  • "I'm going home" or I'm going to home"? "I'm going school" or "I'm going to school?" Why do we use 'to' with some words and not with others? In this English grammar class, I'll teach you many words that don't go with 'to'. This is a mistake that sounds bad to native speakers, so try to learn these words and stop making this mistake! Go here to take a quiz on this lesson: www.engvid.com/when-not-to-us...
    TRANSCRIPT
    "Are you going to home?" "Are you going home?" "Where are you going?" "What are you doing?" You're watching a video. My name's Ronnie. I'm going to teach you one trick. Finally, you will understand why in English, we say "I'm going to school" or "I'm going to work." But when we talk about our beautiful, warm, and cozy home we don't say "to". Why, why, why, I don't know. It's just English, isn't it? I can give you some clues. I'll give you some words. You will get this right away. It will be easy for you to do.
    So if you look at this sentence, "Are you going home?" A very, very big mistake that everyone says will be, "Are you going to home?" And I go, "No, no 'to'. Don't say 'to'. Don't say 'to', no!" Okay, okay, okay, "Are you going home?" Yes, don't say "to", but why? You learned that when you are going someplace, you say "to". For example, "Are you going to bed?" We don't say "to the bed", by the way. We just say bed. "Are you going to bed?" "Are you going to work?" Or you can use the past tense, "Did you go to work?" "Did you go to school?" "Did you go to engvid.com today, and check out a new lesson?" But when you say "home", you do not use "to". So you know the rule, maybe that this is a noun. This is a noun, so when you use going to a place which is a noun, you have to say "to", and then you come along, and you find this beautiful home, and Ronnie freaks out, because you say "to" and then you don't understand why. I don't know but I will give you a list of words that are places. But all of these words on this board, you cannot use with "to". So "are you going abroad?" You cannot ask someone, "Are you going to abroad?" If you look in the dictionary; the dictionary, one of those books. If you look at an online dictionary it'll tell you that these are adverbs of location, whereas the other ones you've learned are nouns.
    But hold on, "home" is a noun. Home is just this big exception going, "No, I am a noun. I don't want to have "to". All of these ones are not proper nouns, they're adverbs of location. Let's go through underground, underneath the surface of the land. If you have ever been to London, there's a big system called the Tube. It's also called the "underground". Most places in the world call it the "underground". In Canada, we call it the subway -- "sub" means "under". So you can say, "I'm going underground. I'm going underground." If you know The Jam -- "Wow, what an amazing band, Ronnie," I know. You will know this song called "I'm Going Underground." Maybe by the magic of video, we'll put on that video for you. "I'm going underground." "I'm going downtown," or you can say "uptown". I would just sing songs for everything, "Uptown Girls" -- little bit of Billy Joel for you. Uptown, downtown -- you don't need the "to". There, here, anywhere, nowhere, somewhere -- you don't need "to". In, inside, out, outside, upstairs, downstairs don't use "to". They're not nouns. They're places.
    One other thing to be very careful about, please, when you say this you want to say "upstairs" and "downstairs." Too many times I hear people say, "I went down-stair." Only one, just one stair, I made it. "I went up-stair." And then what did you do? You just stood there? Wow, don't say "down-stair, up-stair". Please use all of the stairs. Go up, okay? That'll be fun, more exciting. You can fall down the stairs too, that's fun. But again, we don't say "to". "I'm going downstairs." "I'm coming upstairs."
    If you are confused, or if you have ever been confused about when to use "to", the only advice I can give you is please remember this list of words. Once you have remembered this list, you'll go, "Oh that was easy." [That was easy.]" Yes, it was. Thank you, goodbye.

    Can you make a video about when NOT to use "THE"?

    • @sujaymessi
      @sujaymessi 9 років тому +113

      Diana Garcia You use "The" when you refer to something unique and specific. For e.g. The Sun , The City of London or if you are referring to your stuff you lent to your friend few days ago . e.g I want "the" book I gave you last Monday . You want that specific book and not other books you might have given her before .
      You don't use "The" when it is the exact opposite of the above examples.
      A car , An apple , A book . e.g. I want a book to write something . I want to go to a restaurant .
      You don't use "the" when your subject is not unique and specific . In the above statements , you don't care about which book or which restaurant . Same sentences with "the" will be , I want to write something on the book with a red cover . I want to go to the restaurant that serves Italian food.
      Hope this helps :)

