• Red Rocks to Mountain ...
From deep red rock and canyons carved by time to soaring mountains ranges and remnants of the past, the Red Rocks to Mountain Tops adventure ride pays homage to the rich culture, mining history, and sweeping frontier that shaped the Wild West.
This adventure route has been years in the making and showcases some of the most spectacular views the West has to offer. Winding with the Colorado River, summiting 13,000’ mountain passes, and traveling by abandoned mines, powerful waterfalls, and varied historical landmarks, the trail is guaranteed to take your breath away.
As part of our RM Rides series, we’ve documented the ride and put it together in a video series and companion blog post, making it easy for you to plan your own Red Rocks to Mountain Tops adventure. We’ve provided the GPS files below so you can follow our same route.

I have rode Black Bear on my KTM 990 and my Husaberg 570, the Berg was much moe-betta!! haha. Nice job Fellas!
Awsome ride guys!
If you ever get a chance to do this ride, make sure to take photos by "Engineer Pass Sign" and between "Bears Ears" looking south. Post them on your social media and tag us to win great swag! We have many rides like this, and hope you guys get a chance to ride them all!
Nice to see a bunch of guys get together and Share the outdoors. Doesn't get any better than this.
I've never dreamed of traveling to the US just to ride off-road...until now! Bucket list ride!
It's my dream also 🤠
@Oldschool1973 That's a great dream.
The Switchbacks at 4:51 is AWESOME video.
Ripping through the woods. Leaves falling. Crisp temps. Good friends.
I always wish i could live for a year in a moment like that.
My dad took me on that pass in his 1962 Jeep pickup in 1976. We also did another pass nearby. It was thrilling as a young lad.
fantastic video and the bikes are all so reliable!
14:58 I really enjoy my 300cc dualsport but it must be insanely fun grabbing a big a** handful on a large cc adv bike
Best start to any day and video..coffee pot! Always juice it up first. Very good drone work of the beautiful landscape. Thanks for sharing again gentlemen
Did Black Bear 3 years ago on an 800GS with a few friends. One of which said that Black Bear "wasn't too bad". The ride up to the Tundra was great. The short steep ledge downhill section made us all stop at the top then decide to ride each bike down with the bike off and using clutch and front brake while everyone else spotted them. Not as heroic but we got down without injury or damage. The view is amazing. Nice video. Looks like you guys have a blast on these rides.
Because of this video my wife and I are heading out on these roads going from Montrose (our home town) to Moab this week in the 4runner. Thanks for route planning help
I pray i find good friend's to share the outdoors with on two wheels.
Great footage, the various mounts the drone work, in combination with the narration. I only wish I could edit like that. Fantastic guys, thank you for sharing
Really enjoyed the woods riding scenery with the changing leaves. Great photography and editing.👍
Thanks for following along! With views this good, it made my job easy! - Josh
Well done...
Great cast of characters. Skilled riders.
Nice video. Inspirational.
Thank you for bringing us along.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You all rock, big time! Enjoyed the commentary as well. Even if I had a bike that could handle that drop, not sure I could handle it.
Great adventure ride! Really enjoy watching with the mix of bikes that you all are riding. That's some tough terrain for sure! Beautiful scenery and great video editing. Thanks.
Amazing Ride,amazing places,amazing Scenery!!!
This was a real treat
Good video, thanks for sharing! Dunton has one day stays where you can enjoy a relaxing day there for a reasonable price without committing to a long/expensive stay. They will feed you and give you access to the hot springs.
Great video series, congratulations guys! I did Black Bear and it was the scariest thing I have ever done on a fully laden motorcycle. No video does justice to just how awful those "drop offs" are!
Thanks again! It’s good to see the DRZ still going on these adventures with the much more advanced machines. I have a DRZ400SM
I bought a set of S wheels for just this sort of thing. I haven’t put them on yet but have mounted some tires from you guys up.
We love to old DRZ! It's such a well rounded bike for these kind of rides! Definitely get that thing out and stretch it's legs! - Josh
Grew up there, trully blessed!
I just got back from a two week trip,
I spent a week in Silverton/Ouray/Telluride and loved every minute of it. And yes I road my Africa Twin down Black Bear Pass. I was told not to take an adventure bike down it,
but I like a challenge!
Was it sketchy? Yes!
But I had to give it a go or I would never know if it could be done. :-)
I definitely want to go back!
