You could use some 80/20 extrusion for the fence, its VERY straight. That's what I plan to do for my brothers table saw. Looking to build a very level and flat work table.

I purchased a piece of aluminum stock that is 1/4" thick and 3 inches wide. One piece is 8 ft. long, the other is 4 ft. long. I secure the alum. to the piece in question or to a jig and use the aluminum as a straight edge along the fence.

Good question. It's a bit a of Chicken and Egg situation. First you need a piece long enough, easily available from a timber merchant or suppliers. Then leave it for long enough to make sure it's well seasoned. To get a straight edge on it, a combination of long steel rule and looking down the edge should highlight areas that need to be flattened. Alternative you could use a string line. Any high spots can be hand planed. Cheers

But the blade in a table saw is not exactly perpendicular to the table surface. So how can the edge be square?

Easy peasy...take a square rule butted against the blade to check for alignment, that will guarantee a 90 degree and square angle, adjust as needed.

This is a nice technic. I've used it for smaller timber. Thing is your fence needs to be twice as long as your timber. Then I switchted to screwing a very straight piece of ply to the timber on a non sighted edge.

Hi Lucas, Yes the fence has much longer than the timber, theoretically twice as long. When you have quite a few (not so long) pieces to do it saves having to screw a reference board to each piece. Having said that, screwing a straight edge on is what I did just the other day when I needed a straight edge from some waney edge larch boards to make some long window sills.
