Saw your video about pouring beer at the base of cucumber plants - it works I have been doing that for years but I pass the beer through my kidneys first. It is called the Canadian way to grow cucumbers.

They are really suckers as they turn into flower producing vines. So keep as many as you can in my opinion but prune to manage size.

Our pickling cukes are doing the same in zone 7! We have TONS of bees on those plants, so I highly doubt it’s a fertilization issue like google claims, but weirdly one plant has way more deformed cucumbers than the other 3. I was wondering if that was a sign that the plant is reaching the end of its useful life cycle.

@@olgas2332 interesting! Im not sure what zone im in I live in northwestern Pennsylvania (right on the border of Pennsylvania and ohio) maybe zone 6.. Gary is amazing, I cant say that enough. @@simpinainteasyRHEC we’re by Gary, and it has been super hot and humid, so the fungal diseases on the tomatoes and peppers are going nuts, sigh. I do as Gary says and use Espoma for side dressing every couple of months and a liquid fertilizer every 10 days or so (Texas Tomato Food, it’s magic). I also think I’m going to try shade cloth on the cucumbers next year once temps hit 90+.
This is our first year gardening at a local community garden - unfortunately we didn’t find Gary right away so made some mistakes early on, but hopefully next season will be better.

@@olgas2332 awe, that's awesome though! Last year was my first year, then we took a leap of faith and scaled out to a 100ft×100ft (including paths to pick and care for) on a friends "farm" (not so much a farm anymore, but 🤷‍♀️) and after me and my husband turned our backyard into our first ever garden last summer successfully he was ready for a challenge. This is our 2nd year, so far so good, but im sure luck and wonderful guidance & knowledge has been a major part of our success. Praying for a good harvest, but to be honest, just feeling secure when it come to feeding my family, well, that's priceless. I wish you much success in your space too, lord knows its gonna be challenging.

I converted to all raised beds in the back yard or main garden and I didn't leave a good place to put the cucumbers in lol. I ended up planting them in between 2 rows of determinate tomatoes and they've been almost hidden from the sunlight. One cucumber plant at the West end of the bed is doing fine the other ones are hidden away. I was feeling rushed and way behind due to construction of the new raised beds and didn't really plan out the garden this year I kinda just did it on a wing and a prayer lol.

Depends on where you live etc. Science tells us it's better to heavy water once per week and do natural wetting and drying cycles. If you're mulched etc, that should be sufficient. That being said you can always go out and look at the plants and grab a handful of soil and see of it actually needs it. You're garden will tell you.

Most outdoor plants dont mind watering daily but every other day, a good soak makes a difference. Plants survive with a watering 1x a week. They thrive with more waterings weekly. It just varies based on your soil, mulching, rainfall, etc. So its hard to say exactly.

Depends, I’m in the 100+ for 3 weeks now and mine seem to not produce any flower if not watered everyday. My plant is also getting attacked by aphids so I’ve been water spraying em off.
So far I’ve been only focusing on my cucumber and anything in pots. My basil’s in the bed seems fine without extra water.
In the 90’s you could get away with 1 time a week, just test your soil with your finger if it’s dry or not.

So we have over simplified, Nitrogen now, P and K later but dont really discuss how much to use when and how well the soil was prepared or how big the plants are and plant type. Peppers seem to benefit most IMO with P and K at mid growth. More nitrogen for them should be low at that point. For heavy feeders like squash, cukes and pumpkins, I tend to include nitrogen as they still need leaves and vine growth. I wish I could simplify it.

I figured any fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content wasn't going to advocate for the flower at this point of its fruiting season. Not Really as it is based on how much you pour in and what exists in the soil, stage of growth. I would not use Miracle Gro with a 24 nitrogen or blood meal with 12 Nitrogen. But when you have number below a 5-5-5, it is really hard to mess up things and over do it at any stage.

@@denisebayer8748 I am talking about out at the very end. With tomatoes you never want to do this (indeterminate) as this will stop all future growth up the one main lead (and we often prune the suckers as they will pull from the main vine, though I usually leave 2-3 suckers for extra growth, then prune the rest and either regrow them by potting or put them in the compost). With cucumbers, the main vine will produce gobs of male flowers, very very few females, but the side growth suckers have a higher percentage of female. Clip the far end on the main lead and the only future growth will be the suckers. I do not have hard data on this, but can see my own main lead have zero females, tons of males with bees on them, but only the suckers with female. Recently clipped the far end of the main lead after it had grown out 20ft plus some, and I had been clipping the suckers based on video recommendations, but some suckers still existed on various plants that have produced fruit. No more sucker pruning for me. So I literally just did this two weeks ago, so not enough data. I would recommend not pruning suckers, until you can see for yourself if you have more females on yours, then decide if you want to end the main branch growth. Best of luck. Please let me know if you do this on a plant or two and what your results are.
