I had my ferrets in a shared dorm room for a while... Washed bedding/cleaned their cage weekly, scooped the little box every day, used goodbye odor in the water, and tried to bathe them as little as I could. Sounds crazy but most people had no idea I had them! Only comment I had was that our room "smelled like mac and cheese" but I'm not sure if that was related to lunch 😂. If you take care of them right they smell less than dogs or cats!
I have a lot of those potty pads. I tried them with my 2 ferrets. They shreaded it to pieces 😒. Now we use pine pellets (kiln dried the horse stall stuff) in a litter box. I recommend it, keeps oder down, absorbs fast and cheap $5-6 for 40lbs.
Pine bedding is bad for all pets. Urine reacts with pine and creates noxious fumes. Essentially it's ammonia which negatively affects the respiratory system. Yesterday's News is made from recycled newspaper. Usually the safest option.

I really want another ferret. Im debating, i used to take my ferret to class in college because she slept in my sweater all day. My classmates loved her as did I
I adopted my ferret and she was fed the Marshall's diet , her skin and coat was ROUGH, not shiny and smelled like a pond, it got better when I gave her a zupreem diet but It didnt help. I just currently was able to buy the wysong epigen 90 ferret food , I'm still switching her but her odor has got so much better!!! I love how the ferret is just chilling the entire time 😂😂 thank you for this video. Hoping to get my first fur noodle soon and trying to do as much research as I can before owning one
What a lovely video! 🤗 I have owned and loved many Ferrets and can’t imagine my life without them. When you touched on Marshall Ferrets, you mentioned the tattoos they receive. I have owned many Marshalls, but have only had one with an additional foot tattoo. After doing some research and contacting Marshall directly, I wasn’t able to get any clear cut answers about why some receive the additional tattoo. This may be bias, or pure speculation, but the Ferret I have with the additional tattoo is by far one of the most unique and intelligent I’ve ever owned. I’m wondering if you see any difference in the one you have? Sometimes my husband and I joke that he’s a supreme being haha Thank you for the lovely videos you make and shedding more positive light onto the Ferret community! Be well! ::sniff:: 😂💗 P.S. I have had the print you made of Moose in the chef hat hanging in my kitchen for years. It’s prompted many lovely conversations with family and friends ❤️
I got a rescue with a foot tattoo and never thought anything about it. I haven't checked my dark ferrets thoroughly but I don't think they have it. My foot guy is white and has a grey tail and a few grey spots. He is deaf and likes to lay on his back in the middle of the floor or at the gate. He also hates getting his feet wet so he stands in the kibble bowl to drink water because one of my other guys likes to splash water all over the food tray.
Moose is our little angel and has a foot tattoo, and Albert is our chonky speed-demon, and he has a foot tattoo 😆 Correlation-wise, they seem to be more cuddly than Newt (our super-genius), but I may just be wishful-thinking. I also reached out to Marshall and they said it's random - curious! Btw, the fact that you are one of the few people who own one of our original Moose prints and you just commented literally just made me SO HAPPY! 😍😍😍
I keep my ferrets in my old room which is 2 feet away from mine and keep a baby gate infront of the door and keep the window open, I also make sure theres no way they can get out the window nor get out of the baby gate.
I really wish more people knew that owning a ferret was the same time and energy as a dog.. ferrets are not easy.. they do not belong in a cage! They are more loving than a cat. They are smart enough to make you fetch the ball!
I got used to the smell and don't mind it anymore. If they are given healthy food and are healthy, then they really don't smell bad. But I also regularly change their bedding. I like the idea of potty pads!
