You should react to The Good-Ass Game That Reclaimed Its Throne: The Story of Tekken on thescore esports. That'll give you some grounding in the highlights of modern competitive Tekken.
@ChocolateKieran I know you're into Street Fighter, but you have to check out the SF6 finals and Third Strike finals those were sooo entertaining to watch in person
you should react to Arslan's journey, how he showed up out of nowhere in the global tekken scene and dominated everybody. His final matches are intense as hell.
In case you didn't know, that champion Arslan Ash is the best Tekken 7 player in the world, while he did have some trouble adjusting to Tekken 8 at the start of the game but it seems like he's back on the road of being the best at Tekken 8 too
9:40 when he is talking about still getting hit after you already died. I dont really feel any type of way cause a lot of combos require quick inputs before some delayed inputs, so people do the full string just in case a part of the combo gets blocked. I do it too sometimes
The reason for all the poking is that big launchers and Hail Mary type moves are super punishable, and you bet your ass all these guys know the optimal punish. It’s just not worth the risk
14:45 To your question, Dragunov is a rushdown heavy character with big plus frames and his style suits Tekken 8. Against Arslan tho, Atif was finding it hard to open up him up because of his impeccable low and defensive reads and also having a harder time getting his slower big plus frame moves going due to Nina's fast pokes and String. Feng gave more defensive options to Atif to shut down nina's poke pressure, Especially with b1 which is a fast 10f counterhit that gives free shoulder. On top of that Feng has better tracking on his fast pokes than dragunov (b4, d4, df1) and he has a nastier 50/50 mix, especially on Oki (on knockdown). His Feng pick would have actually worked out if he did more optimal punish (missed shoulder punish twice) and better combos, which happens switching characters in high pressure situations.
Just leaving this here: for me, the best ever tekken match with the most hype behind it is: JDCR vs Knee at Rev Major 2017 (not the red bull 2023 one) Backstory is that both of them were like archrivals and at the top of their games; Knee was considered the goat and jdcr closely following, but still the underdog. To this day just crazy game^^
Arslan came into the scene in 2019 and won every single Evo afterwards except for the year in the which Evo was cancelled and in the same year another Evo before which is Evo japan when leory was introduced as the most broken character in fighting game history.
I love the Dragon Ball comparison during Game 1 Round 1, because you're absolutely right, both players at a high level do always poke around each other's defenses before trying to go for big stuff in later games!
@@ChocolateKieran It’s really a non factor in the gameplay lol, you can just simply duck or block the guns on reaction if a Nina just does it, and the lasers you can as well. The reason Nina’s guns were not ducked in these cases is because it was a “punish”, aka the first hit (not the guns) hit first and the opponent is stunned so long that the guns hit. But that functions exactly the same as any other move except it looks more flashy
I totally recommend the story of Arslan Ash the Unknown God of Tekken its an old video about his struggle to reach the EVO tournament in Japan for Tekken 7 at the time but still it's an amazing story
Yes they don't jump in this game because it is very slow and clunky, It has been that way from tekken 3. If you jump you can get punished heavily as the opponent can do there biggest launcher because it takes a lot of frames to recover from that jump. So basically at this level of play you jump you lose the round
@@ChocolateKieran Yes tekken does not recommend jumping, you either low parry lows or block them. Blocking gives the most reward as the opponent is at minus frames depending on the move and you can get a free punish. If the move is -15 or above in frames then it can be launched for huge damage.
@@ChocolateKieran Either way man we appreciate you trying tekken. It is surely a difficult game to get good at but once you get the hang of it, Then you will love it even more.
I am so happy you noticed how they are not getting pushed to the corner too much. The biggest mistake beginner/intermediates make is retreating more than necessary. I see a lot of people backdashing to the moon. It doesn't create any whiffs punishment opportunities and in turn corners you. 1-3 backdashes are often more than enough. Spatial awareness is extremely important. Also, best thing you can do sometimes is step/sidewalk with intermittent blocks to get out of wall situation, especially if the wall behind is interactable.
While I am nowhere near the biggest Tekken fan, one match I would like to suggest is Arslan vs Knee at Combo Breaker 2023 for Tekken 7. Specifically because it had one the hypest moments I've ever seen. Though I will say, after the reset it was kind of a wash but was still a dope ass match between two goats of Tekken.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend you to check out Combo Breaker's 2024 Grand Finals for Tekken 8. It's also Arslan Ash, against a player from the Philippines. It's so far the hypest Grand Finals in Tekken 8 we have.
About frames: For most characters the fastest move they have is the standing and crouching jab (X on XBox, Square on PS) which is 10 frames. exceptions are King (boob slam) and Yoshimitsu (flash) afaik. A single standing jab is +1 for most characters (Asuka is -1) *IF IT'S BLOCKED* which means if both players jabs as soon as the punch and block animation ends, the attacker will be 1 frame quicker and will always win in this scenario. Keep in mind that the jab is a high attack and can be countered by a crouching move. Dragunov's running punch where he hits downward slightly gives him a lot of +frames, generally recommended to block the next move unless you're sure he will use a high or low attack, and you can either use a crouching move or hop kick to beat it. If you get +4 from using a move, then you can use a move with 13 startup frames and always be faster than the opponent, because even if they jab, it will take them 14 frames before it hits. Or you can use a 14 frame launcher to trade with their jab, you take a jab but they get launched and you can combo them if you're quick. In general, the more +frames you get from using a certain move, the slower / stronger move you can use without the opponent being able to challenge it. A majority of moves have -frames though and after using one of those, usually your turn is 'over' and it's time to defend.

6:35 Other fighting games have more jumping because there is a lot more strategic benefit to jump on those games. In a Street Fighter where people try to avoid jumping anyway it still gives you overheads which are rarer (as opposed to Tekken where it's backwards from the usual where most attacks are mids and highs and the lows are rare. Plus you also can't block mids while crouched unlike most fighting games where you can and only overheads open you up) and the jump arcs are huge enough that it can even leave you on the other side of the opponent and maybe even outside of the corner. Nevermind if your character has more movement options up there. In comparison Tekken gives you maybe a way to dodge some lows and a few cool moves that may be unsafe. The risk reward is completely different.
Btw Atif, the one who lost, Obliterated Nobi (Another evo champion) in Losers finals, You should see that too, yes Dragunov is insanely op but Atif is just built different, it was a dragunov vs dragunov mirror match yet it was one sided
