HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! Are you making any of these design mistakes in your home?! 🙋🏼♀️ I know I have!! Make sure you SUBSCRIBE so your don't miss the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! 📣
Thank you for pointing out those hideous lights! We've been in our new home for a year now and I've been asking my husband since day one, "PLEASE, please let's replace those "boob" lights!!" I showed him your video and he has finally agreed, YES! We are replacing them next week! Yay! Finally! Thank you so much for your channel Kristen!
Artwork tip: I wanted an extremely large canvas on a two story wall but, those are SUPER expensive! So I bought a shower curtain that I loved. I built a frame with leftover wood from another project. I used a staple gun and stretched the shower curtain over it. Mounted it on the wall! $30!
My aunt married into a polish family and they introduced her to polish pottery. Polish pottery is basically just nice dishes but instead of all being a set they pick coordinating colors. She has the most beautiful coffee mugs and she has maybe two of each thing tops. They're all blue and patterned but they coordinate instead of being identical. It's just gorgeous and that's how I approach my design style. Its a very second hand furniture friendly approach and you get to layer up and choose designs that resonate with you. All her mugs sit in her hutch on display and you feel so nice having coffee at her house drinking from her beautiful pottery.
FURNITURE AWAY from the WALLS is the best tip you gave. Very few decorators do this. Thank you. I've even seen a queen bed planted in the centre of a bedroom. The head board served as a backside aginst the dresser, which in turn created a dressing area. It was closest to the window so it got good light. And the bed area remained a bit darker. VERY Cool! Personally ALL of my one-room home is decorated / divided up by having all the furnishings are away from the walls and centered down the room's length. You can see lots of wall-to-floor, making the place feel larger and airier. It has flow.
I LOOOOOOVEEEE THE FACT that you always add photos as examples!!! It helps soo so so much ♥️♥️ thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and tips
I know, right? Better suggestion would be to buy art from local artists. And if it's still expensive there are always prints. A lot of those artists sell their prints too and that's always a cheaper version. And if that's still expensive....if you want something for 1$...well...thrift it. Fuck Ikea.
Such helpful tips that make sense and are super doable! My favorite was splitting up matching sets of furniture throughout the house! Doesn’t cost a thing and made a HUGE difference in aesthetic🥰
You have great taste, and are definitely correct! We purposely wanted our brand new house to look like we renovated an older home, so we did exposed cabinet hinges, and white appliances. It looks stunning, but it was done intentionally, which is the difference.
I disagree with the indoor lights. I think they can set a gorgeous ambiance for a bedroom or a reading nook. I'm an interior designer and think that they can look amazing when used in the right settings. I have some hanging over a white curtain in the bedroom, with a lovely tree in front and a Turkish rug. Looks amazing. So go for the lights guys xo
Maybe suggest people buying original art instead of “unique” pieces from other big box stores. There are a lot of affordable art pieces in smaller cities, if you just look for them. 😇
This is what I thought. Agree with this mass ware/ Shopping mal chique. So tacky. Rather buy from young artists or frame peace of wallpaper or blow up a cool foto as a poster on canvas
Please don’t run wiring behind your drywall without first encasing them in conduit. The wires get hot and start a fire. This is an inspection snaflu that might cause your home not to pass inspection. The same goes for running electrical lines under carpeting... big no no!
Wires need to be in conduit, period. I don’t do it myself, I hire licensed & insured electricians. No house will pass inspection with wires dangling behind the drywall. Get it done right or don’t do it!
@@amymcginty6634 I wasnt talking about dangling wires behind the drywall...my accent was on the HEATING of wires. Do it with right awg and that's it. But conduit is good for multiple OTHER reasons, not as only as like fireproofing the wires.
I didn't put much stock into rugs till I moved into a place that is partially furnished. There was a rug in the livingroom and I'd never had a rug before. The first time my foster cat spilled coffee on it I threw it out on the back deck with the intention of washing it. It wasn't till it had been out there for two weeks that I realized why my space felt off. I was used to not having rugs before, but now that I'd experienced a good rug in the right place I couldn't feel right about the bare floor. I washed it and brought it back in and yes, they do tie a space together.
I'm binge watching all your videos on this topic and they're SO helpful, I'm definitely guilty of doing a lot of these without even realizing and it's such a difference to see photos without them!
