I love how disciplined the Japanese are when it comes to their workplace or how they do the work. I just don't think so if it really points out to the whole Japanese community, but I love their idea of Kaizen-or continuous improvement:)

Yoshi, I admire these from my Japanese clients before but I guess I go with " we need to balance our time for work, family and play". Firstly, I encourage 8 hours on a daily basis and do overtime when there is real need for it only. We need sometime to relax our mind from work-related stress. Secondly, we need to interact and bond with our family to keep the commucation lines going. Thirdly, we need some relaxation time to recharge our energies as well.

I don't work beyond 8 hours as it seems ineffective working attitude. I always plan my work schedule to finish within 6 hours so that I can do extra work within the two hours. I resent bosses who will ask me to work overtime just because others are doing it. I consider those kinds of bosses as slave drivers and not good managers.

My boss’ is somewhat like this but he’s Chinese! Lol! Like we worked overtime and not get paid for it and given a rare chance to take the overtime work spent as a free day but you have to schedule it beforehand but it was so rare that you don’t even get the chance to do it because of continuous production work, so you just tend to forget it so when I got the chance I filed a 1-2 weeks leave and there’s this one time I filed a leave and had a vacation out of the country I received an email early in the morning and I didn’t answer him ‘cause I’m on vacation hello! 😂😅 (but I got nervous that I didn’t reply 😅) but anyways the email was not that important so its okay! But when I came back from vacation I met him and gave her wife a ‘pasalubong’ (souvenir) and it’s like its just a normal day. Hahaha!

working overtime when it’s not needed for me is not only inefficient but unproductive… it will cost ur mental and physical health to deteriorate…. much more if it’s unpaid…. that’s the reason why eventhough I love Japan I still don’t feel like living and working there because of this work culture… I value the work life balance life….

Hearing your explanation helped me understand more about the japanese’ mindset to working. Thank you so much for explaining it so concisely and as simple as possible.
To me, that (the mindset) is a double-edged sword in many ways. It is based on noble ideals such as teamwork, harmony (in a sense of the whole group), and the emphasis of inclusivity of the entire group when it comes to achieving progress which, I believe, sets Japan apart from the rest of the world (and is also the reason why Japan is and will always be associated with quality work). Downside is, the expectations bar is set waaaaay too high, causing the individual to sacrifice the basic necessities (like personal time-off, rest, social needs) which led to a substantial number of suicide cases because of work. Too much of anything is oftentimes not good.
In spite of all these though, It is an indisputable fact that Japan is still a model example of progress and discipline, and quality service to a lot of people around the world, and is by all means a truly wonderful nation with wonderful people. And as a fan of the country myself (i’m from the philippines btw), i’m always in awe of Japan. I’d love to visit there someday and experience life over there, given the chance

Here in the Philippines we also do overtime work. But the problem is not same in your country which have a lot of hiring job for your people. Here in Philippines the people are hardworking but when we talk about job, amh" in my opinion only 70% had a good job here because some companies they criticise the people especially when they are Muslim. I love how Japan monitor and help their people.

The working culture over there sounds pretty toxic. Makes me curious ... for example, as a manager of a company, wouldn't you feel bad if your worker felt obligated to stay just because you are, especially if you know they've rendered the work that was needed?
It's sad. Overtime is inevitable but shouldn't be the norm. The word "teamwork" shouldn't be used as an excuse to pull down more productive people into overstaying in the office. Real care for others is making sure that everyone is healthy and that they can also live their lives outside of work. :(
I'm from the Philippines and I've actually been in both ends of the spectrum.
I've been in a company that has an overtime-work culture, in so far as you'd feel embarrassed to clock out at the end of your shift because you feel like you haven't done enough, when in fact, you've literally finished more than what you're paid to do. The fact that there's a shower room in the office for those who stay overnight (because of overtime) is a testament to that (and I've used that quite a few times during my time there haha). Oh, and I didn't have overtime pay. Instead, we had a small meal and transportation allowance depending on the hours of overtime.
On the flipside, I am happy with the current company I'm in. It puts premium on physical and mental health, as well as passions outside of the office. Our management team makes sure we don't have to overtime unless necessary, and they are transparent with the financial situation of the company (and I'm grateful that we're doing pretty good). I've learned, thrived here and grown so much more than anywhere else I've worked with.
Another thing about the Philippines is that we don't mind taking vacation leaves nor sick leaves if needed. We have a whole lot of holidays as well.
Edit: Haha, sorry for the long comment. Mental health in the workplace is important to me and I just really think that people should "work to live", and not "live to work". I respect people who find joy in working and dedicating their lives to that, if that's what makes them happy, but not everyone is like that.

In the Philippines, flexibility towards work means, how can you do your work well in a short period of time. Because we only have 8-10 working hours, if and only if you want, you can do overtime work and it must be paid, if it was not paid by the company, it means, the company does not following the law. :)
to filipinos: correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Overtime works the same way in Finland. You do it if you want. And many people want because you get 1,5-2 times your normal salary. An empolyee can sue the empolyer if they are not paid for overtime. And refusing to work overtime is perfectly acceptable and will not affect your career in any way like in some other countries.

