This was a great interview! I was a public school teacher for eight years and was so frustrated with the dysfunction as well as how school had transformed into a business like institution. When I became a stay at home mom, I found the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling that employs many concepts that were discussed. It’s so important to let kids work at their own pace so that they can build confidence, independence, and discipline without comparison.
Sarah Janisse Brown has 15 children (5 adopted) and was also ADD (she’s late 40 now) but allowed to run free (in the woods n fields) when her mom figured out she needed it. She’s developed a whole line of education material (she’s homeschooled all the kids) esp for LD kids but many neurotypical kids love them too. It’s Learning Games. No joke!
I was one of those kids who always asked "why"... luckily it didn't seem to be an issue for me in school, but my mom labeled me as a problem child because of it. I don't speak to my mother for many reasons, so much trauma as a child.
Because the speak when spoken to mentality helps produce good workers!! As we move into the Generative AI world, critical thinking will become more important as the basic processes of our current learning will be handled by AI.
There's an excellent book called, "Accelerated Learning." It's the best I've seen on the education of children and youth and why our system is failed. It's been around for years.
I learned the lines of a TS Eliot poem 50 years ago. I had no idea at the time why learning it was useful, in fact it wasn't at the time. But now, at 64, I chew on the words because they are embedded in my memory. Was that wasted education? Not all knowledge has to be used within 14 days to be of use.

Who's the author? I found many books with that title.
