ASC T-128 Tornado Siren Test New Berlin, WI

- This is my second (and greatly improved) recording of the American Signal T-128 located behind city hall in New Berlin, WI. This was a weekly test of alert mode for tornado warnings. New Berlin tests every Saturday at noon, but they test different sirens each week.
Being my second recording of this siren, I wanted to correct all the things that were wrong with the first video. I brought my tripod and popped some fresh batteries into the camera this time. I personally feel the reslts to be much improved.
Enjoy!
I love the quality of this video. Great job on it.
These are the same sirens the city of Omaha, NE uses now. LOUD. I was working on a building downtown last spring in a boom lift about eye (or ear)level with thing appx 60ft away. Couldn't even breathe well with that kind of frequency. Ears hurt for the entire day afterwards.
P-50's were made by ACA. Under ASC, it was the T-135AC. But yeah, those are amazing sirens. Easily my favorite.
I've never seen this type of siren before. The sound is lovely!
There are actually a bunch of these around town. You might be hearing a different one.
This is what THIS ONE sounds like. It's actually a little high pitched compared to New Berlin's other ones. I've heard lower ones on different recordings, too. They are a good and effective siren, though.
New Berlin is in southeastern Waukesha County, in Southeastern WI. It's about 15 minutes west of downtown Milwaukee.
Yep, you're right. There is a power fluctuation. Somebody mentioned that on one of my other T-128 videos, and suggested it might be the batteries draining down. I'm not really sure if they run power off the batteries for testing, but that would account for the drop in pitch.
The T-128 is Alot Better than the 2001
1. it has a Lower, further Carrying Pitch that doesnt Annoy you.
2. it has a Better Design
3. it doesnt seem to have those Technical Problems that plague the 2001
Thumbs up to ASC for making a Great Siren! :-)
I agree this is definately one of your nicest recordings.
Unfortunately, yes. New Berlin replaced their last two Aletronic RE1600's with T-128's last summer. They all got scrapped too, much to the disappointment of myself and a friend who asked if we could save them, but they were already gone. There is still an Alertronic siren in service in St. Francis, WI which I'll be looking to record sometime this year.
This is probably one of your best videos in my opinion. Love the quality of the video. That wind-up sure must turn heads.
@theogt821 That's because this siren puts out a different wave form than the thunderbolt. This puts out a mix of sawtooth and sine waves, while the thunderbolt put out pure sine waves. They both travel very well (WAY better than square waves, like the modulator gives out) but both feel different. This siren is definitely louder than the thunderbolt. Not as loud as the ACA Hurricane though.
The siren's rotation is approximately 2 rpm. This was a 3 minute test and it did 7 full turns. It's a bit odd that after the siren shut down the head rotated to pretty much the same spot. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not.
@JustInn014 No, all the Alertronics are gone as of a few years ago. Most of New Berlin's sirens are fairly well hidden away from roads.
Yep. They're bigger and have a wider projector, but other than that, they're about the same. Just looking at one, most people wouldn't know the difference. I plan to record whenever it gets tested next, probably next spring.
Absolutely! I think their sound carries better as well.
Yep. Not a cloud in the sky as you can see. It was a very nice day to film this siren.
@zatu97 The U.S. primarily uses rotational sirens because they offer far greater range than ominidrectional sirens. Rather than have sound disperse in all directions at a limited distance, sound is concentrated in one direction for farther distance, then rotated to cover 360 degrees. Greater effective range per siren means fewer sirens to pay for and maintain.
As far as I know, alert is the only signal used, and that would be for tornadoes. It is capable of performing the alert and attack signals just like any other mechanical siren.
what days does your tornado siren get tested? here in Waukesha, Wi, during the summertime it's every Friday at 9:30am.
@form109
They still make the Cyclone, too. And it's been around since '67. And DAMN it's powerful. it's dual tone, too, so the sound carries on for miles
That's not an Alertronic. It is Hales Corners' ACA P-50, also known as an ASC T-135. It's the same model of siren as the one in Milwaukee in one of my other videos. It's still there, but I haven't recorded it yet.
Oh, goody, you're back! How exactly would an electronic siren produce sound with no speaker drivers? "Morely a mechanical siren"? What does that mean? You don't mean fully mechanical & not electronic, do you? How would this T-128's wind down count as being "regulated like ll other sirens"?
Do you fully understand the differences between how sound is produced in an electronic siren versus a mechanical siren?
