Bret Hart was my favorite wrestler growing up. I was only 10 when it happened, I didn’t see the PPV live. I remember watching Raw the next night and wondering where Bret is. I thought it was a storyline. Then the next week I see Vince and JR talking about Bret around the table. I still thought it was a storyline. The moment I remember realizing Bret is gone forever was when DX brought out the midget dressed as Bret. Even as a kid I know Bret would not approve of that. I was devastated.
The idea for the Montreal screw job came from Jim Cornette. He explained in the Dark Side of The Ring documentary and on several shoot interviews that he got the idea from the original Montreal Screwjob. A screwjob that took place in 1931 between Ed Lewis and Henri DeGlane. It’s a long story but it was a screwjob in Montreal that was devised to screw the champion Ed Lewis out of the belt during a two out of three falls match. A match that was supposed to split the first two falls with Ed Lewis getting the third fall and winning the match. But the promoters, Henri and ref had different plans. Henri DeGlane got the first fall, and he then intentionally bit himself. Leaving bite marks and blood on his body (which was clearly illegal) he continued wrestling while concealing his wounds. Then after a rest hold, DeGlane came up in a wild frenzy of pain screaming about getting bitten. The ref inspected him and saw the wounds and immediately disqualified Lewis, granting the second fall to DeGlane and the championship as well. Ascrewjob that happened 60 some years before Bret/Shawn. Cornette talks in depth about this incident on the Dark Side of The Ring episode in particular
I know I don't show up to the live streams as often as I should have probably but it's videos like this and the WrestleMania/SummerSlam Memories videos that reminds me why I'm subscribed to GoodMicWork's channel
Vince screwed Vince. He threatened to breach the 20 year contract he signed Bret to in 96 because WWF was in "financial peril". He then encouraged Bret to negotiate with WCW even offering to help. He then made Bret his champion knowing he was in talks with Bischoff, and kept the belt on him knowing that Bret had made a deal to go to WCW that Vince helped him get. He then refused to honor the creative control that he gave Bret in the contract he agreed to. Bret had nearly 3 weeks left after Montreal that could've been used to work out an alternative scenario to drop the belt. Even at Survivor Series, he could've made the main event a 3 way by adding Undertaker and having him eat the pin to still give Shawn the belt. Vince screwed Vince
Undertaker couldn't be at the main event, his storyline was that he was shocked because he finally saw a brother he believed to be dead was not only alive, but was now even bigger and stronger than he was... Maybe Ken Shamrock or Vader could had been in the three way dance..
@@Nostalgicguy2242 Taker easily could have been inserted in. All they would have to do is use Kane's involvement in the HIAC to justify Taker being added to the match at SS with Bret and Shawn.
I started watching WWF the month prior (first WWF thing I ever saw was the Badd Blood PPV at a friend's house). My parent's didn't like me watching that stuff, so I didn't watch any wrestling around this time. I would ask my friend to recap the RAWs. The night of Survivor Series 97, I wasn't allowed to stay over to my friends house to watch. The next day, he told me all about that incident and how confusing it was. Neither of us were "smart" to the business so we thought nothing about it. Until the next night when he was talking to me about RAW and how Bret Hart is gone from the company. I made an enormous effort to try to watch RAW from that point on, be it my friend telling me what happened on RAW or taping them so I could see them late at night when my parents were asleep.
Sorry I missed the premiere. 47:00 - Given how out of it Shawn was with drugs at that point in time, I could buy that he simply doesn't remember saying that he wouldn't put Bret over.

NOVEMBER 9 2022 ON THIS DAY IN WWE HISTORY NOVEMBER 9 1997 25 YEARS AGO THE MONTREAL SCREW JOB HAPPENED THE FACT IT WAS 25 YEARS LATER AND STILL ONE OF SHOCKING MOMENTS IN SURVIVOR SERIES HISTORY
The increased PPV prices in part helped to solve the company finance woes and start turning them back around. This led to Vince going back to Bret at the 11th hour and saying he could afford the contract after all but Bret had already agreed to sign with WCW.
Vince wasn't in financial peril. But he was in the exploratory phases of taking the company public. He learned one of the first things he should do was to eliminate as much long-term debt as possible to make the company appear more solvent. His biggest long-term debt on the books at the time? Bret's 20-year contract.
As Rob Van Dam would say in the Dark Side of the Ring episode of the Plane Ride from Hell, never meet your heroes. People have watched Bret Hart for generations and idolized him and gotten them through their lives, and for him to openly admit that he cheated on Julie and had girls in different towns, I will admit that while I do think that his honesty is most appreciated, I, at the same time, still think that's it's infuriating and disappointing for everyone to know that about Canada's superhero. Do you really think that Julie appreciated Bret's honesty in his book? I do.
Everything that I've gathered from both Bret's book and Julie's book and just from what both have said in various interviews is that both of them were fairly toxic to each other. I think that their relationship was rushed from the beginning. I mean they married in their early 20s and they didn't date for that long before getting married and started having kids right after. Bret's life was such a whirlwind at that time, going from Stampede to WWF and I don't think Julie was able to adapt that well, which both have described as leading to many many fights. All Julie wanted was for Bret to be home, and Bret wanted to see where his career would go and both of them were too stubborn to call it quits. It really was just not a very healthy relationship for either of them.
Bret should have just dropped the belt. It's 15 minutes. Be a pro. Then you'll go make millions of dollars and you'll never have to see Shawn Michaels again for the rest of your life. All the drama from both of them was just middle school level nonsense.
@@radioVHS149 Bret has stated since that being in Canada really didn't factor into it. That was just an excuse he used. It boiled down to Shawn saying he wasn't willing to put Bret over.
