Who won Superbike and Supersport British Championships in the same season? IAN SIMPSON, that's who!

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Ian Simpson has 5 British Championships, 3 TT wins, 5 NW200 race wins and 3 Ulster GP wins to his name - on top of that Simmo is the only man to win Superbike and Supersport titles in the same season as well as winning a Superbike race, a Supersport race and Superstock race in a season before a succession of leg injuries brought his stellar domestic career to an early close. A humble man with an incredible story!

As an IOM resident, TT fan and Road Racing fan, Ian was a formidable competitor, and fondly remembered for his racing achievements 👍👌🇮🇲
Thanks Andy, lovely words and glad you enjoyed it 😊
Thank you Simmo, really enjoyed the chat and hope to see you in Anglesey
Another great podcast Dave. Simmo is a legend 👍
Couldn’t agree more and thanks so much for watching 🙏🏼
That was so, so good to hear from Ian Simpson, really enjoyed it. Watched him race so many times back in the day, hugely talented rider. Fantastic news that he's bringing out a biography, he's far too modest if he thinks no-one will buy it.
A shame Jim Moodie won't do an interview. He's another great name from those times who maybe doesn't realise just how many old fans he still has out here who would love to hear him talk about his career. Maybe he'll reconsider one day.
Ian mentioned Iain Duffus in that interview. Now that's another great rider who would be good to chat to - maybe one to consider for the future.
Thanks for these, really enjoying them.
Thanks as ever, Andrew 🙏🏼 yeah disappointed that Jim politely declined but I fully understand, same with Chris Walker. Iain Duffus is on the list for the summer for sure 🤞🏼
Great show Dave. In the 70,80 years you don’t get to know the riders. Love your show I’ve now heard my hero’s from this era. Grant, Williams, Simpson, from this era. Many thanks looking forward to the next show.
Thanks Paul! The older boys have the best stories, that’s for sure 😁
How good was that to listen too, what a genuine guy, one off Scotlands finest
That’s kind of you, Brian - thanks for watching the show 😊
Brilliant that one, im old enough to have seen Simmo's career, always thought doesn't get the credit he should from a top career. Even more so, is such a wonderful, humble, genuine top top person. 👍
Thanks for your kind words on the show and Simmo, much appreciated 🙂
Spot on that, thank you. Ian is always helpful at the JW trackdays.
However last year (2023) watching Ian and Terry having a little battle together at Anglesey at the classic bike trackday on one of the sessions was an utter privilege to see. Ian on the RC45 and Terry on the OW01. Many came in just so sit on pit wall and watch them trading places having fun up from Church to Rocket, superb stuff.
Thanks Dave, a lovely pod with a genuine man 👍
Cheers Simon, I’m yet to meet a more humble man who’s achieved so much - the man he talks about in the show, Freddie Spencer is very similar.
Great interview. Ian is a unbelievable nice guy. I remember when i raced in British superstock ian helped me out. He came up to knockhill one day to help me set up my bike. He was faster than me after 5 laps on a bike he never rode before. The man has unbelievable speed on a bike and then an all round normal man off it 👍👍
Thank you for sharing that story, Irish! Sums Ian up perfectly 🙂 really pleased you enjoyed out chat, it means a lot 🙏🏼
Brilliant podcast really enjoyed tht one Dave.
I’ve nothing but respect for Ian, a real top bloke who’s been there & done it… 🏴 🏴🏁👍
Thanks Gaz, he’s a grand fella isn’t he 🙂
@@OffTrack_Podcast Ian’s a cracking fella no bs some fantastic wins. I’ll be tuned in for next poscast keep up the great work mate 👍🏁🏴
What a brilliant little interview. So many great anecdotes and stories. What a career. Watched Simmo race so many times at knockhill back in the day. Thanks for the memories
Thanks so much, Robin. So glad you enjoyed the show with Simmo 😊
Fantastic watch Dave, takes me right back to when I first started riding bikes and Ian was racing. Awesome!!👌👌
Thanks so much, Mack! Really appreciate your kind words 😁 Hope you’re well, mate 🙏🏼
All good thanks dude. Charlottes out to Spain this week for testing with the team. Unfortunately I'm not going out with her. Look forward to catching up with you in the paddock this year mate. @@OffTrack_Podcast
I really enjoyed this. You good folks at OffTrack could merchandise some socks, not only would I buy them, but Ian could be the ambassador 🧦 lol
I jest of course 😆
😂 we’ve added them to the HMY Customs list for ‘24 merch… I tried my best with the editing 😋
Great podcast Dave and not before time to recognise Ian's achievements 😎
Thanks for your kind words, and I agree it’s something that needed addressing - hopefully it’ll kick start some more recognition for the fine man 🙏🏼
Fan Tastic !
Ian isn't someone who I think of often but when I've seen that you did podcast with him, I listened to it immediately when I could.
Now you know who's next,
The other Ian, Duffus !
And after that Jim Moodie !!!
I called the Scottish mafia back in the , brian Morrison , McFarlane.Duffus , McPherson of course Mackenzie
So glad you enjoyed it! We’re looking to do a Scotland tour in the late Spring but sadly Jim has politely declined our invitation, he’s happy enough just keeping his head down these days 🙂
@@OffTrack_Podcast oh that's very unfortunate. I've never followed the Road Racing or British scene back then but watching it now retrospectively Jim is my man, really interesting character who I want to know more about.
Otherwise, you're doing brilliant job, just a good old sofa chat.
And I really appreciate the feedback.
