Great job with a band saw, circular saw and a table saw with a fence. Genius....and rich.
6 years ago you made a video that would save my project today. Thanks!
Damn it feels good to be a plankster.
+crunchb3rry looooooooool
I was thinking the same thing!!!!
well played....
haha, nice *virtual high five*
+crunchb3rry
Planksters are rebels. They are always going against the grain.
Oh thats an awesome job eric! Like my father would say.....free is damn reasonable!! Also a second note as i was looking behind you at the garage doors i cant tell if they are insulated or not but by the looks of the steel sricking out they are not insulated. You should ask your parents if you can get some foam sheeting the thickness of inside the steel brace and cut the pieces to fit inside each cavity of both garage doors to help keeo the warmth in while you are working in there when its cold. I have done this for many friends and works very well. You dont have to tape or glue them in. Just cut a little oversized and bend them in and they will stay put! Good luck!!
This was a darn good video
good to see you back. you should square up one side only till you find a use for the board. you might find a use for the natural edge on the other of the board.
Good to see him taking an interest in woodworking. Reminds me of back in the day when I took wood shop in Jr. High and High School, I had that same enthusiasm. Never stop learning...
Eric, you did a great job with the videography! Nice tip on squaring up irregular wood slab! That walnut is going to be great to work with except for that darn knot. Thanks for sharing.
the knot add character if you work with it rite. i love working with knots
Personally, I would have made that first cut by securing the metal farther from the edge and then cutting in the opposite direction with the circ saw. That way you have a lot more contact with the board (5 inches versus just a couple), so there is less chance of tipping, which you definitely did near the end of your cut.
he would need to get a shallower straight edge guide
So awesome to see someone so young doing this! Keep it up kid!
I would suggest that the end grains not be trimmed up. Leave them on until you are ready to use the board so that the cracking will be more on what you will cut off rather on what you wanted to use.
Mark Harding
Or he can seal the end with glue. But a wide board like this more likely will bend just by the changes of humidity.
Good job mister! Liked how you pointed out that you wanted to wait on planing it out until you figured out what you are going to be doing with it.
Great video. Breathe of fresh air. I'm 69 and for some good reason I've been watching a lot of videos on Planer thicknessers today. For some weird reason people who do videos on woodworking seem to have shitty tastes in backing music. Some of it just nasty, yours fitted just right.
Eric, great video, Like you I don't have great heat in my shop. Hope someone will get a small space heater for you. Thanks for taking the time to make a video.
nice to see someone of your age with a respect for safety
Good to see you back............
if it's that cold in there during parts of the year grab a heat lamp and turn it on high, like ten minutes before you start...works for me every day!
great video..some people might say the square metal tubing wasnt the best choice to use for a reference line,,but i guess it doesnt matter..good job
Well done Eric.
Well done. You have a bright future in carpentry
Learned what I need to square live edge mahogany from a smart kid a quarter of my age awesome I love UA-cam
Nice job guy.. thanks for sharinig.. God Bless you.
Good video, a simple router jig would allow you to create one perfectly flat surface on the face of the board. you could then run your circular saw off that flat face followed by your table saw. you would then have the surfaces flat and square with eachother.
3 of the 4 surfaces ***
Great work Eric. Very easy and perfect. Thanks
Nice vid! I’m gonna try your method tomorrow. I’m making cutting boards
All these grown ass adults making crap videos and this kid is not only the most informative, but the most relatable. I have to unplug my heater to run my saw too. lol
Thanks Eric that was very helpful
Good vid on squaring up natural edge boards.
I love single cut boards as apposed to joining multiple pieces together. Really keeps the grain looking natural. Loved the video.
Keep up the good work, Eric
First off, Go Wings!
How about using a track saw instead of the square tubing & circular saw? The reason I ask is that I got one for sheet products cutting last year and wonder if this would be another job I could use it on.
Eric, love your videos. Nice work buddy
Thanks so much Eric. This was very informative and concise! Thank you.
Nice work with the wood, I'll use a few of those tips. Nice work with the video too.
Good video man
Nice job young man
Thumbs up for the "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" background music
glad im not the only one to notice that!
Jeez Eric, where do you live man, Antarctica? In live in Queensland, Australia so I am unaccustomed to seeing thick clothes like that except in wildlife programs about polar bears and walruses!
Nice job, Sir.
good job young man, keep up the good work.
Slick! I always assumed you needed the table saw first. And, I have some steel tubing similar to yours that I use for bar clamping boards together or I could use the skill saw and the guide I thought was only good for cutting ACROSS plywood. Wanna sell the walnut?
nice age to be a woodworker....spirit man :)
Wonderful tip, thanks for sharing.
Great, easy and simple! Grats!
Nice Job Eric, Some Great Tips
Just my opinion, but I would run my circular saw the opposite direction so you have more of the table the of the circular saw in contact with the surface of the board. This will ensure a square edge and keep the saw from dropping as you're cutting.
How do you now in 2:22 is vertical the cut don you use a level?
A good idea shared well, props.
Very nice.
I like the fact that you are showing interest in woodworking. But know this, a jointer is to flatten one side and square.an edge. If you took 4 of those boards identical to what you just made and tried to get a square box out of it, there would be a variance somewhere, and it won't be square. Get your self a few hand planes like a #4,#7, and a block plane and learn how to use winding sticks to sight down boards and remove the high spots. Keep on learning no matter what.
Great Job Eric!
Great Video!!
smart way to do it
I see some one suggested a space heater I would not recommend this at all wood dust is extremely flammable and on my insurance for my commercial shop they are banned. I would however suggest a log burner as you can then heat the shop with all your many off cuts.
