Thanks for putting Alien Isolation in for a shout.. man what a game that was! I’ve played many horror/thriller type games over the years, but no game made me feel so scared and intense the whole way through. I’m not talking about the odd jump scare here and there which nearly all horror games have.. I’m talking about the whole experience all the way through from start to finish. If nobody out there ain’t played it but are thinking of playing it I highly recommend it. 100% the most underrated game on this list by far!
Silent Hill and Japanese game Siren, have put me off horror games completely, just too intense and unforgiving with no light hearted moments…strictly for masochists….
yea, every other game makes me feels like I'm controlling a character. Witcher 3 is the only game I felt like I am Gerald. No any other game makes me feels this way.
Agree to disagree. A lot of people still haven't even played BB because it's a PS exclusive. I still have never played a game that has gripped me like BB does. The world building, the incredible Lovecraftian story and the combat are all still untouched imo. W3 is fun and I love the lore and characters, but I hate the tedious mission structure stuff. It's just not for me.
I get this isn't the most popular opinion, but Witcher 3 has always been a very solid A for me (right alongside RDR2). But as someone who values challenging and interesting combat over just about anything else I will pick Bloodborne everyday.
@@williamwhitebirch9191 It's immediately assassin's creed because it has flashy stealth? I don't remember bullet sponge enemies and micro transactions. @@Ligmaballin No I was making a mockery of your silly assessment. Your argument about the world in Ghost of Tsushima reacting to your action is flawed. Narrowing the gameplay down to "running around 24/7" is just childish. Breathtaking visuals, amazing gameplay, great story (in my, and many others', opinion). Characters feel real, the npc react to your actions far more than they do in Ghost of Tsushima. Humans was always a very main threat in the series. As they would be in a real apocalypse as well. "Haven't seen that before" If you want something totally unique you should dislike Ghost of Tsushima for the same reason as well.

2:13 I highly disagree. Overwatch changed the videogame landscape and is still up and running. It gets so much flag, because the community really cares, and Blizzard is basically falling apart infront of our eyes. Whereas Uncharted 4 was looking good, but it's Gameplay felt old by that time and it's not even the best game of the franchise. I'd say that Uncharted 2 and even 3 are still better games to this date.
The only dissapointment right now is for Rockstar not patching or remastering RDR2 for ps5. This game so much deserves 60 fps and enhanced graphics on ps5
I think it's because game came out in 2018 and ps5 have been out for 3-4 years now they believe majority of people have already played rdr2 not alit going to complete the whole story again if graphics and fps are improved just my humble opinion
Wow. All this time I just assumed RDR2 won GOTY and to lose to God of War? What kind of madness is that? RDR2, IMO, is still the greatest game ever made. It's just complete in every way. Hell the fishing and hunting alone would be decent full games on their own.
The thing is rdr2 is a sequel… while gow was a insane reboot which also had better reviews and more sales i believe. Not to mention for the actual gameplay aspect , GoW trumps rdr2.
@@artetasson5971 elden ring did not deserve goty any more than gowr did. it was up in the air for what was going to win that year but I will say something. Sequels have a "curse of sorts" when it comes to goty. People love to keep the older game in their head when talking about the sequel, so if the sequel isnt better in literally every single way over the first game then its a negative amplified by 1000x. Same reason why rdr2 didnt win.
@sweetbabyrayso5262 I respect the take but as somebody who played both there's one key thing elden ring had over gow at the time that made it deserve goty more imo and that was how accessible it was compared to gow at the time (more players who can play the game the better and since it was available on most platforms its more accessible for the playerbase)
RDR 2 not winning that year just highlights the influence of PlayStation on the awards. That game in 2024 still is great and nothing is close to the details and how alive the world is.