I've found that a home looks warm & welcoming when you're using furniture and accessories that have been accumulated over time. Definitely stay away from the matching sets.
Finally grew up and could afford a nice 5 piece set. Now you tell me not to have it. What can I do to make it work out? Don’t say paint my dark wood. It’s in great shape and I like it.
I’ve noticed this too. I used to want brand new everything and all matching but it just has no personality when you do that. Accumulated furniture really helps it feel welcoming
Anne K. YES!!! BUILD UR PUZZLE....ONE PC AT A TIME! LET "YOUR OWN" PERSONALITY SHINE THRU! BE ECLECTIC! BE "The Artist You ARE!!" DON'T COPY SOMEONE ELSE! BE ORIGINAL!!
Love your videos. I do have some fairy lights about. I'm gonna keep them. It truly brightened our home through the dark winter and through being homebound during pandemic. It adds a bit of hygga
Careful I was doing lights all year round for a few years ... Yes, they look wonderful... But something made me before I saw this, turn them all off Funny thing as I took them down the outside of lights crumbled in my hands...was it too hot in my south facing window or Did the Spirits protect me from burning down my 🏡... Thank God...I've now thrown them away...nothing was wrong with the wires just the plastic around them crumbles...go figure ???? .. W
First time I’ve seen that word other than the book my son gave me all about hygga. 😊 Maybe keep your fairy lights but have them in a glass vessel and only turn them on when you will be in that room for the evening?
My apartment is pre-boob light. lol. Those matching furniture sets seem to be the goal in my neighborhood...same as the 'artwork'...screams Rent A Center! Agree with all but twinkle lights. It's a long dark winter here, and having white Xmas lights in the windows gives me just a little life. Lamps never seem to do that for me. Their light always seems so 'task oriented'. Light coming from the windows is a big 'yes'.
Why? Most people want a home that looks nice, cohesive, and thought out. If you don't give two shits what your house looks like, why are you watching interior design?
Hey Kristen! Can you please do a video about how to choose paint colours that match different types of flooring? I.e. light oak, light brown, grey flooring etc
keep your color tones together. For example, the color gray, there are many tones of gray, grayish green, grayish tan, grayish blue, so stay with blue or cooler tones if your floor is cool or has blue tones, wooden floors if light will also go cool or warm, warm having a reddish or warm pinkish tone in it. look at a color wheel, all colors can lean warm or to the cool side. light colors open a space, dark closes in, some pinks are on the orange side, some on the purple side. Try doing a color quiz on colors you like, Keep contrast in mind.
Use basic color theory concepts to decorate your home and choose colors you love. Also be sure to choose something that makes it easy to tie main areas together and make them have a sense of flow. We just moved into an old farmhouse we bought a few weeks ago. My entry way is red, which opens into the living room, which is an orange colorwash that resembles the morning sunrise, which opens to a hallway and the dining room. The hallway is golden castle by valspar, while I'm planning to do a 2 tone paint in a light yellow with a dark gold using a double paint roller. All areas have a creamy yellow ceiling which compliments the walls and the open door frames between them are the same color. All warm colors but really help make it cheerful and warm. If you haven't guessed, fall is my favorite season and I chose my colors based on that. I have no idea how we'll be doing the kitchen just yet. For spaces like your bedroom, you want cool and relaxing colors that encourage you to relax and sleep. We went with turquoise and dark purple for this. Take your time looking at colors and think about what will make you love the space you have. Also, lighter or brighter colors work best in smaller spaces to make them feel more open. Hope this helps.
Yikes! I do have a "boob" light fixture in my entryway! Am I the only one who has never heard it called that before? I'm going to think of that everytime I look at it now lol. At least until I change it out. 😁
"Boob lights"... I was dying! Lol. I wasnt watching the video and when she said that I looked... sure enough, those are our lights and... sure enough, they do look like boobs! Now Im just going to walk down my hall LAUGHING!
I agree with most of this except tapestries and fairy/twinkle lights. I think the right tapestry can pull a room together and fairy lights can be very warm and cozy at night just get ones that look good even when they're off
I've heard so many designers saying don't buy matching sets, but it always looks cheaper when it doesn't matches to me lol Idk what it is, because the rest of the examples made sense, and the pictures examples looked great, but the matching ones always looked so much better to me than furniture that doesn't match.
