LOVE the new portfolio! So clean and elegant! 🙌Thanks brother for sharing and documenting your investment journey over all these years. It's been a privilege to follow along 😊
I’ve got a hunch you’ll add more to your portfolio. I started with VOO as well but then started to add ETFs that serve different purposes - VCN, VXUS, SCHD, VUG. I’m just willing to guess you’ll find fun doing the same eventually ;)
I live off dividends on ETFs, for sure it can improve your wealth if you reinvest them to buy more shares, creating a snowball effect that allows your investments to compound over time. It's one of the most passive and effective ways to build an income stream. well managed steady growth for me.
tbh I keep compounding, adhering to well established patterns from a professional, even as a rookie, can bring tremendous value! I’ve trimmed, added also and now my average growth has increased in the past year while participating behind a top performer. effectively remits over hundred k annually and increasing.
I started my investing journey watching your videos and followed closely along since the start of the pandemic. i sold off majority of my individual holdings early this year and switched to XEQT. The main driving factor was simplicity and automation stemming from my growing family. That was more valuable to me. Definitely feels great to know you have done the same for similar reasons. All the best!
The dividend on voo is like 1.2%. Therefore the 15% is like 0.2% per year. If you need to convert the money to Canadian Wealthsimple is going to charge you like 2.5% it made more sense to convert to Canadian using Norbert’s gambit while it was with TD
Mine is 5% AVUV (RRSP), 35% VCN (non registered), everything else is ITOT(in RRSP), XUU (in all other accounts). Rebalancing is great with stock events app!
I'm glad to see some canadian investing UA-cam channels understanding the benefit of holding total world etf's and the s&p because I see it too often where UA-cam investors think they're smart enough to own a bunch of individual stocks and sure while "Canadian dividend stocks!!!" sounds great on paper. At the end of the day you want to set yourself up with the best total return at the end of your life. I still get an amazing quarterly dividend off my XEQT and VFV. But at the end of the day it's even arguable whether the dividends are considered beneficial "extra income" because the price of stocks goes down when they're paid out. It is nice as a little bit of extra emergency money in the worst case scenario or during retirement if I decided to hold some of it. But yeah, if you're not beating these ETF's there's literally 0 reason to be playing around with a big portfolio, in the end you're just selling yourself short for no reason.
Woohoo! I've been waiting for this video since I saw your portfolio update on Blossom!! 😄 You are glowing, it truly reflects how happy you are with this decision so I am very happy for ya! 💯 Sometimes, simplicity is the best policy.
Here is why index investing makes sense in my opinion. Brandon even said his days were researching stocks. If you look at his picks many have been losers lately. The market has a huge emotional component and research captures only logic. The emotional component is getting larger with time. You can’t predict when the emotion shifts for no reason on an individual stock very well because it can be as simple as the wording of something in a press conference. Generally money doesn’t flow out of the market. When one stock gets sold for no real reason other than emotion the money flows into something else that is likely also in the index. So the index isn’t affected nearly as much by emotion and therefore you are less susceptible to illogical shifts in sentiment which are unpredictable but still capture most of the upside because when the a big stock goes up often a rising tide lifts all ships
The overlap was the first thing I noticed, but you're right about it actually being an "ok" thing - seeing as that's where most of the action is anyway. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to the dark side. The index always wins in the end. I’m 53 I started with mutual funds in the late 80s,90s then bought individual stocks in the 2k times, then just realized my younger self was right, index investing (not in mutual funds but etfs) is the winner. Never look back. Picking stocks is a losers game.
If somebody is using wealth simple and investing in TFSA account right now not in RRSP then VFV is a better option definitely as you can’t do Norbert's Gambit on wealth simple and you don’t have to worry about withholding tax
No ECN fees, dividend reinvestment and fractional shares are nice on WS that QS just doesn’t have. IMO Wealthsimple for Canadian domiciled ETFs and QS for single stocks/US stocks
so far i think he is just transferring his old holdings into etf and most of them were already usd stocks. with 100k in his account, he gets the free usd account from ws meaning he doesnt need to pay the exchange fee. as for new deposit, i remember he mentioned in an old video that he doesnt do norberts gambit so he probably had to pay exchange fee in qt anyway.
Mr Beavis, so when you convert USD with Wealth Simple,or do you just link a USD account from your bank to your Wealth simple RRSP and transfer funds into the wealth simple USD account. From there you buy VOO with your USD? Is this how you avoid the conversion fees?
I just started investing, and ur vids are a big help! I hope you’ll make another video on ur TFSA wealthsimple portfolio, it’s what I started opening to start. Thank u!
"I've owned individual stocks for nearly 20 years" translation for hey I underperformed the market for 20 years, now I have joined the index fund. Aside from that, I don't understand why people choose VOO and ZEQT (or VEQT or something similar). They overlap and therefore redundant. Just own entire world index fund (VT), or just the S&P500 (VFV or VOO).

