The New Orleans Lakefront Airport is one of the best examples of art deco I've ever seen. One of the fun things to do in New Orleans is to eat brunch at the Terminal Cafe at the airport. You can watch small planes take off & land outside the window wall while eating. I've seen planes land, taxi up and park outside the cafe, come inside and have a meal, and then get back in their plane and takeoff off to somewhere else. The airport flooded during hurricane Katrina and was brought back to its former glory in the aftermath. It's spectacular. I especially like the compass rose in the terracotta floor of the Terminal Bldg that has the distance to the cities at the compass points, including Peking (pre-war). Upstairs are eight murals that that represent each location that the compass points below point to.
Great video. Passed my check ride at Lakefront in 1965. Different culture back in those days. Two of my required solo cross-country flights were in a Cessna 140 taildragger. Never got instrument rated but would go out over Lake Pontchartrain on really clear nights to build confidence in instrument flying.
Yes. It’s next level finding those airports in large cities. Sometimes, even on instruments, you don’t see it until you’re on top of it. Thanks for your comments.
Nice video of your flight into Lakefront at NOLA. I took my private check ride there in 1975. Lived in NOLA and in Slidell just across the lake before moving to Baton Rouge for wife's job in 2014. Lakefront Airport can definitely hide in the haze pretty often.
Flying into Lakefront airport is no joke, its a very busy tower controlled airport very close to MSY. What a beautiful plane you have! One of the cleanest I've ever seen.Your panel is exactly the way I like them. Im old skool, so I love the mix of steam and glass. I personally dont care for all glass on certain types of GA aircraft. I have lots of memories growing up in my Dads avionics shop at Lakefront. Lakefront is a VERY historic airport, and im proud to have learned to fly there.
Thanks for watching and we love your Lakefront airport. I like the mix of steam and glass, too. Somehow it gives me a sense of comfort although I’m aware that not everyone feels that way. Thanks for watching.
New Orleans is known for haze. The localizer and ILS is a chinch, but a predetermined VOR intersection set about a mile from 17 approach lights does the trick also. Coming the other way overland from the west is easier yet. Turn left just past the Chef Menture bridge & canal, and head towards the lake for 35
I think people would be quite surprised how much different things look from above than they might think, and especially how difficult it is to judge the horizontal distance between you and any particular thing on the ground when you're flying.
I had the same snapping sound on my radio and it turned out to be high voltage leakage through the ignition harness. Verify the engine by varying rpm and the crackling will change with rpm .
Your GTN 750 has a visual approach to draw a straight line from 3NM to the runway, so you can line up to the runway without seeing it, my freight company always had us load up the approach for the runway to prevent wrong surface landing.
@@340VolPilot Or set it up for the RNAV (if there is one) and select "Vectors to final". Works as well as the "visual", plus you get a glide slope. I often do it just to get lined up when I am unfamiliar and can't find the runway...
As an IFR pilot I always load an approach, even on a visual, takes the guess work out of it. Or use your OBS/VLOC to draw the final approach course. Just landed 36L there a few weeks ago visual and did that. KNEW is a very nice airport.
I agree. I do that as well. I had the RNAV 36L setup and I was using the heading bug. I don't actually fly a lot of visuals so I think I was just a little sketched-out not actually seeing the airport when I was supposed to be seeing the airport. Yes. It's a great airport. Very helpful staff at the The Big Easy's KNEW.
You need to checkl those magnetos groundings and some has capacitors a filters of static be heard on your radios that not supposed to happen. this is the sparks of the magnetos producing the sparks to the PLUGS you got there a bad GROUNDING iGNITION WIRINGS HAVE IT CHECKED OUT
When I was a kid before they put the flea market in the French Market real farmers sold produce direct from their tractor trailers. But the flea market made more money selling tourist souvenirs, and rent hikes priced farmers out. At 4 years old I sold crushed corn to tourists to feed Jackson Square pigeons. For a dime I got a one pound bag that made 10 ten cent bags. A dollar a day was like $10 today. Not bad money for a 4 year old.

I agree. It is now one of my favorite FBOs. Everything about it is first rate. Sounds like I still need to try the Terminal Cafe.
@@340VolPilot I misspoke, it's the Runway Cafe in the Terminal Bldg.

That's a great airport. True - if you can get out over a large rural area at night it's much the same as instrument.
That's my worst fear flying not being able to find where I should be when flying VFR. You did a great job and that was an interesting runway..
Yes. It is a great runway. You get the sense that you're gliding across the water.
Then always fly IFR
Great video sir! Full of real-world info, thank you! And Geaux Tigers! :)
Thank you very much. Have a great evening.
Just flew my 172 into KNEW last week and I also had some trouble finding it! Great video glad I found you!

It can get very hazy over Lake Pontchartrain, and it's easy to lose the horizon. Good video. Thank you.
Yes, that's what I hear. You're welcome and thanks for watching.
I enjoy the conversation you two have if possible please do that more often
Will do and thanks for watching.
Yes, and your affection and respect for her seems apparent to me

Thanks and we loved the time we spent there. Baton Rouge is great, too.

That's where I did my flight training in the early 1980s. Rode my bicycle from Frenchman, and Maigny twice a week..
That's great. We stayed in the Marigny area while we were visiting.
Very nice. I live here in the NOLA area. My son has taken a few training flights in and out of Lakefront. He agrees, it isn’t easy to see sometimes.
Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.
Thanks for coming! You flew over my house inbound. part of the clutter at 30:06 close to the City Park golf course. Glad you had a good time.
You've got a great city, and, I think we're all guilty of a little clutter here and there.

Thanks Thomas -- All very helpful information. Been back twice since this video and it all went very well. Happy holidays.

That's the truth, and also how much smaller a large commercial aircraft looks when it's two or three miles away.
Enjoyed your video, KNEW is my home airport...hope you enjoyed your time in NOLA!!
Yes, indeed. We had a great time in your city. Can't wait to go back!
landed there once from atlanta pdk, great play to fly to.
Agreed
C-340 is a nice plane.
Thanks and we love it.
This just happened to me in my Arrow at KNEW yesterday. First time here. Took me a lot longer than I expected to find runway 18L!
I don't doubt it but once you finally see it, you can't unsee it. It's like it was right there the whole time.
@@340VolPilot agreed!

Interesting and thanks. I'll give that a try.

Any time.

True. I mostly do RNAV approaches so I probably do need to be more familiar with the visual approach setting.

Visual approach backed up with an ILS
It's just North of the high rise....you can't miss it !!
Got it!
I lived in Mandeville for a while on the north end of that bridge.. a hated driving it every day
I bet that would get old.
Great video 😊
Thank you very much and have a good week.
Posted. Video flying in there a few weeks ago. We found easy enough due to it being on the edge of the lake.
Yes. I agree. I guess my eyes just weren’t cooperating that day.
I enjoy your videos. Own a 1977 340A N518PC. Based in SE Wisconsin. Let me know if you’re up this way.
Thanks Dave. We're planning another trip up your way to Osh Kosh next summer. Maybe then. Y'all sure have some beautiful country up there.

Those were the days.
It seems to me she should sit in the passenger seat to your right just in case you have a medical emergency.
Probably true. She likes to sit back there where things aren’t so busy and there’s not so much radio and avionics “movement.”
silent cockpit business only, no extra commentary.
Thanks for the feedback
