  • In this video, Producer and Composer Eddie Grey takes you through learning the SSL Channel Strip (E and G Versions). Most Producers have one of these in their arsenal but they do not actually know how to use it nor what it does. This acclaimed channel strip can make your drums better, sound great on acoustic guitars and can really flesh out any vocal performance.
    If you are tired of not knowing what the SSL EQ does, then this is the video for you. Eddie will break down each parameter in detail and demo how quickly you can improve your sound if you know what you are doing.

    For the 4K E and B, and the other emulations of G/B series, the numbers on the filter mean NOTHING. Sometimes 250 high pass is really 50 high pass. It’s really bad, use your ears. The ch strip 2 doesn’t have this problem though

    Great Video! This was very useful to see and hear. I really like the ssl sound too. I have the Waves and Universal Audio versions. Trying to test out/learn the compression, gate, and little magic buttons options too. Loved the visual display plugin analyzer...is there a plugin you would suggest that I could use like this? Thanks again.

    Really appreciate this break down. At this point most of the plugins sound great, even the stock ones are more than capable of generating an awesome mix. My experience is less is more..for my particular needs. Having too many options caused my productivity to suffer. Guilty of always trying different plugins that basically do the same thing. My solution..commit to one or two eq's and one or two compressors. My results have sky rocketed. I exclusively use the SSL Channel Strip 2 and the SSL 4KB. I couldn't be happier and most of all, the muscle memory developed from using the same plugin makes mixing faster and more efficient.

    Great video. It perfectly explains the reason why i will always only use parametric EQ's with visualizers and floating bands, cause for me, it's important to know truly what the EQ is doing to the entire frequency spectrum, instead of even having to use something like plugin doctor in the first place. I don't consider it mixing with my eyes because it's not like im getting any visual info of the signal, i just wanna know what my curves look like so i can notice any patterns over the course of my mixing career

    Okay, I had to go back and check my student notes but I'm pretty sure the "F" under the EQ section of an SSL channel strip means frequency and not filter. Only the upper left controls are the filters. I was scratching my head over here every time you called the EQ band control a filter.

    What would be the reason to use something like this, rather than something like a FabFilter ProQ3?

    • @_TheModernCreative
      @_TheModernCreative  3 роки тому +4

      It’s a different tool. One is surgical and one is for the sound. The Q3 does not have an inherent sound - it is transparent but a channel strip of this nature comes with a distinct set of EQ curves that you have heard on thousands of records so the brain knows and likes the sound. I particularly like it for broad strokes and less meticulous choices. I am also obsessed with the dynamics section which I did not cover on the vid but will soon. Stay Up!

    • @BobCorey
      @BobCorey Рік тому

      @@_TheModernCreative So what if you use the Q3 (or any other similar eq) in the same manner? (same wide curving...brain would accept it the same way, right?)

    • @_TheModernCreative
      @_TheModernCreative  Рік тому +2

      Not necessarily as you are not capturing the inherent saturation/character of the SSL strip - hope the helps@@BobCorey

    Very informative video.
    I have been considering buying the UC1, but have not pulled the trigger yet. I think what slowed my decision is that I became aware of the Rocksolid Channel Strip controller which can be mapped to other EQ Plugins (as well as control the SSL EQ ). It also works on other types of plugins, like Compressors, Gates, etc...(With it's mapping abilities and included software)
    The SSL clearly has some features that the Rocksolid does not, (and the SSL unit looks stellar).
    There's about a $430 difference, which will be $530 when the current SSL sale is over. (The EC1 is currently $799...Then back up to $899).
    I really like the SSL unit, but I want to take my time before I commit as the Rocksolid unit is very tempting with it's mapping abilities....
    Very well done video and great details...Thanks for doing it.

    I like your comparison about going to the liquor store. I'd take it a step further and say it's like driving a nice car versus riding a bicycle. Having your hands on this thing makes an actual difference. Being able to close your eyes and change two knobs at the same time and developing muscle memory with the machine takes mixing out of your eyes and analytical thinking and instead engages your body and emotional thinking.

    I have a few reviews of the UC1 and UF8 workflows on my channel. One think to not, for those who don't know, is that the UC1 is a 9000K console from 2002, not a 4000E, which is the famous SSL sound. The 9000 series is different. But, if you press the "E" button it engages a 4000E EQ section.
