Absolute gold hearing Jerry’s version of the screw job. It’s one of, if not the biggest incident in wrestling history and hearing new untold info is priceless.
It's vince's fault cause he signed bret to a 20 year contract he couldn't honor and then he didn't get the belt off him before he told him he was gonna break his deal
And above all that bret had creative control on the last 60 days of his contract.

Question for you. I'm discharged active duty army and was looking to get into air Force. Why is there so many restrictions when someone wants to change military branches. Why would air Force reject prior military but take someone with no work experience with open arms?
Love Briscoe. That said some video evidence disproves even somethings he said. This is still a biased side. The real truth we will never know and don't need to.
I think Bret might have gone for a booked screw job. How about one where Owen screws him. His reasoning could've been Bret was bailing on the family for money.. Etc. Owen now would be an instant main event heel. Bret would've gone for a finish that allows his brother to gain from his leaving.

As shitty as it was, I get why Vince did what he did, or at least why he felt he had to do it.
Bret’s biggest mistake was agreeing to have a match with Shawn in the first place. As soon as Shawn told him “I would not put you over if the situation was reversed” (which was a whole month before Survivor Series) Bret should’ve went to Vince and said “I’m not having a match with Shawn under any circumstances. You can say whatever you want, I don’t care. I won’t step in the ring with him. Change the main event, put me in the ring with someone else and I’ll drip the belt. If you keep Shawn in the main event then I won’t show up.” Then Vince would have no choice but to back down like he did when Warrior threatened to no show SummerSlam 1991.

Great to hear some details from Brisco. So he told Dave to get the car ready to get Earl out cuz "it's gonna be a hot finish." Yeah that's an understatement.
No matter what anyone in the Hart family thought about wrestling in 1997 they knew the OWNER DETERMINES THE WINNER AND HOW IN PRO WRESTLING.
If Stu had to decide a winner in Stampede wrestling then I bet Bret didnt make a huge fuss about the promotion owner deciding who wins the match.
Really have to question Gerald Briscoe for questioning Bret Hart’s professionalism, when they bent over backwards for Shawn Michaels every time he was a big baby. Hypocritical. They signed a contract where he had creative control, the violated the contract. End of story.
@@chicken31947 Bret never tried to leave as champion. He said he won’t put Shawn over. That’s it. He would’ve dropped it to anyone else including Undertaker.

Jerry's take on the screw job seems legit... Basically, the same story as Bret told.... It was fascinating hearing it from his POV.
26 years later, we see the effects of that one punch are still evident with WWE booking and the fact that a large majority makes absolutely no sense.
yeah like a guy doing a full entrance just to walk back up the ramp to do commentary on a match, but before that match another guy comes out and fights the guy on commentary then and gets beat up break , and come back to a match that the guy who was supposed to be on commentary for had nothing to do with or any rival in it.

This is very interesting, I am glad Conrad makes these podcasts. I understand they are likely money losers for him and his mortgage company (most of his listeners are likely at least 50 and already have a paid for house), I hope that his other sponsors can at least bring these to break-even, Conrad puts a lot of money and work into these (I have been told that Bruce will do these via Skype or Zoom so that is one round trip plane ticket Conrad isn't buying every week or two). I read that 83 Weeks listeners brought him some business at one point, though, so at least there is some revenue attributable to his podcasts.

