    4:24 This is me! It doesn't show it in this video, but there was a big patch of gravel right under the front wheel when I turned it. You can see where the black car is parked in the gravel carpark, that's where it comes from.
    It also just started to rain. I turned the wheel too fast whilst doing the U-Turn, I was still in the "go fast mode" from the previous road.
    I also couldn't take my time because there was a big semi truck coming from behind on the slight downhill.
    Total damage: new mirrors, some touch-up paint, put the stock bar end back on, that's all. Frame sliders are great!!
    I could pick my bike up alone, but asked the guys watching to help me to avoid further scratches to it.
    The front and rear brakes were on maybe 5% (very loose front brake on this bike).
    Lessons learnt?
    Reset your brain after going fast before doing slow speed stuff I guess.

      Not sure why nobody is saying this but, you don't take a U-turn with your right hand on your front brake. That is literally how i was teached doing a U-turn on my bike. First gear. Little bit of gas. Apply rear break to adjust speed to about 12 km/h.
      Like i'm a noob who has only done two lessons on the actual road so i should probably shut up and learn but i don't get how you fall this easily with a bike.

    Been riding about 18 years since I was 17. Back in my safety class, my instructor told me something that still sticks with me every ride. Countersteering. When you turn, you’re not just pushing the way you want to go, pull back on the opposite handlebar. It’s so counterintuitive but it really helps with leaning into faster turns with stability. Curvy roads where you can comfortably go 25+ is a great way to practice. This skill would have helped several of these beginner riders.

    • @kd350
      @kd350 Місяць тому +1

      Body english helps the front tire track. Weight the inside peg and torque the tank with the outside knee along with counter-steering. If I'm too hot, I add the body torque not more steering. Purely counter steering cups your front tire and the front will tuck instead of both tires sliding. Remember, the rear brake's your friend.

    The video at 7:40. Saw that on insta g. Excellent work by the POV rider to not dump or crash. I get the pause on getting off the bike, checking to make sure it doesn't drop, no fuel spilling, a moment to self assess. Got to love how casual the cop and the wrecker driver are, soon as the crashee is mobile. Speed the only real factor, here. Probably could have been better marking further from the stalled vehicle, but 'racing' on public roads. Have not seen any track footage from this rider on their feed, maybe she try that for a change.

    Just for fun I thought to analyze this vid too. 1# Rider's hand position seems off, not much lean and going wide put him in that situation. 2# Might have actually slid on the painted stripe on the road's edge - wet painted surfaces are dangerous. 3# Going wide. 4# Slow speed maneuvers going wrong. 5# If you can't see what's behind the corner slow down, it's cool to carve some corners but those are public roads, never go full-out unless you're riding on track. 6# Slow speed maneuvers, wear gear. 7# Going wide, bad entry position perhaps. 8# Probably lack of progressive breaking. 9# Bud still has a way to go with the how he handles road rage and also spent too much time being distracted by what the offended driver was doing - if you ever do something that may anger someone just be gone before stuff escalates. 10# wear gear, good reaction except the stopping. 11# Public road awareness, good job. 12# ? 13# When you see someone crossing over to your lane predict what may happen also eyes on the road do not look back, there's traffick. 14# Wet road and maybe whiskey throttle control. 15# Good position and being sharp. 16# Not much to talk about 17# Going wide; Scientifically it's been kind of proven that bones are pretty weak to being crushed with a rolling 1000+lbs so why would anyone think it's a good idea to attempt doing saves with your limbs. 18# Public roads, eyes wide open, predict prevent and act before something happens. 19# Oof. 20# Slow speed maneuvers, clutch control. 21# Help people if you can just like that rider :) Ride safe folks, cheers!

    I'm 46 and decided to finally get my first bike. I bought a little Honda Shadow VT600 bobber for under 2k. I haven't taken it on any roads yet. Just been walking it around my yard learning the clutch friction zone and also learning to take off from a dead stop without killing it. So far so good, but I have a long way to go. I live out in the country where there's lots of country roads to practice but for right now I'm sticking to my yard until I feel confident enough to take it down them roads. Right now my confidence isn't strong enough but it's there. Being that it's a small bike and I'm a 6' tall 210lb man, I bought some 6" forward controls and floorboards for it, to make it a bit more comfortable for my legs.
    I have 2 pair of steel toed boots (Harley and CAT), genuine leather chaps and jacket, a good pair of gloves, and a DOT approved German half helmet with goggles and also a hard full face mask to wear in place of the goggles to keep from swallowing bugs or other debris. I plan to also get a full helmet too. My older brother is slowly teaching me to ride. We haven't got into cornering or leaving first gear yet. Right now he wants me to get comfy with walking it around the yard using the clutch friction and dead stop takeoffs and stops in first gear. I admit, the front brake does scare me a bit, and the clutch / throttle combo does as well. I'm confident that I'll pick up on it though. Gonna take a bit of time and practice.

