You inspire me Jan. Thanks so much for the important information you shared about copyright etc. Being relatively new to the cross stitch world, this is excellent for me to know. As always, watching you here from South Africa is an absolute joy and I look forward for each video as I am learning so much. God bless.
Thank you so much for the copyright info, Jan. It's a very important issue and I will definitely keep an eye out from now on when I purchase PDFs. Someone on my local Facebook cross stitching group posted a question about a copyright issue, and I was very disappointed that the group admins shut down the conversation immediately. I feel like we should be supporting the designers/artists whenever we can.
@@JanHicksCreates A group member asked if it was okay to, and if anyone wanted to, share/photocopy patterns. Two people replied that they believed that was copyright infringement, and the poster said thanks for the info, no problem. Shortly after, one of the group admins posted a "rule" that she would not permit group members to police copyright and that everyone has their own interpretation of copyright laws. I'm conflicted about remaining in the group as I believe it's an important issue.
Yeah, if I were there, I would leave. The only correct interpretation of copyright is the law’s interpretation, and they obviously don’t care about that.
Jan you are the best! Your presentation on licensed artwork was very informative. Thank you for taking the time to do that. I’m sorry Mike had to deal with someone stealing his books. It astounds me that people can go that low. Your videos always make me smile from the beautiful music to your gorgeous stitching and all of the other goodies. Thank you! Kim ♥️♥️
Thank you so much for the fun store tour. Looking forward so much to being able to shop in an actual brick and mortar store again :) Great info on the copyright issues and what we can do to protect the artist work. They definitely deserve their credit for their hard work.
Dear Jan - Thanks for the copyright information. I have been collecting the Disney and Thomas Kincaid Studios for years. I have purchased my kits from Hobby Lobby,Joann and I believe Herrchners I have also purchased kits at the parks when I was an employee. These kits were made by mcgtextiles in Lake Elsinore ,CA, who I believe are no longer producing them. Some of my kits are on 16ct aida, but the last kit I purchased at Downtown Disney years ago was Fantastica and it was on 28 ct 100% cotton evenweave. I love these kits and wish they would produce more as I missed out on some, especially Tangled which seemed to be hard to find, but I will not purchase one unless I know its legitimate, so sadly I haven't bought one in years.
Hi Jan. So glad you covered copyright today. Pinterest is a problem with this and even have some whole cross stitch magazines that are downloadable. The project bag Lynn sent you is beautiful.
Jan thank you so much for sharing you time, talent, and works in progress. You truly are an inspiration. I just started back cross stitching and enjoy watching your flosstubes.
Hey Jan. I have been watching you for a while and admire your color palates. Thanks for show the Tinsmith's Wife visit. I also live in TX and can't wait to visit the shop. I love Quakers and you inspire me Jan.
Jan, I intend to tell you often how much I love the beautiful music. I have always loved piano and have played 50 years but I can tell this is someone who has a passion. It is just beautiful.
Your copyright discussion was so informative and interesting. It was great to see how to check for licensing and artist credit. Have a great week. Blessings and take care.
Hi Jan, the pillows you finished are so beautiful, I just love all those designs. I really enjoyed the segment wherein you discussed copyright issues, that’s such valuable information. You inspire me Jan. I love quakers. I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL. Thank you for another great video!
I'm so glad you did the section about licensing and how to be aware of it. I do have to be careful these days with how I spend money and this is something I worry about. So thank you for sharing things for us to look for. I want the money I can spend to go to the people who have earned it. I love Quakers so much, and that is going to be where my next bit is spent. So thank you so much Jan you really are a dear. Be well.
We are so lucky to have the Tinsmith’s Wife in Texas. Wendy and her parents make shopping such a delight. We visit often. Can’t wait to get back there soon. We consider it a slice of heaven.
I plan on doing the Serendipty Stitch along...And you inspire me Jan... Love all of your pillow finishes... The Tinsmith's Wife looks like a wonderful shop..thank you for sharing.
Hi Jan! Loving your Hoity Toity. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on things to look for regarding copyright. I know how Betsy and Mark have struggled with this copyright issue and how they have had to let some of their customers down because they could not track down the artist to get permission to make paintings, etc. into cross stitch patterns as well as how this claim that they do not have permission from the artist is bothering them currently, and am so disgusted by the person who is levelling the claim against them and the other shops. You do inspire me Jan every time you do a floss tube and share part of your life with us. That bag is absolutely gorgeous but, then again, it is of a beautiful cat so who wouldn't find it gorgeous! I hope you and Mike have a great week, and happy stitching!
I didn’t know that Betsy and Mark were the ones who were dealing with the false accusations. That is sad, especially since every single one of their charts says that they are done with permission from the artist. There are so many unscrupulous ones who are getting away with it. So frustrating. I’m glad I shared their shop, then, to help bolster their business. Thanks for sharing this with me, Dawn.
Enjoyed today’s session. You inspire me Jan! The visit to the shop was lovely and I appreciated the cross stitch copyright information. I like being an informed shopper!
