  • The latest Garage Update, or in this case, CARBON UPDATE!
    In the last Garage Update, I had shown the beginnings of refurb work that I was doing to the Mountune rear wing extension lip that I removed from my MK3 Ford Focus RS - this has turned into a whole thing which I will get into after telling you about the shiny new items I install from red5 carbon!
    A long time ago now I installed the Tufskinz steering wheel trim which are like gel badges with a layer of real carbon in the middle. This was a cool, convenient and easy way to get carbon trim on the Focus RS steering wheel but I am now upgrading this mod with next level items from red5 carbon!
    Essentially the red5 items go in the same locations but are made of proper, pure, solid carbon fibre and are also more extensively covering of all areas while also not looking 'domed' like the Tufskinz. All of this comes together to make it look entirely seamless with the rest of the steering wheel and more 'legit'!
    I show the install process, from prepping the areas to cleaning and conditioning the steering wheel leather, to getting the new red5 carbon items installed!
    I am super happy with this mod upgrade! The steering wheel looks better than ever with epic real carbon fibre and brand new looking leather!
    So back to issues with Mountune - previously, I noticed that the clear coat was failing on the Mountune carbon fibre rear wing extension, removed the spoiler lip and then removed the old gunk/adhesive from the original install before moving on to clear coat removal.
    In this update, I finish removing the failed clear coat - a process that took a long time as I wanted to protect the carbon weave from damage, which was successful I am happy to report and the raw carbon looks super cool without clear coat but of course we need a protective clear coat so on we go!
    Initially, I didn't think I would get the new clear coat on before finishing this video but in fact I did so I show you the freshly clear coated product just 24 hours after application and it looks even better than I could have hoped for!
    The new clear is a beautiful level of gloss and the weave underneath seems to pop way more than it did with the Mountune satin clear coat, even when new, so that is great!
    The work isn't quite done on the refurbished carbon lip though, I need to sort out some orange peel (totally normal part of the clear coating spray process) and before doing this, it needs to fully harden but so far so good!
    So the original plan was to get a replacement carbon lip installed. Mountune commented on a social media post that I made about the failed carbon, asking me to contact their team for a 'reasonable solution' which (after offensively implying that it was my fault somehow) was to sell me another carbon lip at a much reduced price.
    I went for it so that I could get it installed while taking my time with the refurb work on the original lip and then when the Mountune clear coat fails again, swap my original back in. This didn't go so well though!
    When installing, I found that the edges would not get far enough in to meet the surface of the rear wing, no matter how much or how I applied pressure. I removed it again and meticulously removed the black gunk and then test fitted my old lip and indeed it fits. This new one I also noticed in the middle doesn't get close to the line left by the old lip, again emphasising that it doesn't fit all the way on the RS spoiler - the conclusion? Mountune sent me a dud!
    This new lip simply does not fit and thus is not fit for purpose which somewhat annoys me as Mountune took more money from me just to mess me about!
    It will be returned but an extra kick in the teeth is that Mountune are forcing me to pay for the return even though this is 100% their fault - absolutely terrible customer service!
    There are a few observations that suggest a 'bait and switch' over what they used to sell for these carbon lips. The old lips were packaged differently and had a manufacturer's sticker from a place in Mexico - the new one has no such sticker. This suggests a different manufacture was used and given that it doesn't fit, suggests the mould they used is simply wrong. Probably a cost saving (and corner cutting) measure!

    It's good that you highlight the inadequacies of Mountune & their poor customer service. I have encountered problems with their products as well, the lip spoiler being one of them! (mine came in a VUHL Composites branded box). Hopefully people are waking up to the fact that instead of being a premium brand selling quality products, Mountune manufacture very little, if anything themselves, instead they just outsource and have their logo appended, adding a significant price mark-up too. It's a salutary lesson, don't believe the Mountune hype.

    Hello Adam that’s poor from MT, like you say nearly all of their stuff’s made by someone else, carries a price premium and postage costs are high too. In your case the behaviour is poor and doesn’t do anything for their PR at all.
    Hope you get it sorted and at least the Red 5 Carbon additions look great bud!👍🏻

      Not on my car but on a relative's ST line one came loose so I just prepared the area and glued it back in place

    Will you continue giving mountune your money for other parts?

      Nah, they have nothing left that I would want to buy anyway. Their big turbo setup for the mk3 rs has been widely panned by anyone who ever bought it

    How was the fitment on the side with the cruise control?
    Fitted perfectly or do you had to do some adjustments?
    Thanks for reply mate!

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  2 місяці тому

      no adjustments made, the fit with cruise control is very tight. If you want to compensate, simply don't put any sticky tape on the bit that slots in above the cruise control buttons and you are good to go

    Will u ever get the car on wheel?

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  2 місяці тому

      no sir, the reason being that they are nice to look at of course but gloss carbon could be slippy under the hands. If I was going to change the wheel entirely then it would likely be full alcantara