I would say Ghost of Tsushima should have got 2020, even though im kinda biased on TLOU 2. Ghost of Tsushima is just slightly better in GENERAL if you compare it per detail. TLOU2 has a lot of flaws like you said and it was a big one on the Pacing especially some chapters feels like empty and unnecessary, but needed to bloat the gametime a bit. Unlike Ghost, even the sidequest have a meaningful stories and emotional lessons. The Main story of Ghost was so good, attention to detail ex. in Act 1 Jin was still honorable and easier to standoff Mongols, but in Act 3 he's already a Ghost and standoff is much harder since standoff is the honorable way to kill enemies. that detail impressed me. but yeah TLOU was just more hyped because the first one was a masterpiece
There is a clear difference in some of the games that won and didn't. Overwatch should be in a separate category. Comparing multiplayer only to single player only games just never seems right...
RDR2 deserved and should have one goty 2018 as its one of game that every people will remember after playing, gow was also good but rdr2 takes win when compared to all gameplay stuff, the only reason gow won goty in 2018 over rdr2 is because, in gow many fans witness the return of kratos who was considered dead before and now tehy can experience kratos in a new way of gameplay too so people were hyped and also gow was released in april of 2018 and rdr2 on oct of 2018 so thats also a reason why rdr2 missed it but still gamers still consider rdr2 the best.
Resident evil 4 remake even tho it's a remake it deserves game of the year as well. While it changes a bit on the story and has phenomenal graphics the game mechanics are more fluid and engaging a long with the new Parry system making this game a lot of fun
Im sorry, but you just cant say bloodborne is equally deserving as the witcher. Witcher 3 is probably game of the decade, on a completely different level, even when comparing to bloodborne. Also, god of war winning over rdr2 is pretty much a paralel to the case above, but gone wrong. Amazing game, but, rdr2 is on another level.
Agree with a lot of this list, particularly Ghost of Tsushima. Disagree with calling Overwatcj unbalanced trash - the first few years of that game were unbelievable fun and far from trash. The balance part could be argued 😂
The way he talks about Overwatch during this video makes me think he only knew about it more recently and idn't get to experience it when it was at its peak of populatiry and quality. It was something truly special and unique, which makes it hurt all the more that it has fallen so hard and it's now nowhere near what it once was. But back then I think the GOTY was well deserved.
Exactly. You have to be blind or a hater to say it was unexpected that it won. It was the number one game for over a year and it made a genre that many have tried copying. It was a slam dunk meanwhile he is like "somehow this unbalanced game won".
I think last of us 2 was deserving of game of the year. was an amazing experience and the gameplay was top notch. FF7 remake was my overall choice that year but I was OK with either of the 3 big games that year as they were all awesome
I don't need a game to win a nonsensical award to be among the best games. The games you mentioned are in my list of masterpieces, and that only matters.
The Witcher 3 GOTY far surpasses BloodBorne. It's a shame it came out the same year, but not by chance does it share the number 1 spot with The Witcher 3.

@@tano1670 not at all both games deserved goty and ofc for me too I wanted rdr2 to win but that time gow won for two reason that is kratos were finally returning after his end on last gow game and also gow got released on April while rdr2 were released on October so gow got more base than rdr2 at that time that's why however overwatch is still considered as the biggest robbery as it won over games like uncharted and dark soul which is nonsense.
Good video but I have to say that I (respectfully) disagree with a lot of it. 1. I find it very weird to have 2 games in a year on your list because it contradicts the entire "point" of the video. 2. I personally completely disagree that Bloodborne deserves it as much as The Witcher 3 in 2015 (despite also being a masterpiece) 3. I personally 100% disagree with Ghost winning over TLOU2 (even if I also LOVE Ghost) 4. You say things like "undeniably flawed" pacing etc with TLOU and that's just.. YOUR subjective opinion (which is fine but it's not "undeniable") 5. Spider-Man 2018 having ANY chance vs RDR2 or GoW is also something I 100% personally disagree with. 6. I hate OW these days too & I also think UC4 was robbed but saying it was "unbalanced trash" in 2016 is just ignorant tbh. The rest I pretty much agree on though 😎 (Edit): 7. another important thing to mention is that "GOTY" by TGA is just ONE out of hundreds of places that gives that award.. It's not the only one that matters and the only reason people believe that it is, is because it's a "high budget show".
Can't even believe how many people truly believe GoT should have won, sad to see how many emotionally immature people are in the gaming industry, just cuz they don't agree with a story they cannot handle they attack it with nonsense statements. Nothing they say will ever change the fact that it is one of the best games ever made in every aspect, the only 2 games I consider better than it are RDR2 and witcher 3, GoT wouldn't even make it to my top 50 games of all time even tho I liked it
@@atrevino90It's been 4 years but the argument was the execution of the story. Killing Joel was a good choice but they did it terribly, a lot of people was expecting Joel to die or already dead in the sequel. Abby was also being forced to be sympathetic but was overall unlikeable. I would have preferred more if they did the Thorfinn from Vinland Saga approach and had Abby lost her sense of purpose after killing Joel and develop it from there maybe finding a newfound purpose with Lev only to have Lev killed by Ellie then have a climactic battle and have Abby realizing on what she caused Ellie to become was also her before. Then she allows Ellie to kill her but advises her to take care of her loved ones after and not lose purpose after this, which gives Ellie a second thought. Ellie then lets Abby live but makes sure she leaves the place entirely or she will kill her this time. Idk whatever I do acknowledge TLOU2 good gameplay tho

