For anyone raised on Rapunzel or fairy princesses, long hair was likely the epitome of beauty and femininity. That aesthetic is also consistent with our culture, which usually equates short hair to masculinity. Although we’ve come a long way in terms of accommodating different types of femininity, long hair seems to still be the ultimate femme feature. So, for any woman who chooses to wear her hair short, it’s definitely a statement.
Take, for example, Mila Myles who is a self-identified queer woman who wears her hair short. As an artist, she uses mediums like film and poetry to emulate her experience as a short-haired woman in the queer community.
“When it comes to short hair and women, people only talk about androgyny and masculinity, but in the heteronormative way about feminine or straight women. And I feel like all the straight boys wear queer girl haircuts within a couple of months.” Myles joked.
Artist Meredith Miotke was also met with different reactions when she decided to cut her hair, even though she said she felt excited and empowered by her decision.
She explained. “A lot of people ask me why and sometimes it seems kinda confrontational it’s just - I cut off my hair, it’s not a big deal.”
Whether you choose to keep your hair long or short, there isn’t one single way to express femininity - and more aesthetics are being embraced all the time.

@@nicolettekristie it's crazy because men really judge so harshly when they barley understand how difficult it is to manage hair everyday before school or work . More women complement my buzz cut but when it's a guy they just stare in disbelief. Honestly I could care less what they think but its really annoying to have those stares when it's a personal choice

@@brockcharz2104 assuming it's a good dye job, the correct shade and cut that suits him then yeah, I wouldn't mind. I think long hair looks good on everyone. Women in general do like long hair, but if the man himself is not confident in it, it shows and that's when it becomes unattractive. It's more attractive to do what you want with your hair than to copy what every other man is doing. Also if a woman is demanding that you change your hair because she doesn't like it, you should dump her. At the end of the day hair length is unisex, both men and women grow hair out of their scalps. Men should have more creative freedom when it comes to their appearance.

The phrase “big chop” has traditionally come to represent a milestone moment in the lives of black women who decide to fully embrace their natural hair by cutting off any/all remnants of chemically straightened hair. It is one in many ways that black women actively challenge the narrative in which we never measure up to dominant racist standards of beauty. As such, this video has co-opted and completely watered down the phrase.
1) Policing what black women can and can't say isn't particularly progressive.
2) It don't think you can claim that as tradition, women have been defying gender expectations and racist standards with short hair way before most the natural hair movement became what it is today.
Yeah I agree. We say the big chop because it's a milestone for accepting ourselves and cutting off all of the hate towards our hair that we've been taught. It's like if someone tried to call every birthday they had a quinceanera. That's not a milestone that's linked to anything you just had a birthday like come on now.

The woman conducting the interview is not of a short-haired woman's experience, and there's the chance too she's performing from a pre-decided script. The video is about short hair and beauty, the video is not about loving your natural hair.

I've had my hair in this style since I was a kid. People used to say I looked like a boy or call it an ugly rats nest on my head. But a few days ago a guy told me my hairstyle looked pretty. I think it's so cool that short hair can be seen as feminine and beautiful in its own right. I kind of keep my hair like this for convenience sake because I'm lazy, it's easy to take care of but I don't have to put much into maintaining it. It's just kind of a chick mullet.

Wow I didn’t know short hair on women was controversial in any way anymore.
Ever since I chopped my hair short I have only gotten positive reactions and quite a lot of compliments not only on my hair but just me in general after I cut it which I didn’t really get to much of before.
The only one that said anything was my dad but now he thinks that short hair looks great on me and he doesn’t have a negative stigma towards short hair it’s just that I’ve had long hair all my life and the new hairstyle made me look different.
But according to everyone I’ve met the different look suits me better.
I’m currently growing it out to a bob and it’s a very short bob at the moment but I doubt I’ve ever grow it longer then to my shoulders ever again.

Some cultures cut their hair off after a death of a loved one to signify a new beginning. I cut my hair off bc it refreshes me and tends to give me a new mindset into what will be next in my stage of life. I'm going to cut my hair soon to clear my mind and form a different perspective as I enter into a new stage of growth in life. Just something I've made up bc it sounds good and I like monitoring and experimenting growth within myself and on my head 😁

I have a bob that goes to my cheekbones with an undercut. But I would say I'm feminine as I wear dresses every day.
That is exactly what I had earlier last year. My hair is growing out now (it is at my chin except for the back because of the undercut I had) but I'm glad I'm not the only one😄
I'm similar to you except I keep my hair in a permanently half-grown-out pixie cut (kind of a chick mullet I guess you could call it, I keep my hair short because it's easy to maintain) but I've always been a girly girl, I wear dresses and high heeled shoes as my casual wear (but I usually opt for wedges or chunky heel because I'm a klutz). In a lot of ways I'm even more feminine than most girls with long hair. I also love light floral scented perfumes. I love smelling pretty. Probably the only "tomboy" thing about me is that I love playing video games, especially Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

My hair is short for function and comfort to be honest. Im a woman of science (cybersecurity grad) i dont need hair in my face all the time. Also my hair is horrendously thick so during the warmer months if its long it collects all sorts of nastiness
Cool. Go for it. I think it can look good on some people, but it's like long hair on men. It just doesn't work for most, but on some it's super cool.

Exactly! That was what I commented as well. Butch lesbians never wear their hair long because they want to appear more masculine. They also do not dress feminine. The white woman also did not seem very feminine either. This was dumb and made no sense. Why not focus on feminine women who dress and act feminines, are straight and still chose to challenge beauty norms and cut their hair short?

imo femininity is a construct & it can be whatever you feel it is, like a cis man can look like a guy and feel feminine in the same way a cis woman in a dress can (eg. a lot of drag queens). people of any gender looking however way can ‘be feminine’ on the inside but just not express it as a personal preference. so as a cis girl i can wear a tie & suit & feel feminine but maybe not come across that way to others in my social environment, but it doesn’t change how i feel inside

All the mothers I know cut their hair short after having kids. It's far more practical because it requires less upkeep and toddlers don't pull on it. Short hair doesn't signal disagreeableness, but a willingness to put vanity aside to better care for those around them, and if that doesn't describe a good mother, I don't know what does.

Men can have long hair too. You threw in "pink" to the imaginary love interest scenario. But for example, my husband grew a beard. He can grow it or shave it. Not everyone loves it. But HE does. And that's his choice. My son has hair down to his shoulders. He's handsome that way. If he wants to cut it, he will do it for himself. And any partner that dates him will love him for being himself. That's what this boils down to. It's not about fitting in with what society tells you to do it's about being true to yourself. And authenticity is the most beautiful thing a person can offer the world. If you're offended by women with short hair maybe you need to take a look at yourself and why you have such narrow-minded ideals
