  • MULTIFOCAL GLASSES BUYING GUIDE: eyeglass options when you need a bifocal or progressive or readers. Great tips on glasses optons when you have presbyopia or are starting to loose your ability to focus up close.
Don't forget to watch our other videos in our presbypoia playlist.
In this video I summarize the options in eye glasses you have when you have presbyopia or when you need multifocals. It is a great buying guide to get you started on what to look for.
Hey everyone so you have been to your eye doctor and they have diagnosed you with Presbyopia..or the loss of your focusing ability. So what are the options you have to help you see better. Today we are talking about what options you have in glasses to manage your presbyopia. Good optometry morning!
So I am assuming you have a basic understanding of presbyopia, but if you don’t you might want to check out my WHY CAN’T I SEE UP CLOSE VIDEO on PRESBYOPIA. But here I am going to describe options for eye glass options for presbyopia.
So the one sentence summary is that with presbyopia you need a different glasses prescription for each distance you work at…one for driving, one for reading, one for computer, etc etc. So that brings us to the first option: Single vision lenses. We use the term single vision to describe lenses that will focus at one distance only.
So you can have SV distance for driving. Single vision reading for reading. And Single vision computer for computer. Basically, we can make a lens that is focused at one distance but will only have a certain depth of field or focus so as you move away from that distance things will get more blurry. The great thing about single vision lens is that everywhere you look in the lens it will be clear…but the downside is you have to switch between glasses to see at different distances.
So taking glasses on and off can be a hassle so if you combine more that one prescription into the same lens….then you get a multifocal.
There are 4 main types of Multifocals
    Multifocal: Bifocal
    Multifocal: Trifocal
    Multifocal Progressives
Multifocal Office Lens or Task Lenses
I describe in the video the differences between bifocals and trifocals and progressives.
I also talk about how there are many different types of progressive and give you some buying tips on progressive lenses.
It is also really important to take note of the office or task specific lens. this is an important lens for those of you that use a computer all day long and it it likely to become your favourite lens.
If you have other questions please leave a comment or question below.
    Have a great optometry day!

Thank you for such a thorough explanation Doctor. You saved me from making a mistake I intuitively thought I'd be making. In the way progressives have been described, I've always thought I would end up sorry to have them. As it turns out, office glasses are exactly what I'm in need of. Thank you again!

Hi thank you for that wonderful explanation, i almost got multifocal , and your video made me realise i need bifocals, as my computer is a desktop monitor that is 4 feet away so i can see very clearly without glasses, in my normal day i only battle to read and see at a distance my intermediate vision is still very good. With love from south africa x

YOUR INFORMATION IS CLEAR AND CONCISE . not many people are communicative and express clearly . i have personally visited 3 ophthalmic stores and all were more confusing with intent for sale , none were focusing HOW DO I FEEL. or pointing out the CONS ! they all were stressing the ADOPTATION OF PROGRESSIVE ETC but i feel BIFOCAL IS THE SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR COMPUTER AND READING (print format) .

Or just get progressive/multifocals with a larger frame. So you can adjust easier with different areas of vision. That's what I did. With anti glare and tint. Thank you for the video. I wonder still what is up with my vision, cause my lenses in my eyes sink in and don't blow out like their supposed to at my age.

Happened upon your video while researching what's new for lens technology as I have an upcoming eye appointment. I never knew about office lenses! I've had progressives for over 10 years now and no one has mentioned office lenses to me. I'm a computer programmer who loves playing mmorpg's when I'm done for the day. So LOTS of computer work. I'm going to be asking my doctor about office lenses. Thank you so much!

Ideally most people would need more than one pair....you need to use the right tool for the right job. Might it be expensive for a good quality lens...yes. But when you think about your eyes and vision...what else do you use everyday? Also many comannies have second pair promotions. My recommendation....skimp on something else.....not your eyes.

I wanna add something here, i have stigmatism since probably born when i turned over 40 and both visions got disturbed. I went to doctor after 3to 4 years she checked according to my previous prescription and gave me new glasses. When i wore em i read in Dr office fine but when i start driving every thing i c far blurry i went back mad, they replaced the glasses 2to 3 times but same thing. I stick to old glasses but world was not same anymore, I then went to different place Dr asked my age and checked both near and far sights, i came back to same world after that.

