I think this might help me a lot, I tend to shoot from far distance, set up a shot and ankle pick, once I have his ankle I find myself in this position and tend to get discouraged So need to practice this out!

Just a quick question... For this to work as a pin would you be able to flip the opponent over on his back from that position or would be a potentially dangerous?

Yes you can capture his elbow if he is grabbing your waist and throw him to his back and from the knees it would not be potentially dangerous.

How do you prevent/defend/counter the head in the hole?

Get the ankle for a funk roll before the head comes up and he sits on his ankles. Alternatively, focus your pressure on the head to keep him from diving in the hole.