Absolutely brilliant interview.Loved the story about Freddie Spencer and the one about the bath.😀
So many more tales Trevor but with his book due out soon it was a nice intro for some to the world of Simmo - we’ll hopefully be back up in Scotland with him before the end of the year 🤞🏼
Top man simmo I'd did British supersport championships at same time you were super smooth & very fast all I ever wanted to do was be as quick as you managed to have a good battle with you & Jim moodie at Oliver's mount good days
He was amazing on the duckhams Norton ❤
He absolutely was, Mark 👊🏼
I remember watching you at knockhill on your yamaha lc your bike was leaps ahead of the rest this was back in 80s what was your secret
Another great interview 👌👌
Thank you, that’s very kind of you 🙂
Just brilliant !! Thankyou for sharing some great stories 👌🏻 somebody buy that man a pair of socks ffs 😂
We’ve added them to the merch list for ‘24, Chris 😁glad you enjoyed the show 🙌🏼
Raced against Ian in the early 80's. Would love to have had this chat with him.
Would love to meet him again one day.
Cheers Steve, he’s still very active with Whit’s track days and he’s all over the place with his new book so hopefully you’ll get to see him again one day
That was pure class! Brilliant. The can of Coke through the sunroof and the hire car stories were comedic gold! Brilliant career - greetings from America.
Thank you Raymond! And thanks for watching over there 🙌🏼🇺🇸 so glad you enjoyed it 😁
Brilliant, love listening to all the stories, simmo was a great rider and a gentleman.
Thanks Fazer, we’ll hopefully get the chance again later in the summer to bring more stories out
Brilliant Simon, loved every minute.
A superb world-class racer and a class apart when it comes to modesty. Other so-called champions should take note.
Nicely put, Lee 👌🏼
Quality interview.
Ian simpson CLASS
Cheers, Mark! Yeah he’s a great fella and it was a privilege to sit with him
Legend
Pretty damned impressive stats to start with there Dave wow !! great interview guys so interesting such fantastic days back then even when they had crap tyres in comparison to today , and some true bravery with the kit back then .I have to chuckle when Ian says 3 seconds is forever between the bikes when you look at a stopwatch and wait for 3 seconds it's nothing really although in racing it obviously is .I am really surprised to hear that is riding on the road I really thought that very few of the guys actually ride on the road fabulous luv mad mark such a good watch cheers guys had a great time watching this .👌👍
Thank you CM! Yeah when you think about it 3s in racing is a yawning chasm when today they’re chasing tenths (the most expensive part of racing is that last second of a gap). Big difference between Charlie’s time and Simmo’s time and then Simmo to today, fascinating how things have progressed in that time 😊 so glad you enjoyed it CM and thanks for watching as always 👊🏼
Love Simmo…met him on the boat coming back from the Cookstown or Tandragee in 2018…when I got into bikes in 1996 it was himself,Rutter & Duffus that were the top boys….best of luck with the book! I’ll certainly buy it ..we go down the A76 to Dumfries from March to August every Fri night…get yer bike out Simmo 😎
I spent two nights and two bottles of whisky watching this... Absolutely brilliant.. 🏁🏁🏁🏁
No better review than that 😁 thank you so very much 🙏🏼
@@OffTrack_Podcast doesn't help my hangovers😂😂😂
@@Team-fabulous Fair point! 😂
Finally got hold of Simmo , now to get hold of Moodie , had some good times with both at IOM in the 90s.....
We’ve tried, Chris! Jim’s politely declined as he’s quite happy to sail along under the radar these days
New jim quite well when he was racing , even my partner was at school with him , and was a few parties at his house funny enough brian Morrison was always found in the kitchen.
Would need a lawyer to sit with him for his stories
I’m going to sound like an old Brogan record, but Ian thank you for sharing some of your stories with us all as well as listening to your other compadres of your era. And thanks again for bringing them to us Dave 👍
Absolutely my pleasure, Nick. The older boys definitely have the best stories and Ian was up there with best 😁
Cracking pod 👍🏻..But FFS buy a pair of socks Simmo ! 🤣
😂😂
😁 get him told, Stuart
Best interview yet.
Thanks Adrian, no pressure to try and improve on that then 😁
Thats was an awesome podcast Dave. Tha is a million 👍👌
You’re very welcome, JNB 🙌🏼
Ian Simpson what a great man had a great racing career. As he says his Honda RC45 is with the Rev’it’Red classic collection usually at most meetings alongside the John chapman classic collection and great banter especially Col Morris a personal friend of mine you should have him on Dave lots of stories to tell great pod again Dave thank you. 🤟
Thanks Rod! Maybe we can get something arranged for the summer as well be heading up again when the weather improves but this time on two wheels ✊🏼
Great podcast. Loved the Freddie Spencer story.
It was a cracker! Thanks for watching, it’s really appreciated 🙌🏼
What a sound bloke 👍
No question! Thanks, Alan 🙏🏼
2 hours of purgatory 😂 Only kidding Simmo 😉😊
😂
Great interview 😭😭
Thank you, William 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Brilliant ✊✊
Thank you 🙏🏼
Sorry to hear that the weekends event was your last race Ian but we all say that!
Great podcast.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Scotland's best sports...anything with wheels, just wish the media wasn't obsessed with something we're rubbish at,football...another Scottish legend!
A rich history with our great sport 🏴
legend,,,,,,,, you would have some craic out with him for a night,,,,,,, must check out his tours,,,,, a pleasure to listen to...
Thanks Tim, so glad you enjoyed it - such a great fella 😊
Get that body a pair o socks
I tried to cover them up as best I could 😁
Thanks
Marti thank you so much, that’s a coffee for our travels next week as we visit Hiscott, Haydon and Parrish 🙏🏼
@OffTrack_Podcast James Haydon (and Jamie Robinson ) was an exceptional 250 rider against big names in his day he doesn't get much recognition for
@@martiboy44 Agreed completely, it was really cool to listen to his career recap on Tuesday 😊