I enjoyed your video tour of the Tinsmith's Wife. My local (~50minute drive) needlework shop is Stitches in Time in Michigan. On my last visit, I saw a beautiful quaker on the wall. I of course purchased the pattern and some fabric to start it right away. Your year of GST 2021 has inspired me to make some progress on some older pieces I've been working on. And thank you for the copyright part of the video, it is helpful to know what to look out for when shopping online. You inspire me Jan
Good Morning Jan from wet Northern California! Love all the haul! Thank you for the Tinsmith video. I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL. You inspire me Jan! I love your stitching!
Great show and glad you covered copyrights. I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL. I love quakers. I love today’s angel card. What a beautiful message and a beautiful angel too.
I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL! I have all the fabric and floss ready. Would love a bag! Thank you Jan. I’ve never really thought much about copyrights in cross stitch but you are exactly right! Thanks for bringing awareness to it.
Thank you for all the copyright information. I will admit I have been clueless when shopping online. So thank you! I love all things Quaker! Plus that added something special from a fur baby!
Thanks for all you do, Jan! Loved the visit to the Tinsmith's, plus the thought provoking session on unlicensed charts. I've been suckered by these 3 times before I learned what to watch for. 1. Etsy Star Wars chart I loved and stitched, only to realize the chart was stolen from another website and my version was less detailed than the original. 2. Unlicensed art design from Etsy, chart was very difficult to use. The artist stopped the seller, chart was removed from website, I UFO'd after 300 stitches. 3. Bought a gorgeous pdf chart, discovered the art was unlicensed, agonized for months on what to do next. I am stitching on it, and I only credit the true artist, not the online seller. Not a perfect atonement by any means, but I own my mistakes and try to learn.
Oh, that is really frustrating, isn’t it! I am so sorry that you experienced that. I hope the tips I’ve given you will help in the future. And I agree with your last one, you spent good money on it, stitch it and credit the artist. Sending you hugs, Dovie! 🤗❤️
Oh I’m so happy the sewing machine worked for you! It served me well too. Glad you made it to the tinsmith’s wife; I’ve yet to make it out there but plan to soon. You DO inspire me - I need to make some cute little pillows out of some finishes and just haven’t gotten to that kind of finish yet. Have a great week!
Jan, I purchased a bunch of Angel card sets to give as Christmas gifts this year, thanks to you. Everyone loved them. I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL. Can't wait. Hugs to you and Mike.
I live in Dripping Springs. I count Tinsmith's as my LNS. My BFF, who is also a stitcher, lives a couple blocks away. We also knit. We easily spend 5-7 hours in there. I'm sorry to hear folks weren't wearing masks. 😔 I have gift cards that are burning a hole in my pocket and I so love to shop in person, but I won't risk getting sick or getting my husband sick.
Nice to live so close to such a gorgeous shop! I was thinking later that perhaps her mom and dad have gotten the vaccine, so they don’t feel like they need to wear masks as much? I don’t know. I’m with you, I’m trying not to take any chances!
I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL. I love Quakers. Thank you for addressing copyrights. As a new stitcher I never even thought of this. I didn’t even realize artwork was being turned into cross stitch until you featured it, which I would like to thank you for. One day when I am ready to venture down that road, I will know what to look for. Thank you again.
I live in Burnet. I think it’s about a 2 hour drive but will someday make the trip. It’s looks like a cute store. There is also a nice shop in Copperas Cove. Have you been there. It’s small but jam packed with stitchy stuff.
Thank you so very much for talking about copyright. As an educator I do my best to teach my students about it, but it’s so difficult when what they see outside of school is completely different.

I appreciate the information about copyright that you talked about. I’ve been wondering about some of the free charts that I see being shared on Facebook and especially on Pinterest. I’m going to check as carefully as I can before using them. I love Quakers. You inspire me Jan.
Jan, the angel card really hit home with me this morning. Feeling not so good with too much bad news, family illnesses. So, thank you. I plan on joining the serendipity see along and yes, as always, you inspire me, Jan. Looking for the goodness in this day.
Thanks for another great video, always a pleasure to see what you are up to and more. The copyright info was great. I so love Quakers, yours is a delight especially as it is not a huge project. Take care, - Sue Thompson
Thank you for helping us learn some ways to be careful of copyright laws. It was really interesting to hear your tips. I plan on joining the serendipity SAL. I love quakers!
I absolutely love the video of The Tinsmith's Wife, what a great shop and I love the models on display. I don't think I have seen some of those designs before. Thank you for showing that shop. I also love your small pillows, so cute. I was the one interested in the school days cross stitch magazine but did not win. I did find one on ebay and was able to buy it. I love Quakers. You inspire me, Jan! You do some beautiful cross stitching, Thank you.
Jan inspire me, and, I love Quaker’s. But really, you do. I have to say my stitching and choices in patterns were predictable. After seeing your GORGEOUS stitching, I realized, not all my stitching had to be just blackbird! I’ve started looking and buying some of the patterns you have shown from Etsy downloads. It’s made me excited and more awake to what is out there. I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos. Today’s video has made me VERY aware that I need to be more careful in my choices. Thank you! Your a Star!