It really is amazing country out there! With the views along black bear pass, it's definitely worth the challenge! Glad to hear you made it unscathed.
Thanks for following along with us Jason! - Josh
I rode my VStrom 650 down Black Bear pass.
But, only the once.
@@youtubeaccount9058 now that would be tough on that bike.
Great advertisement for “why not to buy a KTM”, klr/dr400/AT are the clear choices! But awesome video!
next ride, make sure to mic your communications to hear your smack talk. Loved the video, I did Colorado passes 4 years ago, it was a blast. i do not think I am at "Black Bear" level riding just yet, my bike is too big (KTM 1290SAR). I may rent an Enduro type of bike to try it out one day.
"elevated heart rate" on bear is a nice way to put it. Had to clean out my A.R.C. pants on that one. Twice. And I look forward to doing it again.
It looks like you guys handled the pass just fine! Slow and steady is the way to go! Especially on the KLR 🤘- Josh
Thanks. The year before, the guy on the 990 fell over in the same spot and I made it no problem. I should've known not to stop there. Lol. I'll do better next time!
Bliss! Loved it
This looks like a nice place to go riding
i wish i could ride these. maybe one day
Happy and Jealous for/of you guys!
Amazing views
It must be something going down those rocky and narrow trails along the edge of the mountains on the Africa Twin or any large bike for that matter? The rider must have long legs??? Thanks for posting, great video!!
You guys pulling out of Ouray is rubbing in the fact that my wife and I had to cut our 8-day vacation out the last week short due to the derecho storm that blew through Iowa. Kind of like the tornado did that blew through my hometown two years ago while we were just outside of Netherland CO. We're not allowed to go to Colorado in August. So far Moab in October has proven to be uneventful here while we're gone.
Yeah, crazy storm! I hope all is well for you and your town! - Justin
Nederland. ;-)
What's the first song playing in the background called at the start of the video. Does anyone know? Much appreciated thanks! Can't get it out of my head haha. mmmhmmm mmmhhmmm 🤗
dude those swedish fish are dangerousss lol i want some now
The website is no longer live. I would love to do this red tops to mountain tops ride. Can you please provide route details including GPS files?
Black barry pass down hill is a serious one, how that Africa twin do ?
michael ludeke I would do it again..
I wish I could turn off the front ABS
On the steps both tires are touching the edge of steps at the same time and feels like it doesn’t want to stop.
I took it slower than I thought I would because of it.
I lost my balance on one of the first steps and it threw me to the left so I stopped and the rest of the way I paddled and never got back up on pegs. I’d like to do it again faster and stay on the pegs.
How about a T7 🤪
I’d like to try one.
Hey what are you guys using for Com Units? Awesome video!
We have been using the Cardo PackTalks for years now and have really liked them!
www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/cardo-systems-packtalk-bold-jbl-system-p
Professional and technical, I was expecting Redbull riders, I think I had my daughter riding stuff like that when she was 8, probably might have been worth watching if there was no disclaimer, I got bored.
Didn’t want to spend the night at the 3-Step Hideaway? Surprised since you were right there and it’s specifically geared to the ADVrider crowd.
Very cool video! I'm getting my first adventure bike soon and definitely adding this to the bucket list! Do you have more information on the bikes y'all were riding?
this looks like so much fun. screw sleeping on the ground. hotels all the way 👍😁
I love these but the Steps at Black Bear scare the shit out of me
Rightfully so!
My first time there (several years ago), Ray and I rode our KLR 650s up that (from the telluride side)! It abut killed us! I learned real quick why it is a one-way trail. - Justin
@@rmatvmc Holy shit, the only thing worse than going down Black Bear would be going up it.
Me too!
I dont wish to be an alarmist ,but i think there was some one in a whit jeep that was following you guys
I would love to ride this section.
Is there anywhere posted what bikes were on this trip? I think it would be nice for people to know the different sizes and what bikes were used to determine if what they have is sufficient or, like me buying a good used one for this epic trip. Certainly a bucket list trip that's for sure.
In episode 1 we show all the riders and their bikes. You can check that out here: ua-cam.com/video/pV_MC1Qua2M/v-deo.html
@@rmatvmc Cool, thanks for responding. You guys are awesome.
