- In this video Dr. Salvatore Vinciguerra travels to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Florida. This is one of Florida's oldest gardens and attractions located in Central Florida near Tampa and Orlando. The location of the gardens is one of the highest points on the Florida peninsula which is approximately 295 feet.
The 250 acre botanical gardens has a 60-bell carillon that plays music throughout the day. Dr. Salvatore Vinciguerra shares with you how the carillon works using a clavier which is a type of keyboard musical instrument. The tower, gardens and El Retiro a mediterranean style house adjacent to the property are on the National Register of Historic places.
Dr. Vinciguerra shares the biography of the founder of the gardens, Edward W. Bok and the history behind the construction of the gardens and tower. Famed architect Frederick Law Olmstead Jr. designed the gardens and transformed the sandy area into one of the nations beautiful gardens. The Gothic Revival singing tower was designed by Milton B. Medary and was built out of coquina stone from St. Augustine, and pink Etowah marble & gray Creole marble from Georgia.
If you have the opportunity to visit the gardens in person take your time to examine the layout of the gardens and tower. The tower is beautifully adorned with artwork depicting many of the animals and plants that are native to Florida.
Don't forget to checkout the other gardens that are adjacent to the tower as they can help visitors appreciate the original environmental conservation intentions of Edward Bok. There is a children's garden that has young visitors explore nature and sound. There is also a water garden for children where they can get wet and have fun. Entertainment is presented at various time of the year as there is a stage ready for an audience at all times.
Bok Tower Gardens is very family friendly and is an attraction that you can spend most of the day exploring the gardens. Lookout for special events and tours of El Retiro listen on the website listed below.

Hello Jackie! This was my first time visiting the tower and gardens. It's stuck in the middle of Florida almost in the middle of nowhere.