I loved the tour of the Tinsmith's Wife shop. I might have to make a trip to Texas someday. Thanks for the copyright information. It was really helpful. I have seen diamond painting kits and cross stitch charts in different shops that I questioned because either it looks like an artist I know or it's from a movie or tv show. That bag that your friend made you is awesome! It looks like one of my two black cats, and with the inside having sheet music that fits with my two sons who play piano. If she ever wants to sell her bags and has more of that fabric, I'd get one. And I love Quakers. You inspire me Jan and enable me. I plan on stitching the Serendipity SAL.
It was fun to visit The Tinsmiths Wife shop. I’ll have to pass through when I’m in the area - hopefully sooner than later. I plan on joining the serendipity Sal. I love quakers. You inspire me Jan.
Thank you Jan for all the points to look at if in doubt of the rights of a pattern. Very helpful. Someone had gifted me a Sunjoy kit two years ago. It was due your mishap I learned about it. Unfortunately in that time I bought a kit myself, the seller then claimed she designed the pattern. Well, maybe in a way she did it a bit as she altered a freebie chart and added new elements too it. But claiming copyright isn’t right.... I was mad when I found out. Quaker, yes I love quakers.I just finished a small one in a wintertheme. You enabled me by showing it with your shopping tour. Thanks, it was a joy to stitch. Have a good week ❤️
I plan on joining the serendipity stitch along. I love quakers. I hope the name Kathy is lucky again on the random picker 😊. Thanks for the information on what to look for on unlicensed sites. That was very helpful. Stay safe & well.
You inspire me Jan! I came across your channel and when you said you were from San Antonio, I immediately subscribed! I need to take a road trip to The Tinsmith's Wife. Thank you for the info you gave us on copyrights.
Loved the section on copyrights. As a musician and teacher I see copyrights ignored all the time, I even dealt with this while I was in college. It was my job as a student secretary for the head of the music department to send copies of programs to ASCAP, the music copyright police, to make sure everything we were doing was okay. You inspire me Jan.
Love seeing all of your progress. I love the butterfly keychain and I plan on joining the serendipity SAL. I do love Quakers and especially Jeannette Douglas designs. The angel card was so true this morning as it has been another hard day.
Thanks for the info on copyright. Yes, I love quakers, plan on joining Serendipity SAL, and working on Prim series, 8th part in Feb. So with just over one year of x-Stitch after a 30+ yr pause, I jumped in during pandemic. Your shopping segments and many floss tube videos are so tempting!
I just found out I was a gift recipient !!!! Wow! Congratulations to all! That’s so funny you came up with a bunch of “Kathy’s!” Thank you so much, you are so giving, Jan, and I’m truly blessed!!!
Thank you for bringing to my attention the copyright issue and what to look for when purchasing digital Xstitch designs. I plan to join in on the Serendipity SAL.
I plan on stitching the Serendipity stitch along and the Serendipity quilt along. Thanks for inspiring me to get back to stitching. I found an unfinished pattern I am planning on completing this year. Again, thanks fo for all you do.
Thank you for the informational section on copyright. I tend to stick to well-known sites because of this, but it's good to know what to look for in case I go wandering through etsy. I love Quakers.
You inspire me, Jan! I am going to be part of the Serendipty stitch along. Thank you for the beautiful angel card at the end. My daughter is an angel now and the angel on the card resembles her.
What fun to see all those samples in the shop. I want to make all the things! Excited to hear my name for the needle case and minder. Thank you. Glad to be a kathy today.!
I plan on joining the serendipity Sal stitch along! You inspire me Jan I love quakers I really enjoyed the tour of the tin smiths wife shop! I loved the segment on intellectual copyright etc that was so interesting thank you 💗
Another educational and wonderful podcast. I now start across the vertical thread and it really has made a difference in my stitches. I plan on joining the serendipity SAL and I love quakers!!
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan !!!!!!! Hi !!!!! So great to see you ! LOOOVe your pillows - how Charming are they ??? !!!!!!! Fascinated over the eye-opening segment oil Copywriting rights. Shocked to hear about Mike and his book !!!!! How BRAZEN of that person ! That must have been VERy disturbing and shocking to find out about. Thank you for educating us about this unfortunate reality - what to look out for . Thank you you sweet friend for your fab visit today. Stay safe and well - our best to you - ALWAYS. xo xo marcia and Pammie

I love Quakers. And I really do!!!! Thanks Jan for another lovely video.
You inspire me Jan. Love the copyright sections. Thanks
Welcome, Maria! So glad you are here! Maybe some day we can meet up at The Tinsmith’s Wife! Wouldn’t that be fun! Some day when this madness is over!
I plan on joining the Serendipity SAL! Anxiously awaiting the start, but would LOVE the goodies that go with it! You are a treasure, thanks!
Well, then welcome back to cross stitch! It’s a fun new world, isn’t it! Glad I am helping you discover a bunch of new goodies! 😁