    You're awesome Ronnie! As an English instructor, I've been told that I've got a nice personality and effective teaching methods, but after watching one of your vids for the first time about 6 or 7 years ago, I realized how important "personality" is when standing in front of a group of people; it makes them appreciate the language and for some reason makes them more receptive in its acceptance and learning. You're one of my favorite English teachers Ronnie! You're cute, too!❤

      Good illustration Mr. Tariq though the good teacher Roonie didn't provide ur good justification..she said she didn't know!!!!!!?!!. My conclusion is that: though English, is a lovely language, yet, it 'sometimes crazy & illogical
      Ex. If the plural of " box" is boxes .. why ox is oxen.& not oxes .. if the past of read is read pronounced
      /red/..why the past of lead is led. /led/
      We have almost the same consonants' sounds & vowels in both verbs.
      This maybe because it is a produce of multi so different languges. i.e it is , so t speak, a multi hybrid language.

    I am going to Anna’s home
    I am going to her home
    I am going to my home
    I am going abroad
    I am going crazy
    I am going home
    ING indicates something that has already started
    TO indicates a futurity
    So, ‘I am going home’ means that in my mind I am already there because my home is within my emotional sphere.
    But ‘I am going to Anna’s home’ means an intention to go there, an action that may have started but that also says that, Anna’s home is not within my own boundaries.
    I am going abroad
    I am going to France
    I am going oversea
    I am going to Egypt
    Here ING indicates clearly that the action has already started. Indeed, going abroad or oversea is not something that can be done overnight; the journey needs to be prepared; find a ship, a team of sailors, a good captain. While going to London could only mean a horse ride or a day journey by foot.

And only one word "ХУЙ"(khuy) is main in russian. And only one sentence is main: "Ты хуй" or "Ты хуйло". Hey! may be you can help me. I speak English, but I need to know what the word "tho" is. Really I don't understand it :c

    • @AmiPropagator
      @AmiPropagator 8 років тому +7

      Rebecca Bermúdez most likely its short for the word 'though.'

    • @rubensneto1597
      @rubensneto1597 8 років тому

      its a short for the word though like Ami said... Look at the sample "she loved a novel tho' she could not read hard words"

      I'm not an english teacher, however I think "tho" means "you" in old english- note that, in german "you" means "du" so resemblance is striking :)

    • @jwithrowmusic
      @jwithrowmusic 7 років тому +2

      Marek Cichon, I think you mean the word "thou." which mean "you" in old english. Tho is simply an internet/text abbreviation for "though."

    Looks like the list contains places that are not too specific or physical, like "anywhere".
    And home doesn't need to be a place with walls and a roof. Under a bridge can be the home to a homeless guy.
    Maybe this has something to do with it?

      Marcos Silva No, a bed is a specific object. Sure, you can use anything AS a bed, but that doesn't mean that it IS a bed.

      @Snidercouple 7 років тому +16

      Uptown means up as in class so, the fancier, richer, more affluent part of town.

    Actually, in this case "home" is an adverb, not noun.

    A prime example how the use of speech has become 'lazy'.
    If a person said to me that they are going home, I would ask, "To whose home are you going? Are you going to your home, or your parents home, maybe even a friends home!"
    This is why description in a 'statement' is important. I am going to my home, I am going to my parents home, I am going to my friends home' and of course the work home is often interchangeable with the word house... some people do not use the word home to describe where they live as it might be temporary accommodation they live in whilst a Student and their 'home' is in another town or even another country.
    When I am going on the Underground Trains, I do not say 'I am going underground' as it is ambiguous, it can mean several different things. I state I am going 'to' the underground and then it is clear I am catching a train or maybe meeting someone at the Underground Station....!
    Even the other examples given are not strictly accurate, I could say, "I am going to somewhere I have not been before", "I am going to the upstairs bathroom", "I am going to the downstairs basement"
    Statements that contain no description are what lead to confusion and result in lazy speech and on that note, "I am going to nowhere in particular!"

    Wouldn't it simply be easier to say that you must always use 'to' in front of words that can be both nouns and verbs? 'Work' and 'bed' can function as both nouns and verbs; therefore, you need to separate the verb 'going' from the verb 'work', because there are instances where two verbs can be next to one another, like 'doing work'. So, to show that you're referring to the noun, you just say 'going to work'. That's what my brain's been doing all this time. It may be wrong, but it's worked just fine for me thus far.
