    Ok, let me put this conversation in context: I am 53 years old. When I graduated from college in 1987 we took photographs with film and paid a lot of money to get them developed. I don’t think we even had video? We didn’t have the internet, we didn’t have email, we didn’t have social media. The platform we had? Was a photocopier. Paper, staples, zines. And I’m not saying this to be a grouchy old person. I am saying this because I am a brand new UA-camr with a couple videos and a handful of subscribers and I’m THRILLED that I have any platform at all to make my videos with my iPad and a window and iMovie. This is the best time to be alive and be a creative, a maker, to have a message and find an audience! Listen to Robert! He knows of what he speaks. Have patience. Do the work. Have fun. Connect. Find your tribe. Create create create!

      You could afford a dime per copy for a photocopier? One of those rich girls, huh? We poor country guys were still using stone tablets and a hammer and chisel back in the early 1970s.
      A little older than you and also starting out. Picking the theme or niche is the hardest part.

    Roberto, as a 30 something starting out with a SMALL audience. I can vouch about first growing as a creator. There's SO much to learn and the numbers may come SO slowly and I'm grateful for everyone who joins me on my "discovery" journey when I'm still learning!
    For someone who hates public speaking, who trembles on stage in a HUGE choir, UA-cam has definitely help me grow as a person, whether or not I make it as big as you. This is very inspiring Roberto.
    Much respect,
    Dawn
    *UPDATE* my channel was stuck below 500 on my first 1.5 years and now it is still slowly crawling but much faster than before. So to small creators, don't think that your growth rate will remain the same. It keeps growing the more content you make and the more people you are able to reach. :)

    That's what I said to the people who in my 1k thank you video. They need to stop focusing on growth because that right is the fastest way to burn yourself out & not only that but demotivate you from making videos. I told this guy that because he was talking about quitting just because he was not getting as many views on his live stream or not getting to 1000 subs. I talk to him & even made a video dedicated to all small content creators to tell them the truth about how I went through the exact same thing & I showed what my channel looked like at the end. You have to put in the work & have fun with it because if you focus only on the growth than you start developing doubt, discourage, & wanting to quit which is a common thing I hear all the time. He finally heard me out & is still going & I'm so happy to had got through to him.

    I think you hit the nail on the head! It seems to me that your potential audience are the people who want to know who you are. So, if anyone is going to know you, you have to show up. That means making videos even if you think they suck. Maybe, I have been very lucky, but I have had very few haters. Most of the time, people are supportive.
    And also be honest with yourself. Give yourself a chance to grow and learn. And work on developing the relationships with the people who are trying to connect with you.
    Great advice as always. Thanks Roberto!

    I’m unpacking this right here and now because this spoke to me in a big way! First, we’re working on engagement and the kids being dynamic. I’m working on SEO, editing, and social media engagement.
    I burn out from time to time. But I get back. UA-cam takes guts, time, and attention. It is work. When a video does not work in way I work on it anyway. And in those instances I ALWAYS learn a new on the editor. That way I have the time in. I have my kids analyze their performances and we try to make it better the next time we can.
    In terms of staying in our lane I have thought so many times about doing something different for a boost. But I feel that pulls away from the work we’re trying to do. And may confuse viewers regarding what we are about.
    Thank so much for this. The kick in the pants I needed.

    I relate so much with the "you don't have to spend so much on this and that" thing. People keep saying that I MUST use Sony Vegas Pro or a certain type of editing software just because a certain big UA-camr did it that way. However, I was just starting out. I had no idea how to do cuts and voice-over, or blend my audio and video files together and etc. Sony Vegas was overwhelming for a newcomer for me.
    And in the end, as it turned out, the "first step" I needed was just to learn to use the very basic Windows Movie Maker first, just to get a feel of how editing feels like, and then take more steps from there. One step at a time. That's something people keep forgetting because they think everything is an instant gratification now - that they could get something done in just a click or a press of a button, without learning any skill. That's not how things work most of the time and people need to remember that.
    Edit: As for to answer the question of the day... Perhaps you could share some time management tips that you use? I have a dayjob and sometime I had to skip a week or two to make contents.