You LOVE to forget so many ‘IMPORTANT’ factors on Brets defence, more so the truth what actually was going on!
First off, you need to have Bret Hart tell his side too. CALL HIM. OR get a hold of me and I'll get you in touch with Bret. These guys ALL where for VINCE'S. ONE SIDED.
secondly... Gerald, Bret had a contract and you guys all messed it up, listening to HBK say they dont need bret and he would quit etc.. dont forget why the contract got ripped This is why Bret was holding his title close because he knew things where fishy EVERYWHERE. Never mind the b.s. with HBK kept doing off camera to Bret. Its funny HBK could say NO to Bret beating him for the belt... but when Bret said no to HBK, that was huge issue lol
Thirdly, Bret Refused not just because few canadians where in crowd over sea's, he literally had LEGIONS of fan's on his side outside of usa, he could literally sell out those arena's by his own name! He wasn't about to give up the belt, because he didnt trust WTF was goin on behind his back. This is very one sided and guided by promotion side talking also covering up a lot of b.s. behind camera's live on tv that was happening.
fourthly, There was issues on both sides, yes! But WWF at that time kept playing games and then Bret said, I'LL DROP THE BELT IN OTTAWA THE NEXT NIGHT ON RAW. Gerald, Vince, HBK you all didnt like that suggestion. He wanted to leave with his head up high, esp. for everything he did for that company. He also had 30 days of creative control, why are u guys pretending that doesnt matter? his lawyer wrote that in his clause to PROTECT him...because we know vince likes to bury wrestlers on there way out.
So there just is way to much to pretend its black ad white. It was business, fair... but also there was a real human that was getting b.s. his way through out last 4 months. Vince track record of lying and not giving a shit about ppl in his way is very noticeable in Wrestling, lets not pretend he is some angel.
As much as you say, it is not just black and white. But for me, I just go back to the old story of, Bret never won a title, he got it handed to him since he was a tremendous worker. Bret had then the opportunity to go to WCW to earn more money than anyone at the time not named Hulk Hogan. Bret made millions and millions. It was Vince who gave Bret the platform to become a huge star - To be able to be financially set for life.
Moreover, Bret had problems losing titles, that is a fact. For example, The IC belt in early 1992 is one example. Just listen to Jacques Rougeau, others have covered it too. Heck even Bret was writing about him thinking of Going to WCW while being the IC Champ in late 1991.
If you read Brets book you also get a hint that he did not like losing the IC belt for the second time either. But he wrote he was happy it was to the Bulldog at least.
Then Bret got emotional and reluctant about losing the WWF title in 1993 to Yoko. But he realized that he did not have any stroke back then.
In 1997, Bret had so much stroke due to the Monday Night Wars with WWF being in a difficult situation money wise and ratings wise.
Sure HBK acted like a dick and I understand he deserved to be punched real hard in the face and so on. But Vince, no. Vince was fighting for his life against WCW. Vince had just chosen a new edgier concept for WWE something to compete with WCW. Something Bret was very outspoken against. Still McMahon managed to turn the tide and win the war thanks to it.
So in hindsight, I wish Bret just would have told Vince, that sure, he did not like putting over HBK but he would do it as a favor to Vince for all those years. Would not have minded a screw finish either as long as everyone was in on it.

1 Brett's my favorite wrestler of all time. So let's start from knowing that premise.
There are holes in some things Gerry said in this 'story'. That's okay, it's been a long time. People arguing about whose fault it was now is just silly. They and we are all adults. We learn, we grow, and we move on. I won't list how Vince's side was wrong, as you listed a lot of it, and the other stuff us intellectual people know by using common sense.
But how was Bret wrong? From a die hard pro wrestling / Sports Entertainment fan that has loved Bret for 30+ years?
1) Dropping the title after the PPV isn't acceptable. Creative control or not. You're leaving the company, you know how business is done. If you refuse to lose to Shawn, which is dumb, no matter how much of prick he was being, agree to Vince's face I'll drop it to so and do at the PPV. Shawn faces winner for the main event. Example. Start of PPV. Second to last Match Steve Austin(as a existing feud was already there) beats Bret in No DQ match where Austin cheats to win, or Vince or Owen Screw him. Then Austin vs Michaels on last. Vince/DX screws Austin. Michaels wins. Now they are all beatimg down Austin. Bret comes in makes the save. Clears the ring by himself. Waves the Canadian flag etc Bret gets to keep his head held up high at home AND lose his belt.
This is the problem with screwjob. Too many egos from both sides, and horrible communication.
2) Gerry is right. In the end this is a work. If you lost to Shawn or anybody that doesn't mean you have to lose any momentum anything by it. Ask the 1-2-3 kid or Austin got from losing to you. I submit it was better for their careers in the long run LOSING at that time instead of winning.
I really don't know Vince has a huge track record of lying. He has for sure but I'm not quite sure I'd put him in the Meltzer lvl of lies and innuendo. 😉.
I'm the end its done. Hopefully all men have learned from and are better human beings now.

This is good. AND Bret took less money to stay in 96. If he leaves I'm 96, I think WWF goes out of business. They only had unstable Shawn and Taker at the time. Taker is great but look at his 97 run as champ- he didn't draw too well. Does Austin get over without Bret? Does heel McMahon happen without Bret?