I like the fact that you are doing something with wood at your age. However I would like to give you some constructive advice and am by no means bad mouthing your efforts. I would have left that piece of wood alone at this point and not have cut it until I had a use for it. I know it`s fun to make a nice piece of wood but by cutting it you have left it open to moisture problems. By the time you want to use it chances are that you will find it has cupped, warped or split. Then you will find out how much you need that jointer that you dismissed as unnecessary. Also, one square corner does not make a square board. That being said, I really like your attitude and spirit. I can see that if you continue you will have a successful career as a woodworker. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Good job, kid. Keep it up.
Is this background music from damn it feels good to be a gangster? If so can't believe you're old enough to even know that very nice 🙂
Keep up the great work
Nice vid man!! +1 sub
Always a band saw. I was involved in a freak accident with one and no longer use them. Was hoping for a darn video without one.
'Squaring up lumber' means that the faces of the board are jointed and planed, and that the edges are straightened, jointed and ripped. This makes the faces parallel to each other, and the edges square to the faces, and parallel to each other. The cross-cuts have nothing to do with 'squaring up lumber.' In all seriousness, you cannot do without a jointer if you take the power tool route with woodworking. There are other power tool ways of flattening boards, all of which are not very efficient. If you want to work with waned / cupped / bowed / twisted boards, get a jointer! Or get busy learning hand plane techniques...including plane iron sharpening.
Any board too wide for a standard sized jointer (if available) should IMHO be flattened by hand planing (or with a router and suitable jig, or by whatever means possible) before any other machining,
Running a badly cupped board through a table saw can yield some surprising results- none of them good, pretty, safe or desirable.
Ant Mallett You are correct, but he's a kid FFS. You were probably still on sucking Mama's milk at his age.
Robert Erickson His age has nothing to do with it. I was trying to help by correcting his misunderstanding. I would have said the same thing to my son - otherwise how can one learn? Do you say to a teacher who is correcting a child, 'FFS, he's only a kid!' And then go on to insult him and his mother ?Added to that, running cupped or bowed lumber on hobby grade machinery is bad practise and dangerous. Your insult is puerile and probably anecdotal.
Ant Mallett Damn. Haha.
+Ant Mallett You need to look up the meaning of the word anecdotal.
+dtp A usually short narrative of an interesting, amusing, or biographical incident. My emphasis on biographical.
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta, Nice video kid!
Good stuff!
Nof gong f
Nice vid I would like u to post more vid
It's great to see a young person into wood working instead of a lump on the couch playing video games. Keep up the good work!
Many thanks. 👍😷🇬🇧
I would have kept that live edge intact instead of cutting it off, it looked nice.
Great job Eric, another nice video! Think about asking Santa for a GRRRRRIPPER! They are on sale at lowes for $40.00. The Lowes in Rochester Hills where I am only had one left but there are several other stores around. Keep up the great work! Dave in R.H.
I kept expecting for "damn it feels good to be a gangsta..." but it never kicked in.
+MaghoxFr Same here. I kept saying it in my head though.
i used to have the same problem blowing fuses, until i installed a new breaker. Are u and electrical cord shop or outlets?
You want to try that question again, 5 years later?
Nice tips there Eric. I think its time for a crosscut sled build video :)
man it feels good to cut lumber
why would you need to use the circular saw first? Would it be okay to just use the table saw straight ahead?
+lilsis no you need a fairly straight edge to butt up to the fence of the table saw. Otherwise the wood can try to drift and bind up in the blade.
Its good you've used a track to start with a straight reference edge, and its good you have pointed out about the safety of not using gloves. I think the title is a bit odd because it leads the viewer to think you are going to do a task which normally requires a jointer or router - which you are not. You've just trimmed the waney edges off a board which may still contain twist and won't be uniform (top and bottom are not yet plane). There are ways to actually make something four faces square with just a table saw with a sliding table or sled, but this isn't it. Title at time of writing this: "The Easiest Way to Square Up Lumber | No Jointer or Router Required"
You could have a go at making a skateboard out of it?
Hi again eric i just noticed nick ferry put out a video on how to insulate garage doors. Kinda funny this come up after telling you about it but check it out as this would be perfect for you and very easy! Good luck!!
Love the music. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
+Maineiac Creations Office Space.
Find your center then square up off it to cut your edges.
Chopping board ? Would of look cool if it had a bit of bark on it and make it rustic
Now try and do it if the board is twisted.
Thank you, too many of these videos use lumber that's near perfect too begin with. Most of the wood I have looks just like the piece Eric is working on.
Boy do your fingers look cold!
Damb it feels good to be a gangster.
Did you use to have a gaming Chanel
What fence/table saw combo do you use?
do you live in michigan
cool i do to im a 9 year old wood worker that also plays hockey i play for a team called the bulldogs. I love your videos and i think you should make something like a lawn chair. thanks for responding by.
If you haven't already, install 20 amp breakers. It will save a lot of running around. Great job on the Walnut.
haha, you did blow a fuse, yes you did :) haha
good video next time i would plane the board first so you can cut the snipe out on the ends. Save more wood that way but really a good video
still needs jointed and planed though
you really say darn a lot!
How old is this kid now?
aaaaaahhhh blewww a fuuussseeee
thank you from saipan..
The song sounds like a mix of Gheto Boys "Damn it feels good to be a gangsta" and Everclear's "Wonderful." I really love it.
3:52 looks like a rectangle, bro....
Derp!!!
Clutch
personally I thought it was a Savage Garden song....
It's all warped on the flat sides dude! You will need to flatten it if you are to make anything useful out of it!
"No Jointer or Router Required"..
What you will need to have laying around is -
- a Bandsaw
- Circular Saw
- And table saw..
Tyler McReynolds go fuck yourself
