Watching this brought back alot of great memories of the old NW steam locomotives
Got to visit the 611's cab when they were waiting at a signal in Chattanooga. It was a sobering experience and I received a new appreciation for steam engines upon that cab visit. Used to "conductor" the fall excursions with Herman Lamb in the mid to late 80's When the 611 was not available, N&W 1218 pulled the excursion.
Did you get to blow the train whistle
My Grandfather used to run 611 and the other J-class locomotives between Roanoke and Crewe, VA on N&W Passenger service. Although he loved the performance and beauty of the J’s, I remember him telling me that he stayed a lot cleaner when they changed over to Diesel locomotives!
Would you happen to know if he operated any of N&W's GP18's?
@@AngryCatMan1982 .. No, he retired at mandatory age of 65 after 45 years of service, and they were still using the GP9’s. The President of the N&W was there along with all his kids and grandkids. He was allowed to take me and my cousin in the cab as he took the engine through the yard for connection back to another passenger train. Have never forgotten the moment!
@@stephenbroughman3231 Wow! That must have been quite an experience. Was he ready to retire, or would he have kept working if allowed?
The only reason why I asked about the GP18's, was because we had 4 from N&W on the now defunct Carolina Southern Railroad. Road numbers 943, 950, 951, and 958. 943 was scrapped in 2014, 950 is sitting in a deadline in Chadbourn, NC. Her future is uncertain. 951 is presumably operating as an industry switcher in GA for RJ Corman. 958's disposition is currently unknown, but believed to have been scrapped.
@@AngryCatMan1982 …. He would have kept working, but it was mandatory that railroad workers retire at 65 back then. I am not sure if that was a government or union requirement. Thanks for sharing the info on the locomotives and Carolina Southern Railroad. I remember the Railroad!
@@stephenbroughman3231 He must have had the same philosophy my grandfather had. "If you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life."
This was beautiful!
I've been lucky enough to ride behind the 611 twice its just too cool
Nice to discover another restored operational steam locomotive the Norfolk & Western 611 and train excursions.
About a month ago stumbled on Canadian Pacific 2816 steam locomotive pulling Diesel-electrics with a 2,000 ft long train various vocation restored rail cars touring Can, US, heading to Mexico and later to return.
Also learned about Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy steam locomotive was restored and operational.
Strongest would've been more accurate to say since the Js are unrivaled in tractive effort w/o a booster when it comes to 4-8-4s. The most powerful 4-8-4 would be the NYC Niagara, as they put out the most drawbar horsepower of any 4-8-4, though not by a lot. Still, the N&W J is my favorite 4-8-4, beautiful, modern, remarkably efficient for a steam locomotive, need I say more?
That was amazing you guys 611 is such a beautiful locomotive isn't she
I really loved the 611
That beautiful 611 is cool 🖤🖤❤️❤️
Great video.
I live 5 mins from the NCTM and I cannot believe I missed this back when it happened!!!! Awesome video! Also had no idea the 611 was restored there ... AMAZING :D
I wonder how often sou6133 and n&w611 handed off to one another for the Tennessean, Pelican, and Birmingham Special.
My favorite engine
Same
15:27 you got it all wrong with this lashup. It was infact an SD60i, a Dash 8 Wide Cab, and a Dash 9 Standard cab.
When it comes to Dash 8s vs Dash 9s, you can really tell if it was a dash 8 by looking at their numberboard placement, the ditchlight placement, the horn, the style of the windows, the radiator wings, vents, and especially the trucks for a Dash 8.
The Dash 9 has a different body, especially with the standard cab. With the Dash 9, you can tell it apart from its predecessor by mainly looking to see if there are mounted sun shields, which were never present on any dash 8. You can also tell it apart because the Dash 9 only came with High Numberboards, it also has the new C-C Hi-AD arrangement found on all locomotives built in present day, a majority of dash 9s have sweet/calm horns like k3 horns. The most obvious ways to tell apart a D9 from a D8 is the top of the radiator wings, as the vents on the wings do not stick out, and the cab is main look for. You can easily tell apart from a 9 and 8 just from the windows and front noses.
In conclusion, the lashup seen in 15:27 was as stated:
SD60i #6749
D8-40CW #???
D9-40C #8770
Damn, you actually scrolled through the whole thing. You deserve a cookie.
the Engine on the N&W is Back.
Awesome #611 N&W Locomotive Train Daryton Fantastic.
What's up Drayton & the Gang, Sorry, can't appear in the chats because of Guitar lessons. But anyways, 611 is my favorite steam locomotive of all time. Really want to see her in action. Love you 611 & hope you return to the mainline, soon.
Was this the Powhatan Arrow?
The Powhatan arrow ran between Cincinnati and Norfolk Virginia and the J class pulled it

Southern Streamlined locomotive close but was awesome sad it was scrapped . Sad S line downgrade to local traffic only.
I Like That Engine
Excellent video of N&W 611 J-class Locomotive leading Drayton
The NYC Niagara put out more horsepower...
Strongest would've been more accurate.