2018 was probably the best year in gaming history ever. So, Rdr2 not winning is not totally illogical. However, considering it is one of the greatest game ever, something should be pointed out. God of War was released early in that year. So, everyone was familiar with it and fascinated by it. Whereas, Rdr2 came out probably less than 2 months before the award was given. Most of the people did not know about it in details. Rdr2 is such a masterpiece, it's tough to even understand the depth quickly. So, that played a vital role. I agree with most of these, except maybe Death Stranding. It was a fun game, sure, but far from GOTY material in my opinion. Also, as great and deserving of GOTY status as Uncharted 4 and Doom were, and I agree they both were, Overwatch at that time was nothing like what it is today, and back then you wouldn't find many people who played it and didn't agree it was deserving of that title.
For all those saying Witcher 3 was better than bloodborne never played bloodborne , both game are peak but saying bloodborne released in wrong year is ridiculous, bloodborne is the most requested game by gamers to be remastered ever and mark my words when it gets released all games will bow down to it
Depends, I have played both and in terms of gameplay bloodborne takes the cake but in terms of side missions, main story, the DLC's which all when combined together gives you around 100-150 hours of quality content and highly engaging story, it is hard to ignore. And not just "go there, kill that guy kind of missions" almost every mission in witcher 3 has its own story. Overall for me witcher 3 is better but if someone fancies gameplay above everything else bloodborne would be their pick.
If W3 was stuck in 30fps stuttering hell and was never released on PC, it would have a ton of people begging for it too. That isn't a good metric to go on.
Ghost of Tsushima would have won had it been about what players preferred, not critics. GoT was amazing in every level. The last of us 2 has just as many people that hate it as it does people doting it.
2017 was full of great games too, Nier Automata was truly revolutionary on the way the story is told, multi-layered and multi-perspective, combat is also challenging and fun; sadly it came out at a period where "open-world" gets all the hype.

Joel dying isn’t the issue. I loved tlou1 and went into tlou2 suspecting Joel would die and was okay with it. However, the way he died is so ridiculously out of character for him it’s insulting, he would never, ever give up his name like that, save anybody as he was honestly rather selfish

God of War Ragnarok was just a straight continuation of the first game that revisited many of the same locations and offered no innovation. It's a good game, but doesn't deserve a GOTY nod.
This is a braindead take. You could explore 5 realms in 2018 with 2 of them being optional. You can explore and experience all 9 realms in Ragnarok. All of the previously explored realms from 2018 are also different in ragnarok due to time frames changing. There's also new weapons, skills, the 9 shield abilities, and the roguelike Valhalla DLC. Thanks for putting Alien Isolation in for a shout.. man what a game that was! I’ve played many horror/thriller type games over the years, but no game made me feel so scared and intense the whole way through. If nobody out there ain’t played it but are thinking of playing it I highly recommend it. 100% the most underrated game on this list by far!
Silent Hill and Japanese game Siren, have put me off horror games completely, just too intense and unforgiving with no light hearted moments…strictly for masochists….
There's no way The Witcher 3 was going to be beaten, it's in a league by itself
Bloodborne is way better, chump.
yea, every other game makes me feels like I'm controlling a character.
I get this isn't the most popular opinion, but Witcher 3 has always been a very solid A for me (right alongside RDR2). But as someone who values challenging and interesting combat over just about anything else I will pick Bloodborne everyday.

Most people who cry about overwatch winning did not play overwatch at launch.