I have matching living room furniture. Our main living space is completely open, so we went with very neutral, matching furniture because I felt it looked better.
Growing up, my mom had mismatc furniture because it was given or bought from here and there. Now that I'm an adult and can afford funiture I love that my sectional matches the swivel chair.
I have a question for you, how do you pick out non-matching bedroom furniture pieces but that still work together so it doesn't look like you are a university kid with a mosh posh of random pieces? I get that you can change out some of the pieces with a similar wood tone, but how do you compliment the actual piece style/era? Would love to see a video on how to do this. The most obvious thing to do is to change out the mirror above the dresser. Help!
Start with one neutral piece. I did this in my small living room. I bought an off-white/tan love seat with square legs. I also bought two gray chairs at a different store. I bought square legs (for the chairs that had round legs) at Home Depot to match the style of the sofa. Finally I bought a rug, pillows and art in blue/gray tones that goes well with all the chairs/sofa.
I’m guilty of buying matching sets, I love to match even with my clothes. However I’m starting to love the mix and match vibe too it’s all about adaptability.
Wonderful that you give suggestions in case the rug is too small! Another one is to hang a small rug as a wall hanging! Not everyone is going out to buy new rugs. Some things are inherited or have significance even though they may not be perfect. Anchoring with a layered rug look is an awesome solution! Thanks for the positivity - not just trashing people’s design choices.
No boob lights, no. IKEA furniture, no matched furniture, original artwork, furniture off the walls, furniture all on the rug, shoes hidden in bench, no tapestries or twinkle light. Damn, I’m doing better than I thought!
The only problem is if you place all your furnature on the rug, when you view it from walking in the room, it looks like your area rug is a boat and everything lives on your floating boat in the room, by pulling some pieces slightly off onto the wood floor, you are now activating the space on the floor around the rug to include it in the look not isolate it as a blank sea around the boat. Match if you go for symetry which is a very formal balanced look, then its ok. Do your taste. Mixing found objects makes for great conversation about the space. :)
Yes I DO have some of these mistakes. I am getting rid of alot of things I DID like but now am tired of. Kristen's video will help put me on the right path. I HOPE!! I need it!!
I think the whole point of the video is to help people who love home design and like it to look quality. It’s not about trying to look like something we aren’t over being happy. This comment missed the point.
Too many interior designers don’t center the living room around TV viewing. It’s what most people do in there. No one wants their TV way up above a fireplace, opposite a window or tucked in a cabinet.
Facts. I think a lot of wealthier people have the luxury of additional rooms that can accommodate some of the everyday living (like watching TV), so their living room can be more of a showpiece.
Who wants a TV in the living room? For me that's always been the conversation spot with family and guests. The TV is in the basement rec room area. And we only have one ... because we have lives and aren't attached to our TV.
We got rid of our TV in 2006. I felt much less stressed. We don't miss it at all. What if=you didn't have a TV? Just try the idea on for size, you might be surprised you can be present with family and friends, read a book, listen to music, so many options.
I think these are great tips for staging a house to sell, or if you have a more modern style. But (for example) boho style uses a lot of texture, pattern, and fabric. If you have that style and a space calls for it, use a tapestry. That's literally part of the style. Not doing so in some cases results in the 'alternative' room she showed which did not look boho. It looked modern with some boho like wall art. Otherwise, great tips!
I paused at 6:44 and spent the rest of the day moving the couch around the living room...on paper looks good...in reality...a nightmare. Back to the wall.
For practical reasons 'cause we have four dogs, we replaced the rug with different tile designs in the center of the living room from the rest of the floor so it gives an illusion that there's a rug at the center
Hi Kristen! Great tips and information! What I love most and emphasize to my clients is to try out new things! Be bold, creative and style your home to best suit your personality. I think swapping out old and jaded products and materials is an easy process because there are so many endless possibilities when it comes to finding new and contemporary furniture, lighting, etc. Keep up the great work!❤️
Guilty of: matching living room set and bedroom 3 piece set and cords hanging behind the tv stand. 😬😬😬 Great video! thanks for all ideas and showing actually how everything should look “options” my fav is how to transform the living room space with different pieces from different stores, that was a game changer for me I love the different colors mix n match.
