You, Jorb, and Benn have just the right balance of music information and life lessons. I don't feel I watch you simply to learn about the new plugin or equipment, or cool techniques. I feel that I learn about the importance of people, community, and living life better. There is something great about this community. Thank you! And on the day that Patagonia made their amazing announcement, it makes sense that we do things for more than selfish reasons. 🌎

~ A Synthesis of The Thin Film of Hyperspecialism In The Face of An Age of Decline ~
Cameron, you, like most, are spreading or have spread yourself so thin over a niche, it is like a thin film of peanut butter over a slice of bread. It tastes Kind Of peanut buttery, or maybe it's just our imagination, but only enough for the company to list peanut butter as an ingredient. With the rest as as much cheap 'filler' as possible.
We and/or our jobs/work are as thin films of peanut butter, say, in your case, maybe spread over your nice home studio's walls, ceiling, floor and brand-name equipment. And we here in Commentariat-Land lick at it/them. Maybe even you do, given the thinness of your spread.
(Why the woods? Just for a sample? Then we go back into our 'studios', close the drapes and make sure there is enough padding on the walls in our cells? If we ever go out, is it with our mugs in the glow of our digital-detachment devices and headphones?)
And so we go out into the woods-- or at least what we perceive of as their abstraction (i.e., not likely the untouched old-growth things)-- for a what? Korg commercial? Like those car commercials with no bumper-to-bumper traffic, no exhaust fumes, no noise, no road-rage and no roadkill, etc.. Chiptunes on a dying planet in uncommunities. Truman Shows.
If we have all kinds of nature on our machines' screens, who needs nature anymore? If but for a mere reminder of how it once was before we turned our backs. A thin film of touchscreen. Unfa's jellyfish.

Now Gig Performer is hosting me on their live stream to tell my story, which is kind of blowing my mind. And Omri Cohen just told me he would drop in! ua-cam.com/video/Hp6NeI70hYY/v-deo.html

I'm 67, and I worked in factories for 45 years, dreaming and saving every dime so that I could one day have my own art/music/film studio. I was raised back at a time when "You need to get a REAL job" was the mantra I heard over and over, and so that is what I did. I put myself through college by going to night classes when I was working and am so grateful I am NOW retired and just get to play and create every day. I'm enjoying learning all about sound design & plugins on your channel. Thanks for posting these videos. Thanks for not letting the bastards who leave horrendous comments get you down. Over the years I've watched so many UA-camrs burn out or go insane trying to satisfy the algorithm gods. I think you are wise enough not to take that path. Again - Thank You. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

My mental health has never been better. Happiness is being retired and a home studio. This reminds me, it's time to get out my lightbox for the morning darkness here in the UK. Works wonders in combination with reducing the blue from my monitor at 6pm.

Yep, healthy sleep is so important for mental health. I got a lot more resilient when I mandated 7 hours of shut-eye and I usually wake naturally and doze for a few minutes before my alarm goes off - no more post-alarm aftershock and most mornings I feel like the cleaners came in and wiped down my mind. I'm looking forward to retirement - four more years!

Just before watching this video, I was lucky to find myself able to spend almost three hours in a row just messing with stuff in my DAW. And it was totally worth the pain I’m feeling in my neck and shoulders now as it, well, made me happy. It sort of freed my head from most of the stuff related to my regular work … and of some worries related to dear folks. - Your video, the question and all those replies from all those people had to cross my path today, obviously, because if not doing it for others, making music for myself, messing with the musical stuff for myself and discovering lots of new things, concepts, ideas etc. just frees my mind. And like most of the nice folks in your video, it makes me smile … just like it made them smile at the time. - So, long story short, I guess I do what I do to make myself and at least one more person smile.

Music has always been the most important thing to me in everything, especially in videogames. I've always wanted to be able to create magic through music like other composers do it, and when I finally do it, it's an incredible feeling!!! I'm not here to reinvent the wheel or anything, but being able to make something that feels as good as music I've always loved is the biggest thing to me.

I love listening to music because it takes you to another world or another place. For the duration of that piece, you are in that world. Music is therefore a key to that world. But when you *make* music, you now become a key-master and thus have the ability to create access to another world, which you will give to someone else for them to enter.

Making music has been in my blood since I was knee high. I've been DJing for over 20 years, and recently built a studio so I could get back in to making music again. I think the main reason I get enjoyment out of it is because I've never expected anything from it. I don't expect it to become a source of income, I don't expect to sign up to a label, so there's no pressure or stress to be continuously making music. I probably won't be trying to push boundaries. I do it because I love it. If others get enjoyment from my work, then that's just a bonus.