And, since you'd be the person to ask, are Thunderbolts electronic also?
How far is New Berlin from the Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, WI area?
Also... Andover, MN just repalced their sirens with these
This T-128 rotates pretty slow. I love the wind up!
Technically speaking, I don't. I believe it's half the system one week, half the next. I drove out to record this T-128 the week previous to the activation in this video. It didn't activate, only ones further to the North did. I came back the next week and the video shows what happened. But, New Berlin does always test part of the system weekly.
@theogt821 You're supposed to hear these outside, not inside. Whelen sirens give off sine/sawtooth waves too. They've been around for a long time and know what they are doing. While I think Sentry is the best siren manufacturer today, Whelen comes in second for me.
Yeah, you can feel the soundwaves vibrating in your chest when they point at you. I don't find them to be too bad with a pair of ear plugs in, or your index fingers if you're in a pinch.
These ASC units sound so much better than the Federal 2001s.
I saw a photo of this siren on the siren archive; also Archon's old video of it is on there too. have you seen my video of a T-128?
Okay, since you're an expert, here's a few questions for you or your "friend tat works for asc": How many speaker drivers does this "electronic" siren have and how many watts are they rated for? How can its drivers handle a full wind-down? What other signals does it produce and why can't it sound voice messages? Be sure to get back to me on that.
About 2 miles. New Berlin has excellent siren coverage.
How do you know which siren is going to be tested if they test different ones each week? In Evansville, they turn all of them on for the weekly test.
@RamFett That last sentence is true. The newer 2001's that Federal manufactures have so little sound I've heard some people can't even hear them. The Thunderbolt 1000T in my neighborhood used to hurt my ears, and the T-128 doesn't, which is what I based my assessment on. I think a T-135 might be better yet than this one as 135 decibels is even louder.
you know, the funny thing I've noticed about the T-128 is that the pitch seems to drop during its activation. It sounds at a higher note at the beginning, and has dropped a bit before the wind down. Still like this siren though :)
Same as any other electromechanical siren. An electric motor spins a rotor which forces air through stator ports producing sound. Because of their appearance, a lot of people believe them to be electronic but they are not.
There's a photo of this t-128 with an allertronic standing next to this t-128 on that radio tower. Is the allertronic gone?
If you can, could you please try to get the Calhoon park t128? thanks either way
ME. Got a problem with that?
I think they're superior to 2001's, if for no other reason than the lower pitch. It carries farther and sounds better. Where I work, I'm quite often outside for noon tests on Saturdays and I'm able to listen to several different municipalities' siren systems in Eastern Waukesha County. I can hear T-128's much better from farther away than 2001's that are actually closer.
I added them in editing on Microsoft Movie Maker. It's also what I use to compress my videos to fit with UA-cam's size requirements.
UA-cam has size requirements?
are there any other signals for this siren? or is alert is all that it does.
That's partly due to crappy audio. These sirens produce the sound mechanically.
Unfortunatly no. The loudest siren to ever be built was the Chryler Air Raid siren. Tho loudest siren in production is the ASC T-135.
This was posted on my 8th birthday!
Whelen beats the hell out of anything currently made by Federal Signal.
Thank you.
How do these new sirens work compared to the old ones? I know there're electronic now but that's all I know lol
This model works like an Allertor. It has a mini fan in the center of it
and how do T-128's work?
It's not one of my favorites. The audio is rather crappy, it doesn't very well represent what the real siren sounds like.
But thank you for the compliment regardless.
???
I SAW THIS SIREN ON GOOGLE EARTH!
@lilaj34siren If it was a dual tone Tbolt then the undertone probably shook your ears and made it seem harsher. But this siren is a lot louder. It's just not as harsh on the ears cause of the fact that it is single tone.
By the way, try standing near a Sentry 40v2t when it's going off. My vision literally started to blur and my chest was shaking cause I was dumb enough to stand roughly 50 feet away from it. THAT siren is definitely a lot louder AND harsher on the ears than a Tbolt.
Indy The Great union and the more to you
GETTING CLOSE TO THE INTEREST!!!
Why turn the sirens in the United States?
I don't think you understand.
Controls and radio receiver equipment aside, this is a mechanical siren. An electric motor spins a rotor inside of a stator, physically chopping air to produce sound.
Electronic sirens use tone generators and speaker drivers to amplify and broadcast electronically produced signals or voice messages.