Hi Kristen! I love your videos. I know your style is towards hi-end, and what I'd like to suggest may not be very practical for you. It would be great if in the long term you would consider sustainability in your videos. Even maybe just mentioning a thrift store to include with the amazon, Home Depot, Wayfair suggestion like for the light fixture. I think it would a great positive ripple. Or maybe if any of your sponsors/partners have sustainable features, I'd love to hear about them. I'm saying all this because I genuinely love your videos, and because we've decided in our household to consider the sustainability of any product we buy.
I bought a fabulous metal light at a thrift store years ago and ended up using it over the front porch of my next house. They wanted $2 but I gave them $20 because it was so cool. My husband is Thai and likes things with a lot of detail, it made him very happy to find something Thai like.
Hi Kristen, I almost clicked over your video but then was drawn in by your ideas. Ive fallen into the Ikea trap and as much as I like their products I now totally get your point about mixing it up. Well one, you truly know your stuff. I feel inspired.
Thanks for showing us the way Kristen! We are certainly guilty of matching bedroom furniture but you didn't share any photos of bedrooms that have unique pieces. Should we have everything mismatched? Cheers, Tiina
No “boob” lights in Europe 🙂 Also, a huge eyesore is the TV being on all the time. And clutter. It helps to take a picture of your space. You then see things that you overlook in real life. For me that is the thing I like to ask myself “if I were to take a picture now, what would I not want to be visible?” I also always feel that the house is more put together with nice background music and a nice smelll. I try to give my home an air b&b vibe, only essentials and comfort, it is easy to maintain too 🙂
Thanks for the advice! I think you said all those things that are usually everyone’s mistakes but the best part was the way you talk, there was nothing offensive and you use the right words to describe them 👏🏼👏🏼 Guilty of a couple of them lol I’m glad I found you.
You are so charming and calming and very respectful. I like that you are not just a vintage shopper and you help us to use all kinds of things... like to say thank you!👧
So I agree with you on so many of the items that you covered 😍❣️ 1) I agree on and have been telling people as a designer and decorator for over 20 years are the boob lights they have never been anything but a designer or decorator's nightmare 🤭 I started very young, but the boob lights were not popular or considered high-end in the '90s at all 😉❣️❣️ The only one that I would have agreed with you on is the IKEA furniture and having too much of it in one space, But with the extension of different and unique pieces that IKEA has come out with in the last two years and definitely now I believe that younger people or older that don't have a lot of money can get a worldly unique design within their home or their rooms by buying pieces for IKEA, but the difference is buying them from the different collections that they have now. And sometimes if you want a nice curated looking home and you don't have any money or a lot of money that is one of the only ways to be able to afford that much furniture that can now look like it's been bought uniquely over time 🤔 And that's just food for thought, Love what you do keep doing it 😍❣️❣️❣️❣️
The subtext here is “be ashamed of your space, you’re not quite good enough yet so you need to go shopping”. Need a vid about making the best use of floor space. Cheers.
Hi Kristen. Very new here but absolutely loved your video and learned so much! When talking about boob lights ( we don’t have them so much here in the UK) but you showed pictures displayed on a shelf and I have 5 prints that I was struggling to configure but now I know hat I am going to do. My husband will make me a ledge shelf to display them and when we get bored we will just change the prints. Thanks to you. X
Well, my guilty home decor pleasures are tapestries, twinkle lights and wallpaper. I like a good wallpapered accent wall. Also, mirrors open up a space too. Boob lights don't give off good light either.
You are adorable and so easy to listen to. You are a terrific speaker who doesn’t use a lot of annoying filler words. You also edit in the perfect amount of photos. Keep up the great work.
I love buying furniture from IKEA especially when you have a small place and need to maximise the storage they are the best! I like buying for the same room different pieces of different styles and with the decor creates really a warm place. I understand when you say not to buy too many pieces in the same room from IKEA but in terms of functionality, storage and versatility they are the best to me. Thank you for your video really helpful!
Me too. I just love IKEA. The furniture from other brands and companies seems too complicated and too fancy for me. IKEA furniture is simple yet beautiful and practical.
Interesting about the matching furniture! I love the different ottoman idea! I'm going to have to try that to add a pop of color when our matching one wears out
Look up the basics of putting new upholstery on an ottoman and you won't need to wait for your current one to die. A huge bonus is you pick a fabric you love.
