What should I do if my ferret hates other ferrets and can't be paired with other ones? The local ferret shelter has tried to pair her with others but it's never worked out

I have my ferret for more then a month now, he used to be all alone. He has been abused by his first owners. After that he went to a home were he wasnt welcomed by his “ferret buddy” so i adopted him after that. Anyway- i have tried to let him play with a ferret but he is scared to death- also poops himself etc. I think he is happy to be on his own but people keep telling me ferrets need company.. what can i do- (he also loves to play with my pupper/dog)

Lots of people push the fact that ferrets should be with other ferrets, but that is not always the case! Some ferrets prefer to be alone and that's okay! Just like with people, they all have their own personalities!

What's your opinion on a ferret having, say, a cat companion instead of another ferret? Assuming they get along of course, and share space with eachother.

Based off what information I have read and watched, you definitely shouldn’t leave them along together with no supervision. It’s also not the same as having another ferret ofc.

Honestly, it really depends. While I don't think a second ferret is ever necessary, they do enjoy having another of their species to play. And while a cat may play with a ferret, they definitely do not have the same play style.

I've had 8 ferrets over 28 years, never owned a cage, free roamed the house. The problem with having 2 ferrets, if down the road, one dies, then what? How to find a ferret of the same age? When I had 5 ferrets, and I was down to 1, I felt sorry for it, and went out and bought kit (couldn't find one his own age) and it was a disaster. The kit wanted to play, play, play and the 5YO was played out. So I adopted out the younger one because I felt sorry for it. I have only one now and I leash walk him every single night for 6-8 blocks and a bicycle ride in the morning. I wish more people would see the value of Astrology. This one I've got now is a Scorpio with Mars in Aries, built for adventure. If I had an Airier ferret, I'd certainly get another one as Air is very social.

i really want a ferret snd i know they usually need friends but i don't have enough money :/

If money is tight, I would definitely wait. It's not the end of the world having just 1 ferret; but you should really have money set aside for veterinary bills. Their normal/routine care can be expensive, and they are prone to emergencies and illnesses like Cancer and Tumors. We've spent thousands of dollars on just one ferret, and that didn't even include normal veterinary care. That was just because of Tumors and other illnesses he had :( It can be hard waiting, but imagine how hard and upset you might be if they get sick and you can't help them.

I really want ferrets and I’m worried that when I’m at school they will have to stay in there cage all day but when I get home I can free Rome them after school and I want to get the ferret nation cage so they have lots of room so pls tell me if you think this would work!

Ferrets are great at adapting to their owner's schedules; but are usually more active at dawn and dusk anyways, usually sleeping away most of the day. If you can give them free roam time for at least 4 hours a day (and even more on the weekends), it can definitely work. The Ferret Nation cage is great! Even if you have to start out with just a single or double size unit, you can always save your money and add more units to the cage later to make it bigger!

I have a work schedule from morning 7am to 6pm, I want a single ferret and would free roam it all day long, would you think that'd work? Thanks 😊

    • @PawsToJourney

It would definitely work. Even if you caged them for the portion of the day you were gone, you could easily free roam either in the morning and evening, or for a longer period in the evening. Ferrets are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, and usually sleep most of the day anyways LOL

Hi! I have a question, if I have 2 ferrets, could I give them less free roam time?

imo no. ferrets still want human attention.