    4:37 is right on! A lot of changes the last few years have become frustrating for anyone looking to get UA-cam famous or even to just get monetized as a side stream of revenue. There's an attitude of entitlement from a lot of people, but then there are those of us who just get frustrated and unfortunately will make the comparison to other creators. There are a lot of people that disrespect UA-cam creators as well for this very same expectation...that it is NOT a REAL JOB or that you're just being LAZY. I love your quote that "comparison is the theft of joy" and it's something that I remind myself a lot whenever a new change at UA-cam occurs or one of my channels experiences an adverse analytical change, etc. I am a creative creator and so my niche does have a lot of arts and crafts competition, however, rather than negatively comparing my channel(s) to theirs, I try to learn from them when I have the time to dedicate to analytics and research. The bulk of my time, however, is spent editing content and enjoying the process. I value engagement here, but as you say....your whole focus should not just be about UA-cam only, even if you plan to have that become your main job. There are many facets to earning that audience and hopefully a paycheck. I think if we stop thinking that a channel is the end-all be-all and adopt to diversifying our brand, we can become better creators overall which helps fill out those 3 categories you spoke about. Thanks again for being real and congratulations on bypassing the 400k mark!

    Yah I hate being judge too. Dislikes on every UA-cam video is still affecting me. I would do better videos to avoid that or just ignore the hate. 🙏♥️😇

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets 5 років тому +2

      I get a dislike on my videos as soon as I upload, I know it's my hater and would like to know who it is. I do get others but I am used to it now but that one dislike that appears after a few seconds of my video being uploaded is annoying and obviously they did not watch the video, lol.
      You will get used to it, look at the thumbs up and try to avoid the thumbs down. Have a nice night.

      @FayeRapsYupITSME 5 років тому +2

      @@Loveofpets yes. It is so awful that after editing 2-4 hours for that 10 minute video, within a few minutes of uploading there's already a dislike. I took a week off because of it. And would now post daily uploads for the whole month. I love watching my own videos and seeing those dislikes is the last thing I want. Thank you for sharing your experience too and would definitely learn how to ignore it and always see the positive side. 💓

    I think this is one of the more original and honest commentaries on this subject. At the end of the day, just because the work has moved into the digital space does not mean that things suddenly come for free. You've got to work consistently for a while both to improve your craft but also to build a solid foundation. That foundation will more than likely include transferable skills that will secure you for the future in this ever changing industry. My pain point at the moment is remembering that done is better than perfect-I just need to start publishing everyday and move on with the next thing.

    Thank you Roberto, I agree 100%, keep on making videos is the only way to learn. I am really new, started January 4th, and unfortunately I watched to many videos on how to grow your channel instead of how to grow your knowledge and skill when i started. This made me have the totally wrong focus. As I did my 3 month evaluation I realized this, and now I am so much more inspired and have so much fun with my videos. This video would have been so great to watch when I started

    I love when you said ‘work with what you have’ 👍 totally agree. I use my phone to film and iMovie on my phone to edit. I use the free apps for making my thumbnails. Some people who know me keep on telling me to invest in a camera and a MacBook. I’ve set some goals, I’ll buy one item when I pass 1000 subs. The next one when I get to 5000 and so on 😊 it’s a hard road but I’ll get there 👍

Sharing this video in a UA-cam Facebook group I’m in. Things I want to learn for my 2nd year on UA-cam. Figure out how to put my videos into a playlist. Put cards on my videos. Improve my audio. I talk loud so my phone can pick it up. And I really like to figure out an upload schedule. I upload once or twice a week but I don’t ever do it on the same day.

    I could just hug you Roberto. All the stuff you said about the not sexy stuff that people do not want to do is very similar to what I have said to clients about course creation. No one wants to conduct learner analysis--it ain't sexy. No one wants to create objectives--it ain't sexy. No one wants to develop a training plan because yep you guessed it--not sexy. 10,000% everything you said ON POINT. The entire desire to get to the end without developing the skills is rampant in everything. I have over 20 years experience as an instructional designer and everyone just wants to get to the content creation part. I am a total YT newbie. I know I suck at creating videos right now. So what. I am willing to get the F up and press play so that I can actually learn. I do not care that no one is watching. And to be honest, I have had some crap go on and have not made videos for several weeks because I had to deal with stuff. So what. I will get back up now that things are not as hectic and swing the bat. QOTD - for me I think it is getting better at communication. I desire to hone all the skills you said we do not want to do because I am not concerned with growth in an instant. Thank you so much for these words. Hugs!