Great video!!! I’m trying to decide between a honda XR650L or KLR650. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I would like to do the trial from Mexico to Canada. I know the Honda XR650L is better suited for off road technical trials. Is the majority of the trail well maintained and better suited for the KLR? or more rugged in which case the XR may be better? Which would you prefer for the entire trial?
you nailed it. KLR is better on the road and the XR is better off. I don't know what trails you will be riding. We had an XR for a while. It got worse gas mileage than the klr, so you may want to consider that as well. - Justin
I have not ridden the Yamaha T7 but from watching the reviews I would give it a try for your ride.
i wonder if people have done trails like this on a setup vstrom, or versys 650, without breaking them
Man great little series of content. Some sketchy spots along this ride...what are your thoughts on doing this on a BMW1250. Especially BBPass here on day 3.....?
You'd probably be better on throwing that thing off a cliff and walking on foot
If you take the 1250 don’t do it alone and you better be a very experienced off-road on a big bike.
I did it on an Africa Twin with MotoZ Desert H/T tires but you would be much happier on a smaller bike.
Some of these bikes you show are dual sport bikes, not adventure bikes.. But whatever. For the record, I did it 2up on a Vstrom with hard cases fully loaded with camping gear. Not for the faint of heart but doable with patience. Still love ya Rocky Mountain ATV.
Dual sport/adventure - It gets pretty gray. I would say it is how you use it. - Justin
Would it be possible to get a DVD with this entire trip on it?
Super!❤️👍🏻🇺🇸
I’m curious about what tire you are running on your 790 for a trip like this? I am still trying to find one I like.
Eric was trying out the Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross AX41 for this ride!
Rocky Mountain ATV MC ok thanks. I have been running that tire myself. I like the traction and handling but not how quickly the rear tire wares.
Any change ya'll would share a GPx for this trip?
The first link in the description will take you to a page where you can see our full GPS route.
How do you guys like the Olympus panniers??
What Panniers is Eric using on the 790???
The Olympus panniers are sweet! They've got all the features we've always wanted from soft luggage for these rides! Awesome blend of durability and functionality. Eric was running the Tusk Highland Rackless System on his 790 for this ride. - Josh
@@rmatvmc thanks for the feedback
I would love to see what the Olympus panniers look like on the 790, seems like the pannier racks have been on back order for a while.
Im having a tough time deciding between the Highland or the Olympus
I live there! Now I guess you get to figure out which there I'm referring to.
I'll spend the rest of my life trying to figure it out.
Mans fascination with falling water is funny.
BUILD A RACE TRACK UP THERE WITH A REALITY SHOW MOTOCROSS
What was luggage setups?
Come on, you guys are about the same age as me. Church Rock is obviously Sgt. Peppers Yellow Submarine from the Beatles.
Eric are you riding the older 690? in this video?
In episode 1 we show all the riders and which bike they're on if you want to check that out here: ua-cam.com/video/pV_MC1Qua2M/v-deo.html. Eric is riding a 2019 KTM 790 Adventure!
Correction:
Ophir pass is like a 4 lane hard packed freeway compared to Black Bear Pass.
You made it sound slightly easier.....it’s way way way easier.
But not nearly as beautiful as BBear.
Otherwise nice video.
You’re welcome !
what comm units are you using?
We're all running the Cardo Packtalk Bold Units! - Josh www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/cardo-systems-packtalk-bold-jbl-system-p
No wheelies once you hit pavement? Maybe that is my tradition and no one elses. :)
Filmed last year?
He said they were doing it in September didn't he? At least, he said that is the best time of year to do it. He mentioned a recent forest fire, you might be able to figure out when it was from that.
@@ntdscherer the dead giveaway to me were the leaves and fall colors. That hasn't happened yet this year in CO and it usually only lasts a week or two
@@va7oloko Great point, I didn't think about that.
Do a five miles of hell challange on 1000$ dirtbikes.
I cannot agree more. That would be super fun!!
How do you guys do fuel stops so that they don’t turn into a 9 guy credit card clusterfuck??Great videography!!! The kid on the Honda filming needs to crack a wheelie once in a while!!
wait this is what u guys do for a living well its confirmed there is a god so jelly
It looks so non scary on video, but it's a different story in real life.
This ride but on 500$ bikes
Your on a dual sport, NOT an adventure bike. I saw one adventure bike the Africa twin, so don't talk like you did anything difficult.. on a dual sport! I hope you understand the weight difference.
