Nicely done! Something that I bought and use with all of my power tools is a vacuum activated switch. You connect your dust collection system (or shopvac) to one outlet and any of your dust-generating tools to the other outlet. When the saw is turned on, the vacuum comes on too, then stays on for about 5 seconds after the saw shuts off. Got mine on Amazon and I love it. I'm going to make a collection hood like yours over the Christmas holiday break! Terrific idea!
This is an outstanding plan. I was just starting to imagine something like this, and here it is fully formed and it looks to be a great success as you have constructed it. Thank you very much for posting.
Thanks Ian! It works pretty good. The only thing I would add, which I haven't done yet, is a rubber flap of sorts on the top. Some larger chips will get flung out the opening at the top. It's not a big deal since I'm mainly concerned with capturing finer dust, but it would help capture more with a flap. A flap would close in the top but still allow the full travel of the saw. Good luck if you build one. G.
Brilliant..I've been looking for something like this..if I can get 80% I'll be happy..I might try taping some thin flexible plastic wings to the sides of the shroud to see if it can encapsulate even more dust. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the followup Ian! That's a very nice take on what I did- possibly better! It looks like it works great! I like that you changed the shape and put the port on the side. It seems it would allow the setup to be closer to the wall- very cool! Take care, G.
Ian Vollers I saw the flip up, but didn't quite understand what it was for. I see now and it's a good use of space which also provides an extended support surface when using your chop saw setup. You should consider shooting a clip of your station- it looks like, from what I could see, you've incorporated a lot in a little amount of space. G.
Ian Vollers I know what you mean about space efficiency. Here's a video of my micro shop if you want to check it out. It's hard to believe I can do anything in here- and this is an old video and I've got more in here now...lol. Super Micro Shop Tour I had to erect a temporary shop in my yard for my home remodel project. This is where my wood working tools are now. I don't know where they're going to go when I take it down... Drop me a line when you show your setup so I can check it out. Take care Ian, G.
Great idea. I am fed up with all the dust floating around. What materials did you use for this? And do you have a construction plan? I would really like to make this. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks Tony! I used 5/8" MDF to make mine, but any sheet good could be used. No, I don't have any construction plans. I used cardboard to make the basic templates/design to fit my saw, then transferred them to the wood for cutting. Good luck, G.
That's interesting. I now have a 12" Bosch glide and it's collection bag is somewhat useless. I may make a hood similar this at some point to capture more. Take care, G.

Thanks! I've seen those switches before and they look like a cool product. Good luck building yours. Thanks, G.

Thank you, I am going to build one this weekend and will keep that in mind. Kind regards!
Ian Vollers
No problem, Ian. Good luck with your build, G.
This is the best dust hood I have seen. Wonderful design
Thanks Duckie! Take care, G.
This works really well. I liked the 90 degree elbow on the port to direct the dust down. I plan to build one soon.
It does Jim! The elbow was something my saw had but it does a good job if directing the dust. Good luck with your build! G.
It is a beau! Thanks for the idea and sharing.
Thanks Braulio! Take care, G.

Thanks Fifi! Glad it was inspirational. It does work great, but for sure- do whatever you can come up with to capture even more. Good luck, G.
that thing is awesome. I will be making one of these for sure.
Thanks Chris! It does work quite well. Good luck with your build, G.
One of the better ones I’ve seen
Thanks James! Take care, G.
Great system. MDF makes a real mess to cut. I am going to build one similar for my saw -- Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, MDF is a real mess for sure! Good luck, G.
Looks like a Winner... Not to bulky either...
Good job...
Greg
Thanks Greg! Good luck, G.
Excellent idea. thank you for sharing. I will start adapting your idea to my Dewalt 12"
Thanks! Good luck with your build. G.
Finally put it together, the design works great. Here's the followup video: Miter Saw Dust Collection
Thank you again for the inspiration!

***** Yep, I had to design it to fit my flip-up workbench top, very tight clearance behind the saw. Glad you like it man, cheers!

***** Definitely, I tried to make it as space-efficient as I could in my multi-use garage. I'll shoot something coming up here.

Incredible difference! Thanks!
Thanks Roddy! It works well for what it is. Good luck, G.
Nice job!👍🏼😉

Great built
is it 3D printed ?
Thanks. No, it was made from mdf. Take care, G.
excellent work, Thanks
Eulayses Perry Thanks Eulayses! Take care, G.
I like it... Will try it on my DeWalt....
Thanks and good deal! Let me know how it works out. Good luck, G.
Build it and you shall see... LoL
in my milwaukee saw, if I dont connect a hose, dust is ejected to the front..
That's interesting. I now have a 12" Bosch glide and it's collection bag is somewhat useless. I may make a hood similar this at some point to capture more. Take care, G.
excellent!
Thank Jeff! Good luck, G.
Are you working on a new design for the new saw?
+MrMnchstr
Not yet since I've only been using it in open air, but rest assured I will post the setup when I do! Take care, G.
Sweet and dust is gone
Thanks Jeff! It does work quite well. Take care, G.
Sorry you stated it was 5/8" met. doh!
LOL! No problem! Take care, G.
That thing sucks ! hahahah
That is does! G.