Wow! I love this kind of content. 💯💯💯
I worry about my Japanese students who tend to work too much
risking much of their personal being, like relationship with family/friends or their own interests/hobbies
I know it's very impossible to have a work and life balance but the equation mustn't have a huge difference that once work was taken from them, they'll think that they lost it all.
Once, one of my students was crying because his co-worker (who was single, living alone, and was very committed to his job) made a trivial mistake at work and was demoted, ended up committing suicide by jumping from their office building😢
To all those people who work with Japanese people or are friends with them - or even to any of your colleagues who tends to work overtime, please do try to ease off the pressure that they are feeling and, if possible, take the time to help them and listen to their struggles or just be a friend with whom they can lean on esp. when the burden is too much to handle.

In Finland, we value quality instead of quantity. If you're not productive enough or prepared enough, you're wasting everyone's time and effort. To achieve a great result, you need to maintain your health as well as work-life balance. Each field or industry has its own collective agreement, which employers and employees must comply with. The agreement defines, among other things, working hours and the rights and obligations of the parties. Normal working hours in Finland are usually 37-40 hours per week.
At my workplace, we think that lunch and coffee breaks are not only an employee's right but an employee's obligation to take as agreed. Private life, health and adequate rest are a priority, work only comes second. My employer believes that self-management is a big and important part of professionalism. Self-management means that you can assess your own skills as well as your state of health as a whole. When you know yourself well you can act professionaly in every step. If you are not fully functional, you may make mistakes, causing additional work for others and the whole suffer. A professional knows when in need a micro-break or additional training of even sick leave. When you know how to evaluate yourself well, you are at your most productive and you will be able to make the best decisions.
For me, this is the best working environment. I have a feeling that my employer cares about me and my well-being at work. That is why I am a loyal employee and I want to do my job even better. And I know my co-workers think the same way. Everyone benefits.

In the Philippines, we also value teamwork but in some cases, most of the filipino works for an 8 hour jobs, and if there's an excess time which is overtime, most workers will work, not because their thinking of their boss or colleague, but because the salary is not enough for the family, especially those who are working on the factories or small private companies, but in government offices or big companies, I think the teamwork most applied there.😊

relate of this topic. When I was a new worker to the company here in Japan I was like hey what!? Are they killing us!? No snack break, 45minutes of lunch break, sometimes you'll only get 30 minutes of break if too much busy. And the leaders so so so strictly. And you should not talk to the next person beside you or someone else around on you if not really needed. No cellphone while working.and to the Gov. Imployess No snacks on your table. but I already coped with it. And also japanese hate late people. And it's Because I remember I always apply to the saying that! it's better to be late than absent😅 like we were in school 😂 but never do this here in Japan. It's the number 1 rules! to not to be late! ☺️ It's not like in the philippines. In the philippines! Working while having snacks all day? NO PROBLEM! 😂CELLPHONE? NO PROBLEM!😂 TALKING WHILE AT WORKING? NO PROBLEM!😂 ITS REALLY FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭🥰🤩

Well, I am from Bangladsh 🇧🇩. Here, government jobs are way more chill than private jobs. Govt jobs are basically 9to5 jobs it includes 1hour+ lunch break also. Workload is high, time to time, but overworking is very rare. In private sector, the time limitation is uncertain. As you have said, employees tend to keep good image via overworking or they are forced to work overtime beacause of salary or to keep their position safe.

I live in Ohio, USA. Our work places have point systems. To let the company know who is on time, who is late, and who calls off work. We have 3 shifts, 1st 8 am - to 4 pm, 2 nd 2 pm - to 10 pm, 3 rd 10 pm - to 6 am. which consists of 8 hours each. This is if you work a regular 5 days a week to add up to 40 hours. Our work regulations of hours. Or you have options of 4 days 10 hour shifts and 3 days off. Alot of young people chose this option, because it can lead to 1 or 2 more part time jobs. In America bosses can actually get in trouble for overworking their employees. Most places do offer overtime which will pay time and a half. What you make an hour plus half of what you make an hour. This is supposed to have the managers rush the employees out, because bosses do not like to pay time and a half. In America we are taught to go to work do our jobs and leave, because our bosses do not pay us to make friends. They pay us for our work.

I don't completely agree, because this generation is starting to apply work-life balance, my friends work in Japan at 5 o'clock, they just go home it's okay. There are still some who are very overworked, but the culture will be abandoned slowly, because that is already a regulation from the ministry. And you are wrong to say "Japan is the worst overtime working country in the world". You can read this article data.oecd.org/emp/hours-worked.htm How about south korea? mexico? costa rica? do you know about this? This is an already researched fact. I think the stigma of overtime in Japan is slowly fading. thank you,

