- Topic for this video is a category of alloy steels that achieve very high strength levels with a simple heat treatment after the manufacture of the part. For the full transcript, click here:

These alloys are called "Maraging" steels. MAR from martensite and AGEING for how they develop strength.
Conventional steel alloys like 4340 ,that can achieve comparable strength levels have a minimum carbon content of point 4 % and require a high temperature austenitizing step followed by rapid quenching and then a final tempering to develop their strength. Needless to say, this process can be very troublesome in many part configurations. With these carbon levels any welding requirement can be very problematic.
Maraging steels simplify the heat treatment since they require only a single step low temperature heat treatment with no drastic "Quench".

I actually came here from another engineering video that illustrated penetrations of afpsds on different materials. Maraging metals seemed to fare the best. I am a metalworker by trade having welded and worked with different wear and armor plating such as hardox and bizalloy for industrial and military applications. After nearly 30 years in the trade I still feel like an idiot when it comes to these specifications.
Crazy how many different specs there are and what they all mean. It's important if you have questions to always speak to a person who really understands metallurgy, Those are few and far between.
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the video, is Maraging 300 or 350 machinable in Marage condition and can it be used for manufacturing of bolts?
Thanks
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
What is the difference between maraging and precipitation hardening? Reynolds uses maraging to describe its 953 tubing and precipitation hardening to describe its 931 tubing. From what I've read, I don't understand what the differences between these two terms are.
Terms are very similar. Maraging materials tend to be formable in the solution annealed condition.
In this instance your bike frame mfg is using the term that is commonly used with the specific alloy.
What is the price difference of Maraging Steel vs Mild Steel. I know different steels for different stuff. I just want to know what we are looking at.
Maraging Steel is exceptionally expensive. It's comprable to a lead to gold comparison almost. Literally mild steel is a buck a pound maybe more maybe less. Maraging might start at $40/Pound. It's a large gap between those costs.
@@MichlinMetals Thank you for letting me know. Most companies don't take the time to let you know in the comment sections about price. Subscribed.
How about marauder steel?
Not too sure about that type! We've never worked w/steel w/such a COOL name tho...
I need 400 sq m of 18" thick maraging 300 for my dreadnaught.
That's going to be a little costly, strong and space worthy but costly. Also, totally possible ;) Thanks for watching. Best of luck.
Does this come in 20 mil sheets?
Not likely, sheet product could likely be specially produced at higher quantities but nothing in the shelf.
@@MichlinMetals actually it is made into sheets as well. But not commercially available. These are used in aerospace industry.