By those definitions, T-128's and the rest of the Tempest series are mechanical sirens, not electronic.
You would be wise to remove your phone number.
why is it named New BERLIN???
Yes, you ARE incorrect, because American Signal Corporation's most current and popular line is the Tempest series, in which all entries are ELECTROMECHANICAL sirens. That would include the Tempest-128 in this video. They employ rotors and stators, NOT electronic speakers to produce sound. Again, check your facts (go to their website) and please don't argue about subjects you clearly know very little about.
One thing I don't understand, this is a test to see if it works or what?
Oh, and another thing, what if the real thing happens during the test, how will the citizens know the difference?
Thanks.
the rotator motor is tiny
they have one of those at my camp for missing camper alerts. its fucking terrifying
Thanks.
At the end of the cycle, I zoomed to the beginning of the video and this siren didn't go back to the exact same position.
my town just replaced one of our aging Thunderbolt 1000T's with a T-128...
@twotailedavenger i hear the Cyclone is only Made on Special Request and Very Expensive.
and yes the Cyclone is Powerful,it might only be 125 Decibels, but i guarentee you'll hear it above a Federal Signal 2001...even though they have 5 Decibels more output, their High Pitch will Fade much quicker.
Dickens my cat is scared of all sirens ! We never had a tornado where I live !
It sounds weird right when it starts up then it sounds normal
It's really not hard at all (even I managed to figure it out). PM me if you wish to discuss it further.
we have like 7 of these in montgomery the only other siren you see is a 2001 and they are not really IN montgomery.
Bring back the older Thunderbolt sirens. They were a great deal louder than this piece of crap. We have one in our neighborhood, I hate it.
No arguments there.
I've always thought it looks like a bisected orange.
@gregg53186 In a way, I am too. They didn't have a particularly nice sound and weren't as reliable.
Haha it looks kinda like there's a flower in the horn now doesn't it?
@RamFett im hoping your wrong....i stood by a tbolt and that thing blasted my ears i had to go to the hospitial
Ow
lol i litterally live less than 1000 yds from this siren
@RamFett and Deutschlad is there something but not our sirens are also loud I.
In the USA are also very beautiful we need those in Germany also ;)
@theogt821 That will never happen. Thunderbolts were NOT louder...yes they sound better, but that's not the same as being louder. And T-128's aren't crap, they're better than anything Federal's putting out these days.
Yes.
it kinda does.
*CURRENTLY!
Eclipse, 2001's and Mods are all crap. Thunderbolts were great for their time, as were so many of their other old sirens, including the 3T22 I own. I don't mean to bash the company, but all their current products are inferior, seemingly by design. Whelen and ASC know how to produce sirens with better pitch to carry farther and penetrate far more effectively. Federal and ATI either just don't get it or don't care. That makes them both inferior companies peddling crappy products.
@PhiloAmericana I heard 1 week ago, that i got related in san francisco
Really? A 4 year old T-128 in a municipality that's successfully used three generations of ASC/ACA products for 40+ years will randomly get replaced by some high-pitched Federal Signal piece of shit? I never would have guessed.
Heh heh. That's one way of putting it.
I seen that when I was four in 2024 replaced by a thunderbolt
What?
Yeah, it’s in California I seen that siren when I was four years old and I got replaced by a thunderbolt and it’s at nearby Healdsburg
Err...yes, very good.
Oh my gosh I live in new berlin
@Frefind Because much of America was settled by German immigrants. All of these various immigrants named their settlements and towns after their homes. Which is only natural. So, you will see Berlin, New Berlin, Stuttgart, Paris, etc, etc. Germans made up the largest group of immigrants for America. So, it's only to be expected.
@neosho53059 There is no excuse for your brand of aggressively stupid commenting. You've done it numerous times before on my videos and you don't learn. So just keep it to yourself.
I see a telephone tower
where i leave (Georgia) one of those means that the nuclear plant blew up and we are all f'ed.
Ooooookay.
Radio tower.
@poisonpop666 Same here buddy.

WANT TO SEE THIS SIREN ON GOOGLE EARTH? :)
@@laskothepiggy6353 Sure, i guess
alittle bit old german fake style nice vid
Incorrect. Check your facts before making idiotic statements.
@neosho53059 How exactly is 121 decibels louder than 128? Keep your stupid ass comments to yourself, please.
no like 10.