I really appreciate that your videos are well done and researched. Many ferret owners only believe what blogs tell them about care and nutrition. All of your advice was safe and appropriate
i'm binge watching all your videos + emzotic and pazuandfriends because i convinced my mom to look into adopting a ferret. i want to start out with one and then get another one about a year after, since i'm a first time owner and i live in an apartment. i've done a lot of research, i compiled a 5 page information sheet with the best brands of raw meat for ferrets, the best enclosures and bedding and the most reputable ferret shelters near me. i put a lot of time and effort into researching all the basics, finding vets that treat exotic animals and comparing prices, and clearing out and ferret proofing certain rooms in my house. it took a bit of dedication to convince my mom, but i showed her i wanted a ferret enough to take the time and effort into researching how i can be the best owner for them. i have a really important question though. my room isn't really that big, though i can comfortably fit a ferret enclosure beside my bed. it is carpeted though and i'm wondering if i should shuffle around my room to have more open space for my ferret and their mess so that vacuuming and cleanup is easier, or should i put the ferret cage in a different room altogether? i really enjoy your videos and they make me really happy, continue doing what you do! 💗
Wow! Sounds like you will make a great ferret parent! It depends on what kind of cage you will be getting, and how much free-roam time your ferret will get. I really liked having the cage in my room when I first got Moose so I could really pay attention to his behavior. But I know that the ferret nation cage be VERY large and hard to accomodate, which is why some people opt for the Feisty Ferret. Start with your room and shuffle it around to make life easier - then once you have a handle on things you can put him in a more open room!
Where can I get your wall tunnel?? It’s in the background and I’m so amazed!!! I don’t remember my ferret growing up ever smelling bad. But I’ve met other ferrets that have very STRONG odor.
Hi, have 8 rescue ferrets, never once had to bathe my ferrets because I have a similar bedding routine, but use a non bio freshener, find the ferrets fur takes in the flavour of freshner, also because its bedding ,the body heat of the ferrets sleeping releases the fragrance into the atmosphere, almost like an air freshner
Wearily the best thing I watched all day. I have ferrets and I agree with everything that was said. Thank you for the proper education for others with ferrets. Only thing is mine are on a strict raw diet with NO supplements. Just the proper 80/10/5/5 model and they are the healthiest ferrets I have had. (I have had 14 ferrets in the past 10 years.) 🖤

I've always kind of forced her to lay on me when she was quite young, when I first got her she wouldn't even lay on her back but now she'll just chill on her back while I pet her belly 😊 I have 2 kits at the moment that are slowly getting more affectionate everyday by me picking them up and laying them on their backs and petting there belly's heads, behind their ears ect.. I think handling them often is key 😊😊 so sorry didn't see this message until now 😱😱
Had my Ferrets 2 months now, I watched this video a few times before getting them. I was scared. Turns out, ferrets don't smell. It's just their cage. Easily fixed by scooping twice a day. Use a non toxic wipe on the bars around where your ferrets toilet when you do the scooping. doing this, my cage takes about 5 days to get smelly. I just wait an extra 2 days and then wash bedding and then do a febreeze vinegar wipe down. Febreeze is good at removing odour of both the ferret waste and the vinegar. Just spray a few times into the vinegar + water spray bottle. The ferrets themselves don't smell. Unless they poof, but that's like someone has farted. It goes quickly if you open a window and it's entirely bareable.

I used to have ferrets and I love the way they smell. Mine were slightly musky but had an under sweet scent, maybe like a fresh washed linen sheet. They are very loving and females gave me little ferret kisses. I very seldom had to correct their behavior, mostly because of ferret proofing my house where they were always playing. My first ferret was a male and if any of them were to get into anything, it would have been Sammy. He hated the word: 'No'
Sammy knew when he was in trouble, he would War Dance across the floor and Dooked and chatter at me. As if to say "Catch me if you can and BTW I will be making the next mess for you to clean up.".

Is there a reason you don’t talk more about a raw diet for ferrets? Easiest way to prevent smell is to feed a raw diet. There are plenty of raw diet resources.
Hey Veronica! This is a great question, in fact, we are just beginning our raw transition journey ourselves by taking @pazuandfriends diet course! We are documenting the before & after effects on our ferrets, which will be its own future video. This video was designed for new ferret owners and novices to begin practicing positive ownership habits that can help reduce the environmental odor of their ferret, but I'm excited to talk about the benefits of going raw as well in the future ♥
@@TheModernFerret I am also doing her mentoring program it's an excellent program he is very very educated in the raw diet I definitely strongly recommend anybody looking to transfer over to a Raw diet that they check out her UA-cam channel
Hollistic ferret forum can help you transition for free as well! I have also helped over 20 ferrets transition as well using the Hollistic ferret forum outline after switching my guy, and I still help more students daily 😊
...perhaps because ferrets tend to hide their surplus food.... Which is no prblem with dry skibble, but which can become a problem with mest, especially if you keep your ferrets as pets indoors.
