How to Catch Wild Shiners

- In this video I take you along as I go out and catch wild golden shiners for bass fishing. I chum my spots with chicken feed. I tend to choose spots on the outside of cover, such as lily pads, reeds, Kissimmee grass, etc. I prefer spots that are 4 to 8 feet deep and have a sandy bottom. I bait 5 to 8 spots and then go back to my first spot to start throwing the net. Often I will re-bait the spots as I work through them so I can make another pass.
I also have a video showing more details on my holding tank:

That’s what we do to catch catfish. But we chum them up with fermented hen scratch in a tote sack. Baited our holes And some times your method to catch minnows and perch for trot lines. Thanks for sharing brother
Fun times catching those sneaky little buggers. Big like 16 here hope you are having a great week . 😀👍
I've always wondered how you caught your shiners. Its nice to learn something new in the fishing world. Good job on those shiners. Thanks for sharing!👍
Thank you! It's just a matter of trial and error, looking for those shiners. I tend to keep finding them in the same places.
Nice man! Cool to get out and get your own bait. Way to put that boat leak to good use haha!
That’s a great bait tank I used to haul live catfish and. Tilapia we used fiberglass tanks and Liquid Oxygen on pvc pipes with small holes drilled in them worked great. You have a great set up on and off the boat.
Thank you. It gets the job done. That's the only reason I am able to fish with shiners.
Excellent video boss, I’ll have to check out some chicken feed…nice haul.
Nice setup! Looks like it's almost as fun as catching those big bass.
Nice job Rob, heck im doing good to get a good throw on a five foot net. I know I couldn't get an 8 foot net to open up. Where I fish those bream would be money. Stay safe brother 👍🙏
Get your self a bigger net, their more forgiving, One of my last vids is about that.
I figured u had a tank somewhere at the house😂
Never fish with them but I Kno how to gettem now, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for making an Excellent instructional video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!!
Thanks for sharing how you catch shiners ! Ours are tiny compacted to those different species I would think ! Stay safe stay healthy
I filmed that a couple of weeks ago. I am on some bigger than those in good quantity now.
so beautiful video great vIdeo good luck for future I am big fan of you I am supporting you
Great job on the video brother I see your enjoying your vacation 😂 I need to set me up a tank when I move. I used to catch a bunch of shiners when I was younger. I don’t know if them places still hold shiners or not. Keep up the great work man!
Thank you! Can't wait until all this craziness is over and we can go fishing together again!!
Very cool video my friend 👍
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Nice haul I want to do it for the shad here in my lake but I hear they don't love long once there caught not like the minnow or shinners
We have the same problem with shad here. I have a portable 20 gallon live well that I put in my bass boat when I want to fish with them. I can only keep shad alive for a few hours.
@@ThatShinerGuy ok that's the same thing my dad Said good to hear from someone who does it often
That Shiner Guy, once you put out the wet chicken feed how long do you wait to cast a net? I love you Jon boat setup. Hard to beat.
Thank you very much!! I run around and bait 3 or 4 spots while it soaks, Probably 10 to 15 minutes. I re-bait each spot and hit it again.
@@ThatShinerGuy awesome. Thanks for that tip.
Cool intro 😂 nice video I don’t think we have shiners around here though ☹️
I wish I can get shinners like that ours cost 1.29 the large ones each
cant cast net in new jersey. bs. nice system u got goin. im stuck with g40 minnow traps.
Thanks! I've seen guys catch shiners on a rod and reel. Definitely easier with a cast net.
Awesome information bro!! Thank you for sharing this. How long do the shiners stay alive in your tank?
Several weeks in cooler weather with almost no losses. I can still keep them for a while in the summer too, but some die off.
That Shiner Guy that’s awesome!!
How do you regulate the water temp in the hot months?
I haven't had any luck with that yet. I have heard that some people cool the water with a refrigerated system but I haven't tried that yet.
ive had some wild shiners ive bought from the local bait shop, and the fishing is slow, i have them in a tank, could i or should i feed them anything? like chicken feed since ive had them for like a week now? thanks...
You should be okay for several weeks. If you do feed them, be ready to change the water and clean the filter daily.
@@ThatShinerGuy ah ok.. good to know, only down for 2 weeks.. and i do a partial water change every day and clean the filters too! :) thanks!
@@bigfishbrau cool. Let me know how you do!!
@@ThatShinerGuy well it started out slow the first couple days with the cold and east wind.. wed. we only had 2 bites, and hooked one, but that was a 10 lber on the nose! just got back today, got a 6.10, 7.10 and a 10.8! not catching much but the size is ridiculous! i lost a big one yesterday too, so that might have been 3 days in a row with a double digit fish!!
That is awesome!!!!!
Love the channel! How long will they keep in your tank?
Thank you! In cooler weather I can keep them for several weeks. As the weather gets hotter (air temps above the mid 80s) i lose a few daily but am still able to maintain a good amount.
@@ThatShinerGuy Fantastic. Thanks so much and keep those shiner fishing videos rolling!
I tried your method in my pond but i only catch common minnows and sunfish do ponds have shiners in it? (Btw i live in Canada) do shiners live there or only Usa?
I am not sure about shiners up north unfortunately. In Florida many lakes have them.
What kind of chicken feed is that? And where do you get it?
I usually go to Tractor Supply but any farm store will have chicken feed. Doesn't really matter what brand. I usually use pellets but crumbles works too.
How long do you wait until you come back to the chum?
Maybe 10 minutes or so. By the time I bait 6 or 7 spots I go right back and start throwing on my first spot.
@@ThatShinerGuy Awesome thanks!
What kind of chicken feed
I don't think it matters. Sometimes I use layer pellets and sometimes I use crumbles. Some guys buy hog feed.
👍😎
What's that fish that was in the last cast? Looks like a crappie. "Lie still! Lie Still! If you don't move, he'll throw you back." *flop flop flop*
Pretty sure that is a bluegill, might be a bream. Hard for me to tell sometimes.