I’ve allowed about 3 months to get used to these progressives and I’m fed up with not seeing computer or phone well enough. I’m going back to optometrist and maybe I’ll consider office glasses. Another factor not mentioned is frame and slippage. My nose piece is too heavy and the frame slides down so of course that’s making things worse. I find I have to hold my glasses off my nose and look through the bottom most portion, and even that is blurry. Argh.

Getting over 50 SUCKS! - I've heard from Optometrists to avoid bad progressive lenses because they could cause me issues with my peripheral vision. I'm one of the rare people who has high-level peripheral awareness, and I don't want to lose that.
Is there a progressive glass that has zero throughout most of the lens, and only progresses at the near bottom for reader? My ultimate goal would be to find a company who knows how to make true bifocals and simply progresses the lens to meet the "focal" increase.
But a man can dream I guess...

Nice video as you have rightly mentioned that progressive lenses do vary in prices according to brands but that is not good enough using prices as quality/distortion indicator is not correct there has to be certain quality measures to compare lenses rather than using the price as indicator, I am hoping to see another video that explains quality of progressive lenses

I got my prescription by a doctor and ordered a pair of multifocals (I understand they are progressive ones) and a pair with office lenses. With both glasses the short distance vision works some what ok... similarly or just a bit worse than molded plastic cheapo market reading lenses. But, other distances, neither of the glasses really improve my vision in comparison to not wearing glasses at all. The optics shop insists "You have to get used to them." Now I wonder, how much better is it not to see properly with glasses that I paid hundreds for in comparison to me already being used not to see properly with no glasses at all?
Can the glasses be examined by a third party to detect if the glasses actually are made according to the prescription? I guess having the prescription verified would be much more straight forward to do.
I don't get this "getting used to" business to begin with. When I put +2.5 super market reading glasses on, the difference between with and without glasses is clear like a day and night: without those glasses can't read anything, with the glasses I can read everything. Why is the difference not clear like the same way with longer distance zones of the lenses? I really have to put the glasses on and off multiple times and still can't really decide if I see better with or without the glasses. The same goes for both multi focals and office lenses.
This is REALLY a tricky world for a consumer.

    • @GoodOptometryMorning
      @GoodOptometryMorning  3 місяці тому

I agree that you shouldn't have to "get used" to progressives. You may have to learn how to use them and learn what they do and don't do. But 'getting used to' is usually used by opticals who use entry level quality optics progressives and what you need to get used to is poor optics. They are hoping you will just settle and leave them alone...but really they should offer you the option to go into a better quaility lens.

I made the mistake of purchasing two pairs of progressives from Costco based on this video (*Clark Howard: Save More, Spend Less* ua-cam.com/video/Mtyqv1Pru_A/v-deo.html). In fact, I only got the Costco membership for this very reason. One pair was the general-use type and the other pair was for computer use (office task). Both of them were horrendous. Costco's return policy is that if you can't tolerate the progressives, then they'll remake the lenses in single-focus or bifocal. But I wasn't satisfied with that option, so I got them to take them back and issue a full refund. Now, thanks to this video, I'm aware progressives of better quality have larger sweet spots.

    • @jmurphy2611
      @jmurphy2611 Рік тому

I wish I had seen this sooner - I just got the 2 pair of glasses from Costco. I've been wearing progressives for 15 years, so I'm used to progressives. However, I agree that the Costco are not good quality. My computer glasses are ok, but the general use ones give me tunnel vision - can't see clearly unless looking directly straight ahead. Costco said they are nonreturnable -- how did you get a refund? That's what I need - a refund.

He's right, progressives SUCK for computer work. It's the smallest zone on the lens. So you end up needing to buy a second pair for the computer. Which begs the question, if you use a computer all day, why not just get one full frame distance pair and one for closeup computer work.

the problem with Single vision distance is that in everyday life you will like to see upclose and the trouble with Single visino computer glasses is that the range is too small. Everyone could benefit from 3 sets of specs a progressive, an office/task lens and a progressive sunglass.

Have done both over the years, back to bifocals now & probably soon to be tri-focals. How's this for an interesting vision problem: Ptosis induced irregular astigmatism in both eyes, producing the effect of a vertical double image. The droopy eyelids cause a wrinkle in the top of the cornea, causing the astigmatism and the double image. By the end of the day it's so bad that current Rx is completely useless, no difference with or without the glasses for detail vision. Suggestions other than eyelid surgery? The surgery to shorten the eyelids may amplify another issue, that of eyes not closing totally & consistently while sleeping.