So my ferrets actually dont smell that bad, but my room now smells HORRIBLE! I’ve got 2 air purifiers and I feel cleaned my room... could this be from shedding season?
We just bought a ferret on Saturday so we are still learning. But my husband made a comment about the smell and how I need to up my Scentsy game {I'm a consultant) I have not used my Warmers at all since buying her because I cannot find any solid answers. Is melting wax harmful to ferrets? She is just little and has had some tummy troubles from the stress of coming into a new home. We are also trying to litter train so she's going in a few different corners in her cage so her pooping all over I'm sure doesn't help even though we are trying to stay on top of it and only keep some poo to put in her boxes to encourage her to go in there.
Beeswax candles are ok, but stay away from essential oils, candles, fragrances, and incense. They have sensitive respiratory systems and cats & ferrets cannot process essential oils the way we do (it can be toxic to them).
Can i give my ferrets freeze dried food like duck chiken and rabit it activates with water ive been reasearching ferrets for 2 years turned 13 2 days ago im planing to wwit to get 11,000 for my axolotel and ferret so when i do get them ik i will have the money started up
@@TheModernFerret yep=w= Also, I can't really tell what the white ferry's name is. Or do you have two or something? So far my guesses are Edward, Ember and Amber ;-; thanks for all the help though! Scooter I can help a bit better with everything that I've learned, especially the bath, he'd jump out and scratch me and my brother. Ow
Hi, I love your videos! I want to ask I have a 4 month old ferret and she uses a corner litter box but sometimes she makes a mess and I change it fairly regularly. Do you think I should switch it to a diaper pad all over the cage at the bottom? Because if I put just half of it At the bottom of the cage she will try to go under it and misplaces it moving it around. Thanks
Hi Glen! We really enjoy using the potty pad but had to literally duct-tape them down the first few weeks in order to get the ferrets used to them as their new litter. We have more tips in our potty training video: ua-cam.com/video/FjuvYIQx9rE/v-deo.html
You will have to make extra sure your house is ferret-proofed! And you will not want to keep them in a cage all day, you will want to continue their free-roam lifestyle, but you can still train them to sleep in a cage!
Great share! Reading the internet it seems like the smell of ferrets is the worst in the world. With these tips I feel a bit more comfortable considering ferrets as pets 🥰. I mean I've kept rats pretty much odorless applying the same tips as in this video.
In a year late to the game here in comments - I wouldn’t take the advice of a pet store employee unless they own, or have owned ferrets. I wouldn’t use baby powder on a ferret because they groom themselves or each other. Our ferrets don’t smell any more than our dogs (and less than a wet dog). We abide by the things in this video that she talked about & we have little to no smell in the house. Hoping you’ve had success with your nood
This is an old video… but I have a question. Can Ferrets go outside? Not like in the open… let me explain, I live in a apt and we have this kinda semi open space for the washing machine… that gets a lot of ventilation… it’s that ok ?? Will it be bad in winter? (in here it doesn’t snow, neither we have sub-zero temperatures)

Mix white vinegar with water (1:1, or in other words, 50% of each) and try that! Safe, cheap, and effective. ♥
can u do a all in one care guide
Could you make a vid on different types of ferret colors and the names of the ferret color
That's a great idea!
@@TheModernFerret thank you! I love your videos
My ferret use to smell like honey also a bath is do for her in a moth
Are incense sticks ok?
About people liking the ferret smell, YES!! None of my family understands it especially my mom but I love it 🥰
I’m thinking about getting one and I wanna know is it safe to use Clorox wipes to wipe there boards??
can we use a cats cibble but we make sure that there are ingredients that are good for the ferret?
how do you clean a room if you have to use pledge and other chemicals? if they have sensitive respiratory systems?
I love your videos
is it okay to have incense burning if your ferrets are in another room?
Can i use baby powder on him? It might help with the smell as well.
