  • This is the third of my "Smart Home" series, and we tackle the installation and set-up of the Nest X Yale Door Lock. I test the functions including remote operation using the Nest App, and get it working with Google Assistant through the Google Home Mini.

Thanks for this video on how to unbox and install the Nest x Yale lock. This was a very helpful and informative video. I ran into one issue when installing, I had everything installed properly but when I attempted to lock the door remotely I would get an error message "Door cannot lock", but it was actually locked. After several attempts and uninstalling and re-installing I realized that I had to chisel out and hollow out the hole in the deadbolt catch. Just wanted to add that if someone else in running into the same issue but they've installed everything properly they need to check the deadbolt catch and probably need to chisel it deeper and hollow out the hole so that the Nest x Yale deadbolt will not be blocked and can fully lock into place.

Good advice and thanks for sharing. Yes, if the deadbolt cannot fully extend, it will cause a that fault.

Thank you! This was so helpful and detailed. Especially the part about scanning two QR codes. The physical installation was relatively easy but I spent way too much time trying to get this installed properly on the Nest app. Your video saved the day.

The only reason I clicked on this video was to see how you coneected the lock to the app. But that was the one part you skipped. Its also the part people are having the most trouble with :*(

Steve, I had trouble yes, and if I knew what I did to make it work I would have told my audience. I just kept trying and it connected. I can't explain the wild world of the internet, and how all those packets of data decide to, or not to talk to each other.

@@theinternetelectrician I had trouble with setting up the connect. I had to call Google home support. He had trouble. Ultimately we just started all the way over:
      - Delete Nest App (probably unnecessary but at this point we weren’t taking any chances)
      - Press and hold the button on Nest Connect until yellow light shows (we did this to reset/reboot the Connect unit)
      - Reinstall and sign into Nest App from the App Store
      - Select Add +Product within the Nest App
      - Scan QR code (I was standing next to my WiFi)
      - It detected the WiFI and was successful.
      - Then I plugged it into an outlet.
I pressed and released the button quickly to see the blue light turn green and then go out. The green light to my eyes is almost indiscernible to the blue
Why did the install go poorly? I’m guessing two things went wrong :
      1) the first time I attempted this I think it got setup perfectly but the Installation instructions prompted me to test connectivity when unplugged. I think the unit was plugged in and connected so I started to unplug it and press/hold the button (I wasn’t supposed to hold the button, only press it) to see the lights change... This test was just confusing and a step that was out of sequence. And it offered no troubleshooting when the light was yellow instead of green.
2)?The biggest cause for my issue was probably because I held down the button on the nest connect during the test connectivity and reset the unit. My Nest App showed the unit as added but the unit was test and not connected so I think/guess this was where everything went haywire.

The question is when you have a nest yale and door like that they break the window how to avoid from unlocking it if there were to break the window and open it from the inside

    • @patrickm2663
      @patrickm2663 4 роки тому +1

Get a new door without glass...lol. But again, will you replace all the windows in your home to wooden panels so that they don’t break a window to get in? What if they use wood chisels to get through you wooden panel windows?!?! So many “What ifs” 😂🤣😅.
safety and security will always have its limitations. That’s why you use a variety of tools to help prevent bad situations as much as you can (I.e. monitored security system, cameras, sound alarms, motion detectors, etc.). In the end, nothing can prevent a burglar to try getting in your house if they’ve target it!

Hey Howard. Sorry to hear your experience has been so poor with this. Please know that I'm not a paid endorser of this product. Bought it myself and did the video just for content reasons. I will say that I have had almost no issues with mine at all, and I've had it installed in 2 locations in 2 different countries over the last several years. I've changed the batteries about 3 times over the history and at those times I worried that it would lose it's mind and have to be re-programmed, but it always comes back to life. I would complain to them as you must have a faulty unit. Or needs a firmware update, or something? Anyways, thanks for watching and commenting with your experience with it.

kieran beneski they provide 2 terminals to touch a 9v battery to provide the power to operate the lock should that happen. I keep a battery stashed outside just in case, but change the batteries twice a year on the same schedule as your smoke detectors and this should never happen.

Any help you need with that you can email me at terry@electrical-online.com and I'll do what I can. Apps can be frustrating, and sometimes there is no explanation as to why they don't work right away. Then you try again, and it works! That's what happened to me with this installation, I spent an hour or so screwing around with it, swearing, cursing, then suddenly, all worked. No click bait from me. I'm the real deal.