You're listing two stocks that are just the US economy. That's not a very safe strategy is why. The reason he holds a total world index is because it's basically the world economy. And then he holds VOO which bumps his weighting in the US a little bit more because of his enthusiasm in the developments of technology there. But still leaves him with room for hedging that as Countries can have their downfalls. It's not smart to ride on just hype when none of us can predict the future.
Can you clarify if WHT applies to non-registered accounts holding US ETFs? To be clear, I want to buy US ETFs in my non-registered (non-RRSP, non-TFSA) account. DO I still get taxed the 15% withholding tax on dividends?
New to investing. Getting in late in the game… Is buying US ETF’s a good idea? Are they ETFs that have the Nvidia’s, Amazon’s and Coca Cola’s available on the TSX? Maybe a future video on the pros/cons and explaining that scenario for the beginners.
We each have to muster the courage to change and adapt when the time comes, good for you ! The ETF itself seems great, but I am put off buy the low AUM and daily volume, should you need to make another change down the road. XEQT & VEQT offer better opportunities slightly better purchase price IMO. Thanks and take care
When you purchase USD stocks, it automatically converts it and if you have the USD Account, the stocks are placed in that account then so if you sell, the USD stays there and not converted back to CAD. Also, if you have a USD account at a Canadian bank, I believe you can now transfer USD in, however it cannot be from a US Bank Account.
hii there, i have been following your videos recently, can you help me start in investing in mutual funds i don’t know where to buy and make a portfolio
I would like to know the US to Canadian conversion fees that are charged when having a Wealth Simple account? I wanted to switch from my TD Webroker US account to Wealth Simple account for trading US stocks but it was costly when doing stock purchases or sells. Unless things have changed recently Wealth Simple was not worth it for US accounts. What am I missing. Currently I change all my Canadian dollars to US dollars with Norberts Gambit as I hold a US account within TD.
Isn’t ZEQT overlapping VOO coz ZSP tracks the S&P 500 index too. Trying to understand why didn’t u keep it simple by investing in VOO, ZCN and international markets like emxc/xef.
I am a new user with wealthsimple, also from Canada. I am wondering if there is more benefit to buy ETF in an RRSP over a non-registered account. Thoughts? I already have an rrsp with another financial institution, is it a bad idea to open a second rrsp for ETF?
Question: if i have to put 50k into vfv or voo..... isn't it just better to have more share in vfv? Overtime get more values even if I have to pay 15% tax with vfv. Why would i go voo with less share for same amounts of money
Hello, bro, my money is in USD bank. But I don't have a usd account with Wealth Simple. I took it out of the bank, converted it, returned it to the bank, brought it back to Wealth Simple, converted it to dollars again through the broker and am buying USA stock. So what do you advise me. Hey Brandon, I've been following you for some period now. Watching you talk about investing has shifted my mindset completely. I want to become an investor but I'm absolute beginner. Suppose I want to start investing journey with these two ETF VFV and ZCN for long term purpose, how do i do it exactly? I mean do i need to set a recurring payment monthly or yearly or it's just one-time investment?? Sorry if my question sounds childish or meaningless but I'm just curious to know more. I hope you'll help me:)
Obviously,I’m not Brandon, but I can tell you that you first set up a wealth simple account,if you’re Canadian. Link it to your bank account, and buy (vfv) for example. You then just add money to your trading account as you see fit and buy vfv (if that’s what you like) as your funds allow. It’s quite an easy process. I’m kinda old and I managed to figure it out, you’ll do just fine!👍

Once I hit 100K and get a complimentary USD account then the fees will be gone :) Thanks for the video and transparency on everything your doing.. A+
I use wealthsimple premium and the service has managed my portfolios (TFSA, FHSA, and RRSP) well, but at this this juncture the MER is costing me $900+ / year and I'd like to keep that money because I know one of the best investment strategies is to keep investment costs as low as possible. My TFSA, FHSA, and RRSP are all level 10 risk growth portfolio, and I also have 30k in private equity within TFSA I want to move away from a managed portfolio to an unmanaged portfolio and plan to purchase 1-2 ETFs per account to avoid paying the MER fee while still taking a passive approach with my investments - a strategy that I've been using effectively with the managed portfolios but with the downfall of the fee. Do you have any videos that can walk you through the process of going from managed to unmanaged? And how to monitor the account?
Brandon did you talk this over with your father to get his opinion on your decision. I know your a very capable investor and no insult intended. Just a question as I myself are certainly researching more positive direction. I own VOO stock but not the Canadian one because of the tax but I am not at the amount you are. Thanks.
Wondering, How come I dont see any trade of you when you sold all your investments before making this new portfolio? Or rather you have it hidden in another brokerage which is not linked here! I remember you started blossom for transparency and not for showing us something which is sponsored.
I'm confused by VOO vs VFV. VFV has the minor wht discussed in the video and a slightly higher fee. How come the returns have been better? It seems that even if you adjust for currency exchange, the Canadian fund has still slightly outperformed. What am i missing?
i guess part of it is because cad value has been dropping. when that happens, the vfv gain is the combine of voo gain + currency conversion gain. (didn't do the calculation to verify whether the number matches).
What surprises me is how little diversification investors research or seem to care about failing demographics around the world right now. I wouldnt feel comfortable putting my money in any other country outside the US and/or mexico for the next 20 years. I cant see the future but theres a downside to diversification globably i think based on aging populations and declining birth rates. The US and mexico are the only countires i have been able to identify as safe plays. Buy India for your grandkids.

Yeah that was my thought too, but the discrepancy seems greater than just the currency difference.
He is an emotional investor. In comparison to his dad. He was biased with most of the stock especially Alibaba.
Hi Brandon! Your video sounds like a farewell.
No QQQ? Fail.