      Take the MSF. It's worth it and gets you that initial XP. Then you can move to going up and down those county roads. That's what I'm doing -- had a 660 2cylinder for 2 weeks now. Did MSF. Spent a week just riding in circles going ~25. Then started making coffee and gas runs on the county roads ~50mph. Maybe next week I'll try the interstate for the first time, or not. I'm in no hurry.
      I can commute entirely on a county road, so I'm in a good spot. Just building up that muscle memory.
      Next Spring, I plan to go back to the same MSF folk for a follow-on course to get better at counterweighting and the hard slow speed stuff on my bike. Also break any bad habits I've formed in the interim.

      @@niallk9336 I started doing laps around my yard the day after I wrote my OP. Then I took it up and down a country roads for the first time and learned to shift, which wasn't hard since I've ridden 4 wheelers and dirt bikes before, except without a clutch.
      The clutch took a lil getting used to but I think I got it now. I got a pretty good feel for my bike now. Now it'll be easier to learn other things. I don't really have any big parking lots near where I live, so I'll have to ride to town if I wanna start practicing u-turns and such. One thing at a time though.

      It's mostly about vision. I don't know how long you've been driving cars, but I can predict when a car is going to come over on me.... either from a lane change or turning at an intersection. Don't go faster than your vision and ability to react. Always assume the curve has a danger on the other side and go the appropriate speed.
      Even in my car, I only do hooligan stuff on the interstates. It's perfectly safe to go triple digits up there. But on the surface streets? Drive like something is always going to happen, and you'll be fine. Regardless of vehicle.
      My only fear with a motorcycle is being rear ended at a stoplight.

    you should 'always' assume theres 'marbles' in a median, road junction etc, when making a uturn or even a regular turn if your line is outside normal traffic tire travel .. theres 'always' a patch wheres all the gravel and trash accumulates and its about like ice ...

    • @John_Ridley
      @John_Ridley 2 місяці тому +1

      Mandatory training in the US is all low speed parking lot stuff. They tell you about target fixation but I'm not sure they cover countersteering. You kind of just have to figure that out for yourself.
      I knew about target fixation but until it happened to me a couple of times so I knew what it felt like I didn't really have control of it.

      Considering no part of his body slid on the road, I'm not sure why you would claim 'he was sliding down the road on his face'. He was fully protected with high quality gear, and that kept every part of his body from making contact with whatever road you envisioned in your head.

  • @niallk9336

    12:50 I can't agree. He did cut off the SUV... ok... it happens... but then he adds insult to injury by making this enormous cushion. He had PLENTY of space at 12:35 to slot in behind the SUV. But he decided to cut them off AND THEN go slow ? Bruh. What are you doing ? He did not need to slow down as much as he did... he's messing with the SUV at this point out of ego. Because he doesn't like the SUV tailgating. But he cut them off and then keeps going slower ? So the SUV is just going to tailgate more ??
    He may as well be brake checking the SUV with the multiple semis you could fit between him and the red truck.
    I don't know what turn he's slowing down for... it's a straight shot to the merge point. He's creating a narrative to hide that he's messing with the SUV after cutting them off.
    And sure enough, when the SUV responds in douchekind ... ohh suddenly he doesn't need that space for braking anymore. It's perfectly safe to gun it and merge in close quarters after all.
    And then he continues to escalate after the merge.
    The SUV is a douche, but this entire thing was started by and repeatedly escalated by the motorcycle.
    This guy is going to get himself in trouble one day, and it's hard to feel bad for him.

    • @niallk9336
      @niallk9336 22 дні тому

      19:10 Also disagree. I would be in the middle. Half the reason that car doesn't see him is because he is wide... he's not where that driver expects to see headlights.
      You still have PLENTY of time to get from the middle to the outside... and he will also sense you sooner on his front quarter panel and likely abort the lane change. The act of making that center to outside switch in concert with the car entering your lane simultaneously also aligns the motorcycle to lane switch right... not ideal (and we can't see his own mirrors if there's a car there or not), but it's an additional escape route that only requires more throttle once you move with the car.
