- These are some songs from the DVD "Heritage of Māori Songs"
I saw these and really felt like they need to be promoted. The haka seems to take dominance in pākēha understanding of māori culture and waiāta. I think that the world is more interested in the uniqueness of poi and rākau.
The first song is Titirorea performed by Ohinemutu Cultural group.
The second song is Tiramarama by St. Joseph's Māori Girl's College.
This is Ohinemutu Cultural Group. Recorded at te wharenui o Tamatekapua. My great grand aunty Leola Walker Hayes. This was recorded around 1982. Male leader my brother inlaw Wiremu Tani Tuwairua Williams. Love and miss you xx
Arohanui! Good to credit those who it came from! Your whanau are very talented!
Your aunty awesome lady I'm one of them in this video .
Your aunty awesome lady and brother inlaw awesome as well great memories I'm one of them in the video.
Wow this bring back a lot of memories learning the rakau when I was a child..Not to mention I decend from Ohinemutu. Thank you for sharing this beautiful memory If I look closer Id probably see some aunties lol
My mum was from NZ and married a USA navy guy. I remember as a little girl with my 2 sisters and mum learning the stick dance and beating ourselves up with our poi balls! (big red pincushions on the end of white chunky yarn) I have loved the grace and beauty of the maori women- especially in song and dance. Watching mum and her sisters when they would come visit from Samoa and NZ was such a treat. Ive been searching youtube for more of these traditional dances! I want my children and grand children to know more than just the haka! (Not that the haka isnt a powerful way to bond with your heritage)
Thank you sooo much from the middle of nebraska... in the middle of USA...far far from where my heart feels my home is.
goofeymaloofey YOU AND YOUR SISTERS ARE DOING SOMETHING TAPU (if you can read māori)
very beautiful,
you dont have to be maori or even kiwi/pakeha to feel little tears of joy at the spirit of maori music and performance.
thank goodness Victorias empire ran out of steam when it did or we may never have heard most of these songs!
I havn't played the stick game since I was little I have forgotten so much. Thanks for this.
Wow ive not done this for years. I think since primary days.
Love to see more of the 80s video of ohinemutu cultural group
so brings back alot of memorys mosgiel maori childrens club
This is lovely! Thank you so much for uploading it. I remember teaching a simple version of the stick dance to a Brownie Guide troop in 1983 - they loved doing something so unlike the usual English games.
Omgggg
I loved tirakau when I was little. Down the coast at Delamere Cup kapa haka, Omaio would do tirakau lots of beats tricks and throws, and Waioweka would do tititorea, lots of steps and stances combinations. Really creative.
I remember seeing this when my Aunty was in it. Brings back suck beautiful memories
this is amazing we are doing this in a play at our school! very good >>>
wow it has been along time since i have heard of the poi sticks..so love this and you dont hear it from other maori cultures groups the way they do it..amazing love it and so original..

Hello, MBN .
Please allow us to use the above UA-cam video on our show! The content will be used to explain.
We are a program to travel to New Zealand by light plane. We met the Maori in New Zealand.
When I saw the Maori "Haka" dance, I thought it was so attractive.
So I want to use this UA-cam video as a video to introduce "haka dance" to the viewers.
The broadcast is scheduled to 6th of August
I am looking forward for you positive answer.
Thank you.
this reminds me of when i went to new zealand and saw this sort of thing live. it was awesom!!!!!

I like how they dont shout... like the groups do now! .. ka pai :)

Beautiful video!
Very nice but the second song (poi song) is Tihore Mai Te Rangi, not Tiramarama.
Also not being sung by St Joseph's Maori Girls College, no offence to the lovely ladies and gents performing but they're a bit old to be students of SJMC
