Why in the world can't they make movies like this anymore? The characters are so full of emotion I was enthralled by them from the beginning.Somehow I never saw this one before. Thank you so much for bringing this to a new generation of viewers.
What an incredible director Jean Renoir is. I've never seen either Dana Andrews or Ann Baxter so completely unlike their standard movie-stars selves. They're both always good and yet, who'd have thought that they could play such innocent characters so well? Renoir is so concerned with his people and their relationships. The dance scene is so lovely. Thank you, so much for sharing this .I'd never scene it before.
He was 31-ish and she was 17-ish when they made this film. They both seem so natural in their roles. I've zeen it before. I know our destination but I enjoy the journey greatly. This is a very, VERY well done film. A good one, too!
This film is a true masterpiece. Superior performances, story, and authenticity, too. It couldn't have been easy working in the Okefenokee Swamp, either. Many, many thanks.
Never saw this before. Amazing cast. Dana Andrew’s was so young. I swear I think he was a better actor when he was younger. I was really impressed with his portrayal. Wonderful, amazing film.
Such a simple but wonderful movie, so touching and heart warming. Ann Baxter and Dana Andrew's were superb. One of the classiest films of the 40s that I've seen. Thank you dear UA-cam for this great upload!!!
@duvidl 12 minutes ago (edited) I have a special feeling for Walter Brennan - we were both born in Lynn, Mass and grew up in Swampscott, Mass. He won three Academy Awards and should have won another for this performance. This is certainly one of his best. And it was directed by Jean Renoir who also directed what I think was one of the greatest films ever made - Grand Illusion. Thank you so much for this beautiful upload!
First off, thank you for sharing this. I'd never heard of it but was surfing for something to watch when I spied the names of Walter Brennan and Dana Andrews. Whoa! This is the one I want to watch! Then while viewing I see Ward Bond, John Carradine, and Anne Baxter too. So glad I did too!!
Although the world class director Jean Renoir never achieved the heights of some of his French masterpieces when he emigrated to America to continue his career, Swamp Water, his first American film is excellent. So is The Southerner from 1945. Renoir did not get along with the studio heads here in America.. Renoir found it difficult to adapt to efficient Hollywood shooting standards, insisting on allowing a large number of takes from the actors. Renoir claimed in his autobiography that due to overindulgence he was fired by Zanuck one morning and rehired the same evening. After he stopped making films here, his next film, The River, the first color film made in India, is as good as any of his previous French masterpieces. It's also on UA-cam.
Had this been made today it would not have been the same film. They would have had to add a car chase or a naked romp or some other bit of sensationalism to get theater seats filled. A good story, well told by talented cast and crew. I much prefer old movies.
Hated the scene with the kittens. Really thought someone would rescue them. I also thought they were too rough in handling the kittens. No regulations in those days. But, an entertaining movie.
You said it! 😀 Walter Huston was my Grandmas cousin, he was 10 yrs older than gran and passed away before i was born. i always remember the photo of him in the family album. cheers
A superb cast. Seeing Anne Baxter as a young woman, girlish and petite, yet still casting an aura of a sexually attractive female, amazes me as her astute ability of projecting a persona.
In the first few years of tbe show Naked and Afraid they put a team in a southeastern US swamp. The worst conditions any team had had to face. It was during a storm system that wouldn't stop dumping rain. Every time they found a patch of dry land it would be swamped within a few hours. What it did to their feet was horrible. There had been miserable places but the American swamp was the worst at that point. Can't recall if they lasted the entire 30 days or not. Medical might have pulled them out. I recall them taking turns standing on a little bump of earth sticking out of the water just to get their poor feet up out of the water for a few moments.
Come and sit by my side if you love me. Do not hasten to bid me adieu, for I'm leaving the Red River Valley and the girl who has loved me so true. The music is Red River Valley. The lyrics sad and somber. Played as background music and at the dance.
@@dtaylor939 Even movies like this one has an agenda to push, like true love, loyalty, respect, devotion, simply doing the right thing no matter the challenges you may face, etc. I could go on forever.

Here is yet another gem that has been hidden away. Love seeing these works that seem to be put away and forgotten.

Childhood memories. Thanks for watching!
I like this Movie.. Thank You😊
Great film! Thank you!
There was some intrigue going on in that town near the swamp, some of its citizens were real swamp rats. Good entertainment, great actors and story.
What a lovely film.
that's a nice swamp.....no flies, no mosquitoes, no ticks, no centipedes, no spiders, no midges, no gnats
Well, Dana did swat at one early in the movie! 😏
@@IMBrute-ir7gz But, it wasn’t kilt. 😂 Went on a living somewheres else.
It's man made.ofcourse they would forget the fine details. And besdes.the actors would have been eaten alive😊
Thanks for sharing !