I totally agree with the fairy lights indoors - those need to be outdoors, or only used indoors during the holidays. For loose tapestry pieces that are special to you, framing them is a popular way to bring about some of that boho inspired look. We do that a lot with handcrafted pieces from India, and they’re always making a bigger statement when framed and hung on the wall! Thanks for this unique share Kristen!
FRAME a dramatic tapestry, batik or fabric that you love. Stretch the fabric over the plain edge of the frame. put a frame on the outside of your piece. A 4'x6' Kenyan batik set the color palette for our open space living area!
I just getting all furniture from local Face Book market place .So many times you can find perfect items for fraction of price comparing what people paid for it .
Can you please do a video on how decorate a long wall across living and dining space? I am stuck with how to decorate the same wall but still create the sense of two separate spaces and not make it look cluttered!
If you have some armchairs or accent chairs, you might want to try the L-shaped furniture placement. Kristen featured this trick on an old video: ua-cam.com/video/wV_o64RkAlw/v-deo.html
Tapestries are the hill I will die on for my creative space. The rest of the home can look more modernly "aesthetic" but being able to switch out the vibe with a tapestry is a must for me at least in one designated room of the house. (And it's good for a little extra sound absorption)
I agree! I love tapestry! I think it’s wonderful for guest rooms! Gives a fun flair like an Airbnb. Just my opinion. I will it not get rid of tapestry 🤓
I like this video better..you talked a little slower than the previous one I watched..which I couldn’t get what you were talking about.. keeping it simple will help keep you from rushing to get it all in the video..you’re such a sweet and smart designer..I want to learn from your videos..thank you for sharing ❤️
I have what you call ‘boob’ lights in a couple of rooms. We switched them a few years ago and took down the builder grade square glass ones. A big improvement! To me they just provide light...to each her own. ☺️
I just added two boob lights in my house. One in the hallway and one by at a pantry door. It’s not the primary source of light there. The walls actually drop down in both of those areas, so they aren’t even visible right away. They work fine for those spaces.
Yeah they ARE the improvement. Those other ones look outdated to me lol The replacement ones 😂 - & they let in dust and flies, have to be cleaned often… no thx
I have boob lights in all 3 bedrooms, but I just haven't decided yet what I want in their place. When on a budget, it's hard to justify spending money on something that works just fine. I also have an IKEA Hemnes dresser, but it's the dark color and doesn't work with my decor anymore. I love how sturdy it is and how much storage it has, so I plan on refinishing it.
When we moved to our 3rd house, we only brought our daughter's bedroom set. I bought the entire set from a good friend; it was her childhood bedroom set. We don't have as much since we went minimal so were able to separate the pieces & re-vamp them into separate rooms for all the kids. Our daughter has the bed & headboard & 1 night stand painted white. Our middle son has the 5-drawer armoire in the closet & the youngest has the dresser & the other nightstand painted a blue gray. They do not look like the same set since the paint makes them look totally different. They got to pick the color & they are happy.
I hung a specially made quilt that I made for my headboard with a Amish made quilt rack with a shelf that matches my two matching night stands and at end of my bed I have yes a matching Amish made blanket chest. I love it and I always have special quilts on my bed . Which I make as I am a quilter and machine embroider. Thank you for your tips !
I've got one boob light -- in my bedroom, no less. I rent as well, so it's there to stay. The good thing about the mismatched furniture -- I could never afford the whole set, anyway!
Lights are actually pretty easy to switch in and out so if you want to switch it out for the period of living there and then put the boob light back up once you leave, that’s an option
LOL!!! At the moon lights....yes, my hubby and I are new home owners and these lights are everywhere! We are slowly changing them out to more modern pieces from Arhaus.
Great video, Kristin. I am guilty of having a four-level shoe rack with 16 pairs of shoes on it. I'm definitely going to find a better solution after watching this.
Loved your suggestion about ceiling lights, I just painted mine but I think they would look better replaced with an updated light. Love all your suggestions!
When we first moved into our home it was the first time I had a chance to truly spend the time to buy furniture I love vs finding whatever random hodge-podge thing I could afford. So the big mistake that I made was buying "matchy-matchy" items. I was so focused on having things that matched because I always had so much random stuff that didn't go, that I overdid it. That being said I have mixed in quite a few things and have used tips from your channel to help elevate my space and I think its helped create a cozy comfortable home!
