I had a SH101 in the ‘80s and thought it was wonderful, so as I no longer have that I have now got one of these. It is a nice machine😊 and I particularly like the easy to use polyphonic sequencer. Thanks for the run through of features many of which I’d not yet found.
This was the best overview and tutorial of this synth, thank you so much!!! Wonderful explanations, also love that you went over the menu controls in a quick and straightforward way!
Thanks for making these walkthrough's - very helpful. It must be quite a bit of work making a good tutorial (I should know, I've made a lot of bad ones).
First of thanks for your video reviews on boutique products...very very helpful I just purchased the sh01q love this unit my decision to purchase it was based on Roland Canada review....I was just wondering if you could please please do a video on using the sequencer been trying to master the rest notes and trying to make what I recorded playback the same as I entered the notes in thanks again.
Thanks you for the profound review! Do you think it's possible when connected to the DAW to program automatisation of different functions of the SH 01A
I’ve just got one of these. I bought a keystep instead of the K25. How do I get it going? I’ve got MIDI out of keystep to MIDI in on Sh01a, but when I play the keys there’s nothing happening. The sh01a sequence plays and is audible when I click play, so it’s not an audio routing issue. It’s just something to do with the midi I expect. I’m pretty new to hardware so if you can tell me what I need to do that’ll be wicked. Cheers
@@Nu-trix no worries. I think I’ve figured it out. I was just being dumb. I have a JU06a with K25 already, but, as the Sh01a has 64 step sequencer I’m considering using the k25 for that and using the Keystep for the JU06a to get around the limitations of the 16 step sequencer. I come back to numerous of your videos over and over. You’ve been an ideal source throughout my newbie phase. Cheers man. ;)
Great video Nu-Trix. I have a question tho, my SH-01a's step sequencer skips a step why i input notes to it. For example when i start on 1, i press a note, then the next step is 3? it skips step number 2. Is this a system error or is there should i could do to change it in the settings? Thank you!
When I connect a patch cable to EXT clk in it's supposed to play a single note each time it gets a clock signal but it starts the whole sequence on mine... any tips?
The different colors do NOT sound different from each other. They all sound the same. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
In a way all analogue gear is different. They all are slightly different. The old synthesizers from the 70's and 80's have enough differences between them to feel like they are not the same. So, the red, grey and blue are different enough but exactly like the grey is different from another grey. It might explain the myth around the "sound of the colors".
Hi, I first need to say I really appreciate your roland videos . Clear explanations, step by step process ... it gave me some light when I was lost in the shadows of the unexplored machine's territory. Thanks for that = ) still, I have a question about the "load" phase (my english is far from being perfect... I l do my best to be as clear as possible !) : how to "delete" last steps of my pattern without "allowing rests" , In aother words I mean how to reduce he number of steps of my pattern. For example turning a 79 steps pattern to a 64 one ... ???? Thanks for your answer - Peace
@@Nu-trix no problem, do you still have this synth? what do you think after some time? i wanted small analog in similar price range but damn this thing sounds good
As an external sequencer I’ve had some problems. 1) Midi out misses repeated notes without an extra step put in. It is fine if the note is different. Only quirky on a repeated same note. It does this in mono or poly mode. (the sequence is perfect on the SH01a if just hearing just the internal sound of the SH) The external synth I’m trying to sequence is a 1983 Roland JP-6. The problem is the same if I program the SH01a sequencer from its K25m keyboard or from the JP6.

The poly option makes it sound great
Brilliant once over. Thank you
Cheers, man. Just got one and your video was massively helpful!

Man, great reviews! Without bullshit, pure essence!
Toujours un excellent prof!

thanks for your videos helping me learn about my new sh01
You are welcome

Thanks for the good words Tim. I'll try to prepare a short video about the sequencer next weekend. Cheers!
Hi Tim, I have just finished a short video about the SH-01a sequencer in response to your question : ua-cam.com/video/8ldfkivlmlA/v-deo.html
Stil very useful in 2020 thanks a lot !
thank you very much
Thank you for doing this!
very nice friendly demo :) In manual mode does the synth default to mono or is it still possible to choose poly? Thanks a lot
Good question. I have to test it to confirm. In manual mode the sh-01a can be change between mode mono /poly .
Any chance of a SH01a vs MS 101 in the near future? Thanks
I do not have access to a MS 101. Maybe one day.
hey que genio gracias yo. tengo el azul love this Synth
Thanks you for the profound review! Do you think it's possible when connected to the DAW to program automatisation of different functions of the SH 01A
I think the knobs can send and receive MIDI messages… so yes it could be controlled by a DAW using MIDI.
does it have patch memory and 4 note poly?
Yes and yes :-)
Nice demo! I wonder how this sounds with a Novation Mono Station ... all those synced Sequencers!
Is the Output from the SH-01A Mono or Stereo???
Hi! Does this guy recieve program change so that i can save a patch and recall it with ableton?

You should check that both the Keystep and SH are using the same MIDI channel.

Is this digital or analog. Sounds good either way
It’s virtual analog: a digital computer simulation of the analog circuit.
any idea if the USB cable would also charge rechargeable batteries if you left them in there?
No made for that.

It is not supposed to react this way. Are you entering the notes using the Roland k-25m or an external MIDI controller?
what do you thing for deep house pads sound in this unit ? thanks

Idk man......my Red SH-01A sounds better hahahaha
Freddy Rey Lmao Red kr3w!
When programming notes to the sequencer, to input 4 note poly on each step, do you have to hold any 2nd key..?
Thank you.......U R a great!!!!!
Very well explained. Thanks
At 10.46 did anyone else think: “boards of Canada - June 9th!!!” ?

This or a BS2? :)
I would go with the BassStation2. It’s a more complex synth with the added feature of the AFX mode.
5 semitones up is not 5th, but 4th
7 semitones up is not 7th but 5th
I know it sounds like nitpicking but its really confusing for beginers.
You are right. Sorry about that my head was in the next thing to explain.
@@Nu-trix no problem, do you still have this synth? what do you think after some time? i wanted small analog in similar price range but damn this thing sounds good

When you say extra step, if you mean a tied note then it is played a one single longer note.
