  • How to Repair and Re-dye Cracked and Worn Leather Car Seats.
    My Ferrari drivers seat bolster is looking a bit worse for wear, and that's because it's been repaired before.
    To fix and re-dye the seat I'm first going to have to investigate the problems, then remove the repair and finally repair and re-dye the seat.
    I've never dyed a seat before, but I found that the best approach is time and patience.
    I removed the seat from the car to make life easier, but you could easily do it in situ.
    Repairing and Re-Dying Leather Car Seats is definitely something you can do at home, but I do recommend using an airbrush. Although you can sponge it on, I find that the airbrush makes it easier to get an OEM finish. I use a cheap £25 airbrush and airbrush compressor that I've had for years.
    I took professional advice from Bespoke Leathering (you may have seen them on Car S.O.S on Nat Geo) beforehand and they helped loads with some great advice.
    All of the products can be purchased from their website: bespokeleathering.com
    [Always be mindful of Airbags and Pre-Tensioners when dealing with seats. Luckily mine doesn't have any airbags in the seats.]

    Well, the bolster was looking really bad, but with a bit of time and patience it's now fixed and looking loads better! Re-Dying seats is definitely something you can do at home without specialist tools.

      Got to admire you skill and patience for this. Cracking result as well. This has confirmed I really don't have the skill and will need to outsource. Keep up the videos as always a great watch.

      You never know until you try 😀 I think it'll really come in useful on the Crema interior like ours have. I did actually refurb the amplifier housing under the dash as a test first, wish I'd videoed that as it came out really nicely. It's worth getting the dye though, my Daytonas are a bit scuffed on the edges of the bits that stick up, so I can touch those up in the car. Only thing I wish I'd done is send a sample to get the dye matched, which I might do as I can't just use the dye as it's a few shades off and needed blending.

      My Supercar Life hi I have been looking into dying my leather seats but I have one question fully re-dye the seat would the red dye smudge/wear of onto my clothes? Also I would be re-dying a bmw 335i seat that is currently a white/cream colour.

      Do it, it's easy once you get the hang of it. I tried on the amplifier housing under the dash first to get used to how the dye sprays and dries. I'd practice on something like that first, but you'll soon get the hang of it. If I didn't have to use the filler on the seam I don't think you'd have been able to tell that it had been redyed. Hope it goes OK for you.

    I'm dealing with a fairly similar situation in my old Maserati Coupé: the bolstering was repaired, and it looks as though whoever had repaired it ended up coating the ENTIRE SEAT in that lustrous coating that you had pointed out was used on your seat's bolstering. (IDK why they didn't just color-match the bolstering.) I'm in a pickle, because I want to strip this coating off the seats, yet I've been told that-if prepped properly-the seats may have been sanded first, and that they might not look proper without the coating. What to do...?

      Thanks mate, I surprised myself. I was more worried about the stitching to be honest. The thing that shocks me most is how many people do poor jobs on these cars For me it would be a privilege to work on one... which is why I'm going through it bit by bit. Plus I got some more of that ******* plastic out which made it well worth it 😆
      How did your wheel refurb go?

      My Supercar Life it went wheely well (pardon the pun lol) the guys at flatly alloys in Cardiff did a superb job, even after I gave them a bottle of carpro dlux they ceramic coated my wheels inside and out at no extra charge, I cannot fault them, a really good experience from start to finish. It now makes the car look even better as the paint job is perfect again, just like it rolled off the assembly line 👍👍👍

      Nope, you're not getting away with that pun, it was terrible 😜!
      That's really good to hear that you've found someone who takes pride in their work and sounds like they've done a brilliant job. Really happy for you mate.

    I used fiebing's pro dye. Looked absolutely amazing. I first used 99% alcohol, then fiebing's deglazer, then the pro dye, then touch up, then fiebing's resolene. Cleaning and buffing between. Then treated a leather conditioner. Loved the perfect result. I used foam brushes. Left a perfect finish.
    You can strip old paint and dirt very quickly with paint thinner.

    Where has your video on AD Devils Blood staining gone? I've got someone who really needs to see what you had. Seems to have been taken down.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  5 років тому

      Hi. I removed it as I think the message of the video got lost in how annoyed I was with the stains. The videos original intention wasn't aimed at Autobrite, it was aimed at all products that have too much dye in them, and to hopefully stop others having the same problem in the future. The problem was that people thought I was trying to cause 'drama' and 'beef' with Autobrite which wasn't the case.
      I would also receive really negative comments about me personally, or that it was my fault. Others were to do with the car etc. The list goes on. I had many positive comments but it's always the negative ones that I remember.
      I used to dread looking at my phone and getting notifications that someone had commented on the video. It wasn't worth the trouble so I made the decision to take it down and it's one of the best personal decisions I've made. It also made me less interested in uploading to UA-cam, which is still something I'm trying to get over. Sorry for the long explanation!

      @@MySupercarLife fair enough. For me it was very much what I found from coloured snows too, and I had been using these products since the day of their release! I personally used your video a number of times to advise people away from these "fad" foams. There are a lot of fanboys who quite frankly know nothing yet they feel some crazy affiliation to these companies and defend them no matter what.
      Don't let comments determine your content. I noticed your absence, I found your content was mostly very informative and well worth a watch. Hope to see some more stuff soon. 👍🏻

    What an interesting and helpful video! I've never even seen this sort of repair as an option to be honest, but as my car has similar seats I can see it coming in very handy one day.
    Honesty (in the style of Obsessed Garage) is always good too as you didn't nail it on the first go but decided to leave it in the video.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому

      I always think what's the worst that can happen, it's a bit like repairing things and buying specialist tools, you never know when you'll need it. Plus I've learned a new skill along the way.
      Oh yes, it definitely went wrong on the first try! It looked bizarre, but it taught me a lesson. I've not seen Obsessed Garage (I'll have a search), but I sometimes find honesty comes through on these videos and it sort of makes it more credible.
      I'm not an expert but I'll try most things. I think it comes from paying people to do jobs and not been happy with the end result. I'm of the assumption that if you try, and then get a good result you get way more satisfaction.

      Thanks dude I really appreciate the kind words! Time has gotten away from me and many things (mainly cars 😁) have changed - however I've been editing this week and currently uploading some new content. I have found quite a few un-edited videos on my computer so there's plenty of work to do!
      Once again thanks for giving me the motivation to kick the channel back in to life 👍

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  4 роки тому +1

      I want to get back in to it but I never have time, maybe soon I'll start again but every time I get the camera out I just don't feel motivated. Maybe once the world opens again I'll make an effort to upload and show what I've been up to.
      But I'm always here in the comments section 👍

      Thanks mate. I think people would be surprised how long it takes. For example I've been working on this vid for 3 weeks on and off, with a solid week getting the final edit right. It's really nice to read as there is only me running the show! comments like this, it makes me feel like it's worth it, so thanks 😀🖒

    Who masks with electrical tape?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  4 роки тому +2

      It's a very common method in seat repairs. Paper masking tape doesn't follow the contour of the seats as it's not flexible enough and doesn't stick properly. Electrical tape is pliable and sticks to the leather, it's then removable without causing damage to the newly painted section or the original finish.