I been working in a Company here in the Philippines and all of our Directors are Japanese and they are very hardworking nice people and they are not abusive to many Filipinos.
They paid right and giving us incentives of course and overtime if you like too.
But over all they are really nice and serious at work and very funny too and they are easy to approach if you are having problems on your work.
That's why I love Japanese people than Korean.
I watched on television about how bad koreans treat many Fililinos at work here in the Philippines.
And I personally experience it they are yelling all of us while working and telling that we are stupid and did'nt paid us right .
    They are abusive.
Maybe not all korean but in my own experience I think most of them are like that.
When I watch on television about a 18 years old male student that working on Korean and abuse it and doesn't give salary or food.
The student said in his interview that his boss is a Japanese National because of his eyes..maybe beacuse he doesn't know his employer well...but many of us who comments on facebook said that maybe it is not Japanese because we know Japanese how nice to many Filipinos and we said that maybe it is Korean National.
At the end of the story they announced that we are right he is a Korean National who abuse a young student.
We loved Japanese even they are really serious at worked we learned from them that in life sometimes you need to be serious not always playing and do crazy things.
They are really practical in life like most of Filipinos here in the Philippines.
I will never forget how Japanese caring us in work so much and being nice.
And I feel sad about Korean who abuse Filipinos everytime I heard about it or watched in a television I felt disappointment because Filipino soldiers once help them to have a freedom that until now they are enjoying.( In battle of yultong example)
But it really sad that now a days they are
Do such things here in the Philippines.

If you work too hard and spend too many hours at your job, you will have no time and energy left to take proper care of yourself. You won’t find the time to exercise, eat foods that fuel your body, or get enough sleep. Skipping on these three elements of a healthy lifestyle is a recipe for ILLNESS. Whether it happens sooner or later, you will get ill-and working yourself until you collapse is not something that will impress anybody at work. Here in the Philippines, slaving away all of your waking hours at your job shows that you are not working smart. If you’re going to put the effort into working, make it effective. Make it efficient. Make it effing Amazing... and just finish it on time. They will reward you for your effort and not on how long you spend your time in the office. An organization is interested in the results you give not the hours you spend in that chair. You may not be able to avoid overtime out of your life but you can limit the amount of overtime. With just the right technology and attitude, you can get over with it in no time.

Successful country but it has drawbacks for example unsatisfied employees leads to personal problems depression even committing suicide. Japan has a high rate of suicide and they have no time for raising a family their population growth is very low.

Woah, your contents are really good. I'm really curious about Japan's attitude to work and I love the idea of harmony towards people esp. 'teamwork'. I think it's really good for the country to have that kind of mindset. Whilst here in my country, if our working hours is between 9am to 6pm, and if overtime is not required then we can go home and mind whatever comes next and do the other pending task in the next day.
Btw, I love your shirt. Keep up! I love F.R.I.E.N.D.S too!

What I love about the Japanese is their adherence to their integrity. They value the quality of their work or products more, unlike the others who are just after the revenue.

I do not see how anyone can be productive after having slept for only 2 hours. You need to leave work and relax in order to be able to function the next day. There are studies about the impact of lack of sleep on your brain. So what I believe is that all these people staying that many hours at work are no more productive than someone staying just 8 hours. When European countries reduced the number of working days per week, productivity increased.

The group harmony is very important in a workforce but atleast Japanese should consider that running ur own errands is as essential as work also... This will make a happy environment at work and less overtime... You can go home once ur done working..

Yes here in japan they really want to work so hard. And they were pushing me to the maximum that I can but I refuce to do it.Its really hard to go while your co workers still working but if the reason is good and its complicate things they allow you although I cam see to them that they dont like it.Japanese and filipino sometimes cant be together at work.😁half Filipino like me grow frow my parents and relatives that we should push our self because on our religion our body doesn't belong to us.if we dont takecare our selves its means thst we dont care for others.and we have a belief that if we got sick because we abuse our self fir to much work .that means we are paying away only the money that we work so hard.in the end every thing will be disappear.
One more.in our country work is only third for our family and god.Because for us we can lost our job and change it again.but relationships with family and god if they gone it will never be replace again.

Well here in the philippines we work for 9 hrs that including lunch break and 15 mins break morning and afternoon. if we are about to do overtime that is because we have an urgent job to finish but of course wiht permission to our boss. we work for good result so it will never be a backjob. not by how long we work. like in our company we a scorecard it's either 0 or 100 percent. hit or miss something like that, doesn;t matter the effort you put to the job but if its not done on the said deadline it means you're 0.

I completely understand you Yoshi however, every company around the world should follow the Labor Law of the country. You should not be guilty if you leave your boss working because you just did it as per the law of your government. Let say a 9 to 5 job, its your responsibility to work hard with in working hours because you are being paid by the company.

    • @eijneb1082
      @eijneb1082 3 роки тому

That's a very bad habit of mimicking your boss as they will work longer or harder due to the responsibility they have in their shoulder.

In our workplace, my colleagues love to render overtime for additional pay on top of their daily salary. It's good to know that camaraderie and being mindful of your workmates is instilled in your culture. I hope we, workers, get to manage our time well at work so that we don't have to render free overtime. There are more important and valuable things to do outside of work. :)

In the Philippines, mostly, working hours is from 8:30AM to 5:30PM, with two 15mins short breaks in the morning and afternoon. And 1 HR lunch break. Sometimes, working hours is extended but on your free will. Mostly, No OT pay though.