From 2016 to 2018 Overwatch was one of the best and most enjoyable first-person shooters ever made.
people really dont realize how really amazing overwatch used to be in its prime.
bf 1 is by war superior....
When i played deah stranding it felt like a movie. It was very nice playing it, walking while making startegies and going on different routes as to avoid the enemies (I forgot the name, it think it was BT?)
Alan Wake 2 is AMAZING. I highly recommend picking it up if you haven’t already.
Love how the God of war 4 that doesn't really even feel much like a GoW game, won instead of a 10/10 masterpiece that is a RDR2
Thank you Sony for so many great gaming experiences😊
the witcher 3 is an amazing game but Bloodborne deserved the goty more, its just that good
To say bloodborne deserved it over Witcher 3 is mad!!! You video title says deserved it more and I can hold heartily say, bloodborne is no where near as good as Witcher 3. It’s facts whether you like it or not.
I personally disagree - there both great games ofc but we all have our own opinions and I feel like it comes down to stylistic preferences at this level of quality
Sorry but bloodborne ain't nowhere near witcher 3 level 😂 @gt7x
@@NarrowPathSign I’ve platinumed both and both are fucking goats but bloodbornes gothic lovecraft world and gameplay hits so much harder than Witcher 3
@@gt7x so in the best of 10, only 2 points for bloodborne..the rest, the witcher is better..not close
@@NarrowPathSign best of 10? Elaborate
I am sorry but God of War Ragnarok SHOULD NOT have won game of the year, because Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the best RPG of all time. What Larian Studios did with this game has set a bar so high it will probably never be reached again.
Totally agree…
bg3 was 2023
I agree with most of these, except maybe Death Stranding.
Red dead 2 wad the only game on this list that was the best game in that year and still holds up as one of the best games ever made
Just because overwatch 2 sucked doesn't mean overwatch didn't deserve to win in that era
Witcher 3 deserved to win 10x over. Amazing game
That isn't a good metric to go on.
they both trash
I have played bloodborne, Witcher 3 is better in my opinion, but they are really tough to compare to each other
One is a soulsborne, the other is an open world RPG.
They are different genres, they can't be compared.
Bloodborne, RDR2, and Ghost of Tsushima are all S++ tier masterpieces.
What is the game on the thumbnail
Just cause 4
While I was disappointed that god of war ragnarok didn’t win, I knew it would be tough competing with Elden Ring.
The only 2 I agree with is Red Dead 2 & Ghost of Tsushima. As for me Ghost of Tsushima has wiped the floor with Assassin's Creed
Agree with a lot here but LOU2 is probably the best storytelling and pace etc ever. A brave story that takes you on a journey of absolute rage at the writer, to complete aw……
RDR2 completely overshadowed GOW GOTY award after winning 4 awards. And the Sales were crazy it felt like yesterday.
Year 2023 is a golden year for gaming which contains great titles like
Baldurs gate 3,
Alen wake 2,
Star wars,
Zelda,
Spiderman 2,
Dead space,
RE 4 Remake,
FFXVI and much more.
half of these are shit
Alan Wake 2 is not great, overhyped sweet baby game.
@@justynazawadzka5802Absolutely horrendous take, by far the best game in the past decade
If wukong doesnt win goty im no longer taking the award serious there aint a game out that comes close to it this year
RDR 2 even deserves to be the game of the decade 🫡
Ghost of Tsushima hurts me the most
Im sorry but last of us 2 deserved more the goty, it’s the most immersive and emotional experience I had with a game, it’s amazing what they did, I think it got a lot of hate because people didn’t want Joel to die and then started to nitpick anything that happens in the game, ghost of Tsushima is amazing but it isn’t as remarkable as last of us 2
Joel dying isn’t the issue. I loved tlou1 and went into tlou2 suspecting Joel would die and was okay with it. However, the way he died is so ridiculously out of character for him it’s insulting, he would never, ever give up his name like that, save anybody as he was honestly rather selfish
@@Primalham-pz2iz the one who said his name was tommy not him, also they didn’t seem to be hostile towards them so I don’t think it was that stupid to say their names, I admit there is a little bit of plot armor when Dina falls of the window in Seattle but besides that I don’t see any problem with the story.
Fully agree with you 100% GOTu was an amazing game that transforms the player into a Samurai but what TLOU 2 did I still remember Abby and the kid at the beach when Ellie left them as if she forgave them for the brute that Joel was. In that moment she knew though she loved him he took something away from Abby and that song in the end wow just wow no movie,no series, no form of electronic entertainment can make you move like that. The last of us 2 simply put art!
@@blakechradini7235 lmfao no movie lol u obviously dont watch enuff then tlou is rehashed a million times nonesense
@@808nemecis this a sentence 🤦♂️
Horizon Zero Dawn
A Plague Tale Requiem
Problem with these awards is that if a game had poor marketing or few people played them because they got swayed by hype to other less stellar titles, it doesn´t get the deserved number of votes from critics and regular people to push them 1st place.
Ragnarok was amazing and took many steps to improve on 2018.
have you even played the game?
@@GuyInWalls Of course. Have you?
@@enzomartino2038 Everything you just said reinforces what I mentioned. It wasn't innovative - just iterative improvements. Elden Ring was a completely new take on the Souls formula.
@@pureshooter7477 so what could they have done differently to be more "innovative" without ruining the IP? And I'm a souls fan, you could say ER was just an expansion on the idea that came from the ringed city since it was a massive DLC that had huge open areas and somewhat open world elements.