Hello. I have only recently joined your channel, but you have indeed inspired me to go out there and create something. Whether it is awesome is a wholly subjective matter which I cannot answer. I am in my late fifties and have played guitar and piano since my teens. I am not 'techie', but after meeting my now wife, a software engineer, ten years ago I acquired a MacBook with Garageband and also a midi keyboard. Until I watched your programme I had only used these tools to record my instruments with a mic and play some other instrument sounds on the midi. Since watching your programme, however, I have now ventured into the synthesiser settings on Garageband and the loops and so on. I have had mixed results so far but I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. I have written songs in the past, but now I a trying out more experimental sound mixtures. Thank you so much for this b delightful show. I also very much enjoy the videos where you sit at the keyboard and go through various modes and scales. I have just enough theory to get some really useful ideas from watching these. Best regards, Bob McGowan.

Awesome content man, really enjoyed the interviews ya did a good job with it.
There are 2 reasons for me making music, & the first is being able to make someone feel a specific way with nothing besides sound. It doesn’t always work out, but sometimes it does. My second reason, and this is gonna sound grim, but I feel like a catalog of personal & all original music is one of the best things someone can leave behind after we’re gone. Assuming someone will miss me, all they’ll have to do is load up some of my songs off internet & suddenly they’re swimming inside my mind & headspace that I was in when the song was made. That just seems more valuable to me personally than traditional heirlooms. I guess there is a third reason too & it’s just because it’s never not fun to make music. 😁

I thought that I have an understanding of the world, the message that comes with it and a simple enough way to explain it, that could change the world for the better, if I got enough people to listen to it. I knew that nobody listens to politicians or reads books, but everybody listened to Michael Jackson and 2Pac, so of course the solution was to reach people through art. I learned that the music industry is an industry, I learned that music is just music and that I am not the person that will be able to significantly change the world for the better (many reasons) - that's how it is. So my reason for getting into this died a pretty ugly death. I'm kind of staying with it, because it's the only thing I know, but my heart isn't really in it anymore, because I figured out that what I tried to achieve, can't be achieved - not by myself. My heart not really being in it anymore changed EVERYTHING. That may sound very negative, but what I'm trying to say is: the question you're asking is of outmost importance and everyone should ask themselves this question and answer it honestly.

It’s pretty clear that none of this is worth doing if not for the love of art and music. Trying to build a career or even supplemental income from my creative skills has always been in the corner of my mind but the moment I begin to take it too seriously it also loses it’s magic. At my age I’m no longer willing to be the tortured perfectionist I once was, looking for the perfect opportunity to join a band, or a rush of inspiration to write a bunch of songs. I’m just going to make music on my own time, on my own terms when I feel like it’s going to feel good to do so.

I enjoy making some of the same sounds that pioneering musicians of the past made, from Dahlia Derbyshire and Jean-Jacques Perrey to ELP, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, the Cars, Italo Disco, New Wave, New Romantics, and so on. Before I could only listen to the sounds and admire from afar. But with current technology I can make similar sounds and feel like being part of something bigger than myself.

Funny timing on on this topic - today I turned in my resignation after deciding to get out of nursing.
I started in the mid-90s as a genuine desire to help those who are sick, or hurting, and to try to make some difference in the world. The last 10+ years it's gradually felt like less nursing and more concierge, and service recovery, and the patient is never wrong (even when they are). The pandemic certainly helped put the nail in the coffin - it ruined my mental health for a long time, although I did (and do) seek help and am much better now.
So I guess when you don't know why you do what you do any more, change is a good thing.
Follow your passions, and make them your vocation. That is a life well-lived.

“You have to follow your dream! You have to do what you love!”
Mmm no you don’t. You can absolutely just work ‘a job’ for money and to live, and then spend your time off and that money on ‘what you love’ I think we push this idea that you have to do what you love for a living waaaaay too much, and it’s just complete bs that’s steering people wrong. Be honest.
Also, best explanation I ever got on the topic of the vid was from a musician who was working at a music store: “we are selling, repairing, and renting dreams. And that’s important.”
Damn right it’s important. What are we without dreams?

I do what I do because it makes me happy, would I like to maybe make a career out of it? Sure, who wouldn't? But it's how I cope with mental health issues, and maybe I can get a few people that likes a song I wrote too...

I do what I do because no one else is doing it. I do what I do because you, and I, and everyone else are living in someone else's unrealized version of the future, and owe it to them to at least try and realize it for them, in ways they could never have dreamed of. I do what I do because in the future, I want someone to look back at what I did, and know that at least one guy back then "got it", and tried. I do what I do because there's too much dancing and not enough thinking. I do what I do because Maxim Gorky was bored one summer night 115 years ago, and felt the same awe looking at Luna Park that I felt sitting on my dad's shoulders, peering through the store window of Video Concepts at Fox Valley Mall in the winter of 1979.
I do what I do because our buffer is too small as a species. We forget the meaningful, the important, the vital, forever clouded by our unending preoccupation with the trivial.
    ua-cam.com/video/yhy0oelnxE4/v-deo.html
I do what I do because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't respond to that calling in some way.

I do it for the infinite creative combinations available with sound and worlds you create with them, | fascinated in the exchange of idea and reality that is available when you experiment and then create a finished track. I also like the Synesthesia anomaly that imparts the ideas if you let them in. I'd love someone to show me art the create when they listen to my tracks for example. For me music it's all about communication and companionship.
