How to build a Series Cabinet Combiner

  • I like coming up with solutions for unusual requests. I had a client want to use four cabinets but their amplifier only has two output jacks. To solve this problem I built them a pair of cabinet combiners that will place each pair of his cabinets in series before the two pairs will be paralleled again in the amp.
This way all four 8Ω cabinets will be wired together as a single 8Ω load and will be powered through the 8Ω output jacks on the amplifier.
If you are not familiar with series and parallel resistance there are many great resources throughout the internet to better understand this. Ohm's Law is quite a loaded topic for a beginner but as a Guitar or Bass player, we really don't need to know all that to properly hook up our cabinets. What we need to focus on is a basic understanding of series and parallel resistance.
The easiest way to understand this is knowing that when two equal values are used in parallel the total resistance will be halved.
For example, connecting two 16Ω cabinets in parallel will yield a total load of 8Ω. This is why when connecting two 16Ω cabinets in an amplifier you will want to use the 8Ω taps (or jacks).
Here is a handy parallel resistance calculator you can experiment with.
    www.allaboutcircuits.com/tool...
When connecting two loads in series the resulting value will be doubled. Two 16Ω cabinets in series will yield a 32Ω load. This isn't a likely situation you will ever encounter as all amplifier output jacks are connected in parallel. Daisy Chaining cabinets is also just a layman's term for connecting them all in parallel.
Since it is very important that tube amps see the correct load I would suggest doing some research to ensure you have a good grasp on the topic. This will help in getting better life and sound out of your amps!
Thanks for watching and if you have a unique problem I would like to come up with a unique solution. Send any requests to info@purgasound.com

Cool video man. You should do a video on how you do the Pustulus voice sometime.

I have a "JTM 45" built by a very good tech. I have two speaker outputs in parallel. I have two 8 ohm cabs. If I use both, I plug each cab into its own output and set the amp to 4 ohms. If I build what you have shown here, the two cabs would be 16 ohms...right? Series would add up the ohms vs running them with the parallel outputs which creates 4 ohms. Given how the amp is wired up to the different ohm taps, would there be any tonal advantages/disadvantages to making one of these boxes and running my amp at 16 ohms instead? I typically pick an 8 ohm cab for a tone (one cab has GB's the other a blend of CB 65 and CB 75). On occasion I go all out and run both. Thanks!

How difficult would it be to make one of these to run 4 cabinets? I have 4 custom 1x12 / 2x8 cabinets that are all 8ohms and would love to run them all together.

My 16ohm amp has an internal speaker, but I added a DPDT switch and an external jack to be able to switch from internal to an external cab. However, that new jack is still 16ohms... If I wanted to be able to use my 8 ohm cabs could I basically just copy the wiring of this box to the inside of my amp with two 8ohm jacks in series? In this scenario, would these jacks have to be grounded on the chassis though? Or would I need insulation? finally, if I do this and I only use one of the jacks, but with a 16 ohm speaker that would be fine too right? Thanks!

Nice looking boxes, and excellent description. I've always had people refer to daisy-chaining as series here, maybe a regional thing?

Not sure about that. I have only seen through ports that are wired in parallel. In the case of guitar speaker enclosures and pro audio gear daisy chaining is always parallel. Somewhere and somehow there can always an exception to every rule. Thanks for watching!

How much are these? My amp has one 16 Ohm output and two 8 Ohm outputs. I have two 8 ohm speaker cabinets and two 16 ohm cabinets. is there a clever way i could run all my cabs on one head? I'll guess and say, plug the 16's into the 8 ohm outputs, and use a splitter box in the 16 ohm output for the 8 ohm cabinets?

How would I go about ordering one of these? I have a Mesa cab I’d like to run in stereo with a Marshall cab, but I never thought to do this. I can just stack another 8ohm 2x12 I have with the Mesa in series to make it 16ohm total and then can run stereo with the Marshall cab, correct? And there wouldn’t be any volume discrepancies between cabs? If so I need one lol.

PURGASOUND, 32 ohms in parallel with another 32 ohms speaker cabinet will = 16 ohms not 8 ohms. I'm not sure why they want to use a series parallel speaker cabinet rig because I'm guessing certain frequencies or tone you get from the series cabs and certain frequencies and tone you get from a parallel cab?

I think you may have missed part of my explanation. I only had 16 ohm cabinets in the shop to show how they worked. The customer wanted to use four 8 ohm cabinets with their amp. His cabinets only had single jacks and his amp doesn't go down to 2ohms nor does it have four output jacks. I built these two boxes so he can run each pair of 8 ohm cabs in series at a 16ohms per pair. Then he can hook up the two 16 ohm pairs into his 8 ohm output jacks. It isn't about tone as it is matching impedance. I've wired cabs in different configurations and never noticed a tonal difference. That's just my experience. Thanks for watching!

@@purgasound Two 16 ohm cabinets into One 8 ohm output jack = 8 ohms its not 2 ohms so I'm not sure how this customer is going to get down to 2 ohms. The output current on the speaker cab is going to be maxed out at a certain current level. I'm not sure if the amplifiers output current is able to DRIVE all those speaker cabinets correctly because it has multiple reactive loads even tho its the same impedance its different when one load at the same impedance compared to using multiple reactive loads in series/parallel adding up to the same impedance. The output power tubes are going to be Pulling current differently because the output transformers reflected impedance on the primary side is not going to be stable and fixed. Do you know what I'm saying?
