Nothing has put off beginner guitarists like acoustic guitar. The strings can feel like bridge cables to new players, often they get bought a cheap acoustic guitar pack that comes with cheap picks and a thin nylon strap, and the guitar has a stupid high bridge and the neck is bowed so deep that the action makes it impossible to play for beginners without cramping their hand. Always go to electrics and spend a small amount of money getting the guitar set up. Anything you can learn on acoustic as a beginner you can do with electric, and when you get strong enough on electric the transition to acoustic is so easy

Acoustic guitar for me is practical, it is good to start the hard way, it is hard to make bar chord in acoustic but worth it if you practice. Acoustic is the best beginner guitar for newbie if they transfer to electric it is smooth.

Joshua Lessore: ya that can be the case, especially a parent who's not so knowledgeable about instruments will buy the cheapest thing out there,
or it's barely passable. i was somewhat fortune to start on a Martin my granddad paid 300 for back in the late 70's, he ended up giving it to me once i got to a certain age. in my case i was 11, 2003. i couldn't quite play it at first because it was a dreadnought, and for a child a Martin Junior or Taylor Junior is the better choice for a student under 13. that being said it felt really good, once i got around to figure out how to sit down with it, the strings on it didn't hurt at all, or the frets.
the guitar was just too big for me to play,
but i always appreciated it, because i could've easily got stuck with a piece of garbage. these days beginners have it much easier even compared to when i started,
the only problem i have today is the way people teach beginners is absolute garbage.
but ya Acoustic can be somewhat challenging for a beginner,
unless you get something that's fairly good quality like i had, or one of Taylors Academy series which has a smaller body than i had.
for Electric Guitar, 200 Euro or dollars is good enough for a beginner to start these days. with Acoustic, id recommend looking at the 300 dollar range or higher,
because it'll feel better in the hand than the CD60.
but I've actually played around with one in person, it's not bad, it's decent enough,
but a beginner is gonna want to be inspired to play. that's why for Acoustic, the Taylor Academy 12E is perfect for a beginner. even Intermediate players have played it live.
for 359 it's a steal. that being said, learning on Electric Guitar isn't that much easier,
it's just that it's easier to learn on because it's closer to the body.
but your fingers are gonna hurt a little bit regardless of which one you start,
I've seen just as many people quit on Electric.
because just like on Acoustic, there are plenty garbage Electric Guitars out there.
it's mostly what a parent is willing to buy for a kid or teenager is the main factor,
even my parents didn't, it's not that they wouldn't have, they just didn't have the money to buy something decent. that's where my granddad comes in.

Here's what I dealt with when moving from acoustic to electric.
    1. Mute strings you don't want to ring out. Even a light touch will work.
    2. Hammer on, pull offs, and tapping work way easier.
    3. Some guitars have a tremolo / whammy bar.
    4. There's no sound hole for sand, pebbles, and your pick to get stuck in and rattle around in the guitar.
    5. Strings are a lighter gauge and easier to bend and vibrato.
    6. Learn the knobs on the amp, gain, EQ, treble, bass, reverb, volume, etc.
    7. If a guitar has more than 1 pickup, there's usually a selector switch for choosing which one, or a combination of two.
    8. The tone knob goes between muffled and clear, and everything in between.
    9. Volume knob does what you think it does.
    10. You can do pinch harmonics.

Obviously the Electric Guitar is the easiest to play for beginners cause it tends to be more properly setup & the thinner strings help alot with playing it. You can make your Acoustic play like an Electric by using the lightest gauge of strings.

I'm looking to learn to play guitar, and this is my dilemma. Personally, here are my thoughts.
I like the sound of electric guitars much better, there is so much variety with what you can do, different pickups, amp effects, pedals, tremolo bar, etc. With acoustic guitar there is not as much you can do to change the sound. I don't want to say acoustic guitars are boring, but just very vanilla, mostly for strumming chords, whereas electrics are great for both rhythm and lead parts. The biggest benefit for starting with electric, I think, is that the strings are lighter so you end up spending more time learning technique, rather than having to worry as much about finger conditioning and getting used to the discomfort of the tough acoustic strings. Electric guitar can also be played unplugged or with headphones so you don't disturb others while practicing. On the other hand, for performing you need an amp and a cable, and an outlet to plug into, whereas you can play an acoustic just about anywhere. Acoustics are also more suitable as a solo instrument to sing along with whereas an electric isn't as good for performing by yourself without a band. I still think I will go with an electric.

I just bought an electric. I need it to practice at night. I may have to tie up steel and nylon strings in such a way that the bridge pick up will pick up steel while my hand plays nylon. I can only play one finger tremolos on nylons. Also, I love thick necks, when my whole hand feels full. I may have to glue something onto the neck. Also, the neck on my main guitar is asymmetrical.

  • @williamgregory1848

Let’s start with the more obvious similarities between acoustic and electric guitars. Both an acoustic and electric guitar have six strings, tuning pegs that allows you to alter the pitch of each of those six strings, a fretboard and frets.
There are also obvious difference, such as electric guitars having pickups or metal bars on the body of the guitar to “pick up” the vibrations of the guitar strings and convert them into electrical signals played through an amplifier, or how acoustic guitars are a bit thicker and bulkier in their construction, whereas an electric guitar tend to be flatter.
Whether you start out on acoustic or electric guitar, both of them require a commitment on your part to learn and practice. Regardless of whichever variety of guitar you choose, you’ll adopt a new vocabulary of chords, scales, and techniques that can be applied to both acoustic or electric guitar.

@Fender, this is a useful vid, but you didn’t mention scale length. A 25.5” neck is a very different playing experience than 24.75”. For beginners, the shorter scale is usually easier to play (unless someone has insanely large fingers that would need more space). And some necks are wider (such as on classical style guitars) - for me, there’s no way I could play a wide classical fretboard. I would have failed as a beginner. You mentioned thinner necks, but that’s extremely vague. Thinner can mean several things on a neck.
I wish you’d add and clarify these points and repost this video. They are hugely important details that can lead a beginner to struggle and fail if they select the wrong size scale length and fretboard size for them.

Is that squeaking noise when she plays the acoustic the first time in this video normal? That will drive me nuts. I don't think I heard that when she was playing the electric.

I'm not sure if it's the current war in Ukraine but all I can hear her play is Zombie by the Cranberries with the acoustic guitar

Electric is better. You can hear the pick noises when strumming acoustic. It's annoying. Acoustics put you to sleep and electrics wake you up.

They make the same notes. Acoustic snobs always try to gate-keep.
