      Good old Reaper....too.
Thanks for sharing knowledge. You have a lot of equipment
and perhaps it gets tricky when deciding & investigating whether or not
you are actually allowed to use other branded euipment that creates sounds for yet other brands of gear.....? (hmm)

Entertaining as always man. I can see just how much you like your work. To be honest, I prefer to consume your output (that sounds wrong) and would not enjoy the pressure of needing to produce the goods. But you continue to get it right, so keep it up.

Though I've not made a fulltime career from just sound design (yet), I have done some work for VST synth developers. I've created created presets, created samples, did a few pieces of demo music, alpha testing, beta testing, etc. In the early days of Camel Audio, I was their main tech support guy. I also wrote a piece of utility software (MorphMaker) to supplement their "Cameleon 5000" additive synth. Sound Design is something I'd love to make a fulltime living from. So for me, I thought your video was awesome! 🙂

Being a sound designer has changed my life. Glad to see people open up about their own process to inspire others to learn to explore and advance the community/culture for all of us to travel sonic landscape together. So much sound can bring new life and expression into environments and circumstances that never had its own voice before. Definitely an underrated part of being a producer/musician.

You know... I never really considered just how freeing this job could be for some. If you're forced to put together entire arrangements, yeah, the job can get a little annoying as it's quite some commitment to something that doesn't necessarily always excite you. Then there's the sometimes stressful aspect of making an AMAZING sound and just not doing it justice with your track, this job can kinda alleviate both those things. Besides, even if the contract says you yourself would have to buy it, you don't REALLY need to choose between using it yourself or selling it. Especially no big deal if it's the kinda sample you've set up to be further adjusted from there in actual projects, if you're afraid to sell your own sound too much.

The one thing that's important, a huge part of sound design is asset management. Depending on your area of expertise, you might spend hours upon hours entering metadata, setting loop points, batch converting files, performing quality control and compatibility tests etc. It definitely has to be something you love!

I build some of my own Kontakt instruments and trimming up the sample and editing loop points always takes so long and the tools often just aren't the best for seeing what you're doing. Sample Robot sounds like it's built specifically just for this task.

Would love to see a video about how you manage to pull that off as I'm always just so busy writing music, working on sound design gigs for new products (under tons of NDAs), and running my two s corps and all the crazy admin stuff that follows (both music businesses one is publishing / production music / metadata). I have tons of ideas for helpful informative videos written down but I never have time to work on them and as you know a high quality video for UA-cam can sometimes take 1-2 working days if not more. Would love to get some insight into how you manage to make time for your youtube channel considering how busy you are with sound design work. cheers

The East Beast and West Pest are ridiculously good.
    I kinda want another pair.
If they put out a version without the keys/sequencer I'd probably buy enough of them to make some kind of decorative wall feature.

    Great video.
Getting paid to do sound design? You're living my dream!
That said, I know all too well that that being a professional means being paid to do what you love to do & what you're good at doing at a time you don't necessarily want to do it. And I'm not sure if I could handle the stress of uncertainty about where my next billable is coming from.*
Accordingly, I'll continue to live vicariously through you & just keep plonking away as a hobby for my own enjoyment/satisfaction.
Thx for being awesome & keep on keeping on :)
    * Actually I know I couldn't. I did the gig paycheck thing in a former life & the experience strongly suggests that my physical & mental health would suffer.

those sounds at 7:45 remind me of one of the best sounds on the Westworld soundtrack

Didn't understand a thing. But thanks for explaining it. Hopefully, (as I learn more about sound design) I will be able to use the knowledge you have provided.

Great video. Me thinks the job could be accomplished with the Brute or the Iridium alone - they are so versatile.

That sort of tips just work in most of creative businesses :) many do forget that aspect to begin with and you do not get rich just by waiting

It's exciting to see you using Reaper. I also use it for audio processing (not for MIDI programming 😀), and I totally agree that it's pretty powerful when it comes to automation. Everything is virtually automatable with ReaScript, and this is really a powerful tool for a software engineer like me.

Great video, there have been similar from people like Christian Henson, but not on the sound creation element of the industry so much. I have soooooo many questions, being a project manager myself I wonder how long was the project from agreeing the brief to delivery and how do you monitor your progress and lastly do you work on just that project from beginning to end or, like so many people, do you have to juggle 15 different projects. Thank you for sharing.

Super interesting - and how do you come up with such good sound names, that can be the hardest part!

Another useful application for audio editing and all the batch processing required for sound design projects is Twisted Wave. Much less intimidating (and cheaper) than Wavelab.

Firstly, I'd like to apologize for ruining the 666 on your video likes [number 667 here lol]. I've been doing lessons and recording as my main income for quite some time, and been wanting to take on additional music-related work / side hustle. I had a vague idea of where to begin but this honestly so helpful 👏 Thank you! P.S. LOVE your War Dance and Mad God presets ✨
