SHED RACING - Igniting the Emeryson

  • We've been trying to make the Emeryson more compliant with modern day regulations. Perfecting the starter motor has not been straightforward. Might need to give Allen Millyard a ring.

    Great stuff, I did not realise Paul Emery built single seaters, you have got to get this one sorted, and you will. I bought an Imp front wheel de-cambering kit from him in about 1970, a simple very clever idea, just lower the front wishbone pivot points, I had so much grip at the front I spun it twice. You are right don't copy the others ,be original, you learn more.

    • @peterwardle572
      @peterwardle572 9 місяців тому +1

      Yes I went to Paul Emery at Putney, London, and the kit was so simple I could correct the camber angle easily in the street, no garage or workshop, just a bit of spanner work. But I must add, Ivan is great, no edge, just do it, a great person, thanks Ivan.

    After seven months of working on my race Austin sprite mk1, I finally got it to start and run. It was a loose connection in the Chrysler electronic ignition system that initially worked and then didn’t. What a hoot when that beast fired up. Cherry bomb muffler alongside passenger door. Great satisfaction obtained from those projects.

    I've recently designed and built an electric starter system for a customer's Manx Norton engined BSA Goldstar project. I couldcsend a few pictures if you'd like.
    He's a mate as well as a customer. When I set up I use a pointer for roughing and whatever dti given the required level of accuracy. Sadly I'm packing up the little engineering company I built with my partner as it's no longer economically viable in the uk. Apparently, according to a friend it's because men tend not to believe that women are good machinists. No mind, I have one hell of a workshop for my own projects and a customer was saying the other day when I dropped off his job, he uses me because I get the job right and he's fed up of other companies cocking up.

    Decades back, I had a Simplicity brand lawn-tractor powered by a 1-cyl flathead B&S engine, perhaps 40ci/650cc? B&S wasn't fitting electric start, so Simplicity bracketed a small US GM Delco DC generator and always-on V-belt-drive. Maybe 8:1 pulley ratio? (So it had to be small to stand the RPM.) No compression release (true, maybe just 6:1 compression ratio). With engine running it made more than enough electricity. When starting it made barely enough torque to take the piston over the top. When damp I had to lean on the slipping V-belt. But mostly entirely satisfactory, entirely standard parts and strap/scrap iron, and probably lasted forever (it was 30 years old when I sold it and left town).

    My Riley came with a 'modified' magneto where some had tried to widen the slot that controls the advance/retard to get more advance from it. My rebuilder told me that won't work since the internals just won't allow more. That flux you talk about. You can only adjust the mag so much before it stops sparking altogether.