Can you tell me what pads you are using. I also use pads but have to add paper towels to add lenth to them. Thanks
@@sophialeblanc7930 I’ve switched my ferrets to raw. HFF is outdated with an unbalanced soup recipe.
...perhaps because ferrets tend to hide their surplus food....
Do you have a video on how you did you wall of tunes? Its awesome and would love to do something similar!
I'm thinking of getting a ferret soon, can you recomended some good fabric detergents and some fabrics I Shouldnt use for ferrets 😄
Tips and tricks on how to get your ferrets energy out? I live in Nevada so it's WAY to hot to put my ferret out in his play pen during the day!
That's a great idea for a video! Thanks for sharing :)
My dad and mum said no to having it in my room bc of the smell what do I do?
We just bought a ferret on Saturday so we are still learning. But my husband made a comment about the smell and how I need to up my Scentsy game {I'm a consultant) I have not used my Warmers at all since buying her because I cannot find any solid answers. Is melting wax harmful to ferrets? She is just little and has had some tummy troubles from the stress of coming into a new home. We are also trying to litter train so she's going in a few different corners in her cage so her pooping all over I'm sure doesn't help even though we are trying to stay on top of it and only keep some poo to put in her boxes to encourage her to go in there.
How did you make wall tunnels
Can I use candles or incense? Are they toxic to ferrets as well?
Beeswax candles are ok, but stay away from essential oils, candles, fragrances, and incense. They have sensitive respiratory systems and cats & ferrets cannot process essential oils the way we do (it can be toxic to them).
Can i give my ferrets freeze dried food like duck chiken and rabit it activates with water ive been reasearching ferrets for 2 years turned 13 2 days ago im planing to wwit to get 11,000 for my axolotel and ferret so when i do get them ik i will have the money started up
I only knew that your ferret was moose once I watched this.
Oh man I should totally do a video introducing Moose huh?
@@TheModernFerret yep=w=
Also, I can't really tell what the white ferry's name is. Or do you have two or something? So far my guesses are Edward, Ember and Amber ;-; thanks for all the help though! Scooter I can help a bit better with everything that I've learned, especially the bath, he'd jump out and scratch me and my brother. Ow
I talk alot ;-; sorry-
Is the dried beet pulp ok? I have to Wysong so, I think it’s ok, right?
I am getting a free range only ferret from the RSPCA, is free range good?
Free range or free roam usually means that they have never lived in a cage.
You will have to make extra sure your house is ferret-proofed! And you will not want to keep them in a cage all day, you will want to continue their free-roam lifestyle, but you can still train them to sleep in a cage!
@@TheModernFerret i have a large play fence to keep it contained when I'm at school or at night and I would let it out for the rest of the day
@@TheModernFerret And also, the tube system in the background of your vids, what kind of tubes are they?
And do they ship to England?
@@TheModernFerret also, thanks for replying, love your vids :)
Wow thank you!I just got my ferret yesterday shes a baby and her name is sushi😂thank you!!!
i hope you and her have a fun time together !!
My sable boy starts to stink behind his ears like me lol is this something that should be worried about?
i still don't get it i mean what do you do when a ferret has a tatoo in the ear or the paw
Is there any type of candle or anything at all i can use to get a good scent in the house? I know you said plug ins can be toxic!
Sure! Beeswax candles seem to be nontoxic for pets. Also an air purifier!
Great video, very helpful
Just got Freddie, hes still intact and being uk has his glands ,
I've a few things to alter after seeing your vid
Great share! Reading the internet it seems like the smell of ferrets is the worst in the world. With these tips I feel a bit more comfortable considering ferrets as pets 🥰. I mean I've kept rats pretty much odorless applying the same tips as in this video.
I really do like your videos. They are a good source of information about ferret percentshit.
Please tell me where you got the tubes in your background
Can you use baby powder on a ferret? Petco told me to use talc free baby powder to help reduce smell a little
In a year late to the game here in comments - I wouldn’t take the advice of a pet store employee unless they own, or have owned ferrets.
What can I feed my ferret other then kibble?
Look up raw diet for ferrets, kibble will kill them in the long run!