Definitely would like to change out the boob light in our hallway, IF I can get my husband on board.😂 I think furniture placement is one of the biggest improvements people can make for free. Nothing worse than a room with all the furniture up against the walls in a large space or the tiny rug. Pinterest & Instagram have tons of inspiration pics! I enjoyed your video!
I love the suggestion of splitting up matching bedroom sets you already own.. I never thought of taking a dresser from one room and switch it with dresser from the 2nd or 3rd bedroom…great!
I watch my granddaughters daily and they have a room with a bed and crib plus toys. When the youngest moves into a bed and the crib comes out, granted it will be a couple of years, I plan on moving my tall dresser into their room from my room. This will open up my small room tremendously.

Recap:
1. No boob lights.
2. Exposed cords.
3. Too much IKEA furniture
4. Matching furniture sets. Mix!
5. Common wall art from Ikea/Home Sense
6. Furniture placement.
7. Correct size rug.
8. Messy shoe rack
9. Tapestries or twinkle lights
So useful Thank you so much
I have all of these (or have recently had them) except for the matching furniture set, and I am, in fact, poor, so this list checks out 🤣

I've found that a home looks warm & welcoming when you're using furniture and accessories that have been accumulated over time. Definitely stay away from the matching sets.
Agreed
Finally grew up and could afford a nice 5 piece set. Now you tell me not to have it. What can I do to make it work out? Don’t say paint my dark wood. It’s in great shape and I like it.
I’ve noticed this too. I used to want brand new everything and all matching but it just has no personality when you do that. Accumulated furniture really helps it feel welcoming

Love your videos. I do have some fairy lights about. I'm gonna keep them. It truly brightened our home through the dark winter and through being homebound during pandemic. It adds a bit of hygga
Agreed!!
Careful I was doing lights all year round for a few years ... Yes, they look wonderful... But something made me before I saw this, turn them all off
Funny thing as I took them down the outside of lights crumbled in my hands...was it too hot in my south facing window or Did the Spirits protect me from burning down my 🏡... Thank God...I've now thrown them away...nothing was wrong with the wires just the plastic around them crumbles...go figure ????
.. W
Ohhhhh good to know.
First time I’ve seen that word other than the book my son gave me all about hygga. 😊 Maybe keep your fairy lights but have them in a glass vessel and only turn them on when you will be in that room for the evening?
@@martymaloney1032 oh gotcha. That's a wonderful idea ☺️
The tips on rug size/placement was amazing. Thank you
My apartment is pre-boob light.
We should *really quickly* go away from the thought, your home (and stuff) needs to look (or be for that matter) expensive, high end, or whatever.
You should really quickly find a new source of entertainment.

Thank you! 👍
Why? Most people want a home that looks nice, cohesive, and thought out. If you don't give two shits what your house looks like, why are you watching interior design?
How pretentious.
Hey Kristen!
Can you please do a video about how to choose paint colours that match different types of flooring? I.e. light oak, light brown, grey flooring etc
And on that note what colour of furniture matches certain types of flooring? For example, light oak flooring?
keep your color tones together. Try doing a color quiz on colors you like, Keep contrast in mind.

interior design
Cherry wood flooring too!
Yikes! I do have a "boob" light fixture in my entryway! Am I the only one who has never heard it called that before? I'm going to think of that everytime I look at it now lol. At least until I change it out. 😁
Same, never heard them called that before. I have two small ones in my hallway. I actually like them but will change them out now lol
I just recently heard that term, but I still never really hated the look of them. Who knows...a few years from now, they may be all the rage! 😉
@@arladeleon3806 if u like them don’t change it, this is only her opinion. But that name though...🤣
"Boob lights"... I was dying! Lol. I wasnt watching the video and when she said that I looked... sure enough, those are our lights and... sure enough, they do look like boobs! Now Im just going to walk down my hall LAUGHING!

Who has 60 pairs of shoes?!?
I have a total of 6 pairs and that’s all that’s needed.
