh-01a/specifications/ Anyway, to use an "USB keyboard" you'll need something like the Miditech USB MIDI Host ( miditech.de/en-298-produkte-usbmidihost ). Though it's probably cheaper just to get a "normal" MIDI controller. Like this you'll have the USB port of the SH-01a, free to power it.
I did watch the video. So, it can communicate with a laptop via the USB cable. However, you cannot get a device that will let you play it with, say, an AKAI Mini, which does not have DIN sockets.
does the SH01 show up inside a DAW when connected via USB... to make midi notes.. great little synth there especially for lovers of the original monster 101 !!
C H R I S S X D hi there thanks for reply, i suppose i need to get back in to my jp 08.i demoed a red sh01 it sounded beaut, and then i went on the korg minilogue and i'm back to not knowing which to go for. The minilogue sounded great and more versatile. Any opinions?
It's all about taste or flavour. And it's 2017 right now, so everything has moved along. I only wish that Roland will come out with something mind-blowing. It seems, that there focus, is on making little tiny synths because they are cheaper to build and to cheaper to sell. People get bored with them really quick, you can tell, if you look at the second hand market. Create something big in size and sound please, Roland!
While the korg volcas are ok, where would synthesis be today without the Roland 808, Juno 6, 60, 106, Jupiters, JP's, etc? No, if you ask me, Roland beats down Korg any day.

'Exceptionally Exceptional' is a perfect description of the OB-6 (and the monstrous old Oberheim poly synths that its based on/a tribute to)!
Subtractive synthesis might be the common denominator. Go with an FM synth, west coast synthesis, wavetable, etc... to get different types of sounds
Great review, thanks!
Buy it. I have analogue and digital and it hits the sweet spot!
This synthesizer can not make a bad sound.. 😎
Dwayne Anthony Gaither Like most Roland gear
@@dxtrs_mnpltr I meant bad as in good
Is he playing Radiohead - Every Thing in it's Right Place 9:15 at the end of the vid?
indeed sir
and pyramid song
HighMonkeyMonk Pyramid Song is amazing.
Haut Strange are you a radiohead fan by chance?
Bomb-ass review. Tx, man.
That's pretty sweet.
Did he mention anything about whether it's velocity sensitive and/or supports aftertouch?
It has velocity, no after touch I don’t think
I missed something...how do you input notes? Can you connect to a regular MIDI controller? How about a cheap little USB MIDI controller?
As far as I know, you can control the whole synth via MIDI and even via a USB-MIDI controller =)

Can I program the sequencer with my USB midi keyboard?
Would like to know this as well! Did you ever find out?
all the sounds you play coming from factory presets ?

no just via midi
yes it has midi and sound over usb
Like all the boutiques, you can send and receive both audio and MIDI over USB.
Good demo sir
Im thinking of selling my jp08 and buying this is it a right move to make ??
Daz Dee No!!! JP's are gems! Get this as an addition to your 08!

You should only ever buy synths, never ever sell them.
will this work with another keyboard like a Korg MOX6 ?
Buzz of course?
nice one ...
Nice!
Will it work on a Mac tho?
Of course. All Roland products support Mac.
Can these be polychained to get 8 voices??
James Reeno sure..
James Reeno ii
The blue one please... 😃
Yeah, I wanted the blue one, but could only find gray and red. Red looks cool too though!
I do like Roland but I'm more of a Korg fan when it comes to analogue synths

SynthPimp these sell like hotcakes.
I'd rather keep my SH-7 & 5. Modern synths has no depth in its sound.

C H R I S S X D, correct.
every time I see a video I go yes! then I see how tiny it is and no keys I think "Sell my shitty volkas"
Cool
i dont know why roland make it small
Portability
No improvement of HPF! SHAME ROLAND!