@@jenntip I definitely do...over 100 pair actually
@@misspookie84 No way!! You must be a collector. You’re on your way to be the next Imelda Marcos!! 😉

Framing the tapestry in order to keep it is also a really good option.
Indeed..Also one can be creative with the frame. Not the usual square or rectangle..
I’m so happy you shared this because I have matching pieces ordered! This will be the first time I have a matching set in my adult life!
My sets have to match. It drives me crazy if it doesnt.
Matching sets are great. You can always boost them with different throw pillows.
Growing up, my mom had mismatc furniture because it was given or bought from here and there. Now that I'm an adult and can afford funiture I love that my sectional matches the swivel chair.
Wonderful, useful information. As a retired Interior Designer, many of these issues were very sensitive to state to a customer. Great job!
For ppl who like tapestries: get old needlepoint ones! They look much more expensive & actually absorb sound
I love my matching bedroom sets. They are beautiful.
RUGS BELONG ON THE FLOOR! CARPETS CAN BE SHOWCASED ON A WALL ..IF NOT TOO LARGE!
I am so glad I found your channel. I love how clear you present your ideas- you are so easy to listen to!
No boob lights, no. IKEA furniture, no matched furniture, original artwork, furniture off the walls, furniture all on the rug, shoes hidden in bench, no tapestries or twinkle light. Damn, I’m doing better than I thought!
Yes, I called them the boob light too! Finally getting rid of mine
@@dilmaa4723 lol I never heard that term. So funny. I’ve never had them.
You go Susan!
Me too.
Yes I DO have some of these mistakes. I am getting rid of alot of things I DID like but now am tired of. Kristen's video will help put me on the right path. I HOPE!! I need it!!
I wonder how many design philosophies we have that are centred around striving to look rich rather than be happy?
My thoughts exactly! I get the sense her style is somewhere between “prole drift chic” and “McMansion foreclosure”.
agree
I think the whole point of the video is to help people who love home design and like it to look quality. It’s not about trying to look like something we aren’t over being happy. This comment missed the point.
If something makes you miserable looking at it, how can you be happy? 🤣🤣
So, update and that brings happiness!
I don’t think Boob lights makes anyone 😊 😅
Too many interior designers don’t center the living room around TV viewing.
It’s what most people do in there. No one wants their TV way up above a fireplace, opposite a window or tucked in a cabinet.
Facts. I think a lot of wealthier people have the luxury of additional rooms that can accommodate some of the everyday living (like watching TV), so their living room can be more of a showpiece.
Exactly. In my 100m2 flat I have a living room/dining room/kids corner. I have to center the sofa to the TV. THERES NO OTHER FREAKING SPOT.
So true. But hard for owners of old houses.
I would wrap the tapestry around a simple wooden frame made of 1x1” wood so it looks more planned.
@@martymaloney1032 planned =/= boho
Contemporary boho is a thing...
I actually agree. Bohemian doesn't need to look expensive, just warm, relaxed and welcoming... other than that, I loved the video.
I paused at 6:44 and spent the rest of the day moving the couch around the living room...on paper looks good...in reality...a nightmare. Back to the wall.
What about it was not working in RL?
😂😂😂😂
Let us help you!
I agree! Hard in a small living room 😐
lol
For practical reasons 'cause we have four dogs, we replaced the rug with different tile designs in the center of the living room from the rest of the floor so it gives an illusion that there's a rug at the center
Always twinkle lights !!! Everywhere ! I love them. They give of a fairytale vibe. Nice video !
Great video! thanks for all ideas and showing actually how everything should look “options” my fav is how to transform the living room space with different pieces from different stores, that was a game changer for me I love the different colors mix n match.
Of course!! Check out my latest thrift shopping video sharing all my tips for finding the best thrifted pieces! Sustainability & great prices!

I bought a fabulous metal light at a thrift store years ago and ended up using it over the front porch of my next house. They wanted $2 but I gave them $20 because it was so cool. My husband is Thai and likes things with a lot of detail, it made him very happy to find something Thai like.
I agree with everything but the twinkly lights! Those always bring a cozy vibe
This was a great video. No fluff all nuts and bolts. Great ideas.
No “boob” lights in Europe 🙂
Also, a huge eyesore is the TV being on all the time. And clutter. It helps to take a picture of your space. You then see things that you overlook in real life. For me that is the thing I like to ask myself “if I were to take a picture now, what would I not want to be visible?” I also always feel that the house is more put together with nice background music and a nice smelll. I try to give my home an air b&b vibe, only essentials and comfort, it is easy to maintain too 🙂
No tv? 😒 No Air Bnb vibe...
Thanks for the advice! I think you said all those things that are usually everyone’s mistakes but the best part was the way you talk, there was nothing offensive and you use the right words to describe them 👏🏼👏🏼 Guilty of a couple of them lol
I’m glad I found you.
Cheers.
Agreed!
A remedy.. You're heal good morning
I loved the idea of layering a much loved rug. Mine is too small for the space, but it makes me happy.
This is such a great video! Could you do a video on ideas for lighting instad of the string lights to transition to a more adult space?
You are adorable and so easy to listen to. You are a terrific speaker who doesn’t use a lot of annoying filler words. You also edit in the perfect amount of photos. Keep up the great work.
Girl, you give me hope that my new space will be beautiful. Thank you for your tips and examples.
I agree. Decorate with art that is meaningful.
I am super excited for the kris and chris vlog sooooo much!!!!
It’s always great that the budget is reasonable. Great to come home from work in a cozy clean house.❤
We just bought a gorgeous dining room table from IKEA and was about to go ape on some additional pieces there, so glad I watched this video first !!!!
I agreee!!!
It's very easy to turn them into curtains. Pull them shut to show off your cool tapestry, open them to fool the tapestry snobs.
Agree. Plus when you rent you can’t change the walls so the tapestry makes up for paint and wallpaper or unique wall decor.
I agree! I love tapestry! I think it’s wonderful for guest rooms! Gives a fun flair like an Airbnb. Just my opinion. I will it not get rid of tapestry 🤓
i feel the exact same way! I definitely need my tapestries in my creative spaces
Guilty as charged for having the hideous lights BUT they are on my list for swapping out this year 😁
Same
Karen.. Good morning how are you
I have boob lights in all 3 bedrooms, but I just haven't decided yet what I want in their place.
When I become an electrician I will switch out boob lights as I HAVE to rent so.......
Sis you just described my whole house as the list was going on I’m sitting here looking around going 😩 but thanks for the tips 👍🏽
that was a good chuckle, lol..... well for me, I love the tips but it's so hard to afford even one small change.....

I liked your advice. I am redoing things and needed some help. Perfect timing. Thanks Kristen
Do we ALL have to look “high end” or follow trends? Why is this good advice?!
All these tips makes sense and im happy i havent done any of the ”mistakes” in my home 😌
Some of my best artwork pieces have come from thrift stores or second hand. I'm always getting compliments on them and I paid 1/10th of the cost.
I love coming home and find all the shoes lying around the hall lol
LOL!!! At the moon lights....yes, my hubby and I are new home owners and these lights are everywhere! We are slowly changing them out to more modern pieces from Arhaus.
Rugs are dust magnets though...just my 2 cents. Optics wise, yeah they look cool.
They’re also unhealthy for your lungs.
I'm guilty of multiple mistakes. I love my things but I will make some small changes.
So the big mistake that I made was buying
"matchy-matchy" items. I was so focused on having things that matched because I always had so much random stuff that didn't go, that I overdid it. That being said I have mixed in quite a few things and have used tips from your channel to help elevate my space and I think its helped create a cozy comfortable home!
I actually don’t have any boob lights in my home. I do, however, have a messy shoe rack😀

I love how you speak so gently trying not to offend 😂 love your channel!
Currently replacing the ‘boob’ lights! Wayfair for the win!!
We replaced about 12 boob lights with flat LED can-look lights. Immediate upgrade!!!
Happy Sunday I think all of the ideas are great. This is good to know. Thank you for sharing
So helpful thank you! I am not a visual person and i can never figure out what exactly is bothering me in my space. This was really great
Definitely would like to change out the boob light in our hallway, IF I can get my husband on board.😂 I think furniture placement is one of the biggest improvements people can make for free. Nothing worse than a room with all the furniture up against the walls in a large space or the tiny rug. Pinterest & Instagram have tons of inspiration pics! I enjoyed your video!
All the arts that I have are original from my mom .
Enjoyed watching! Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely ,design by you what you like you put in to feel most comfortable.
