    This has been the most effective tip I've seen in a long time. It is correcting so many problems that stemmed from this bad habit, e.g. not swinging forward far enough, not keeping my eye on the ball (especially if my shoulder raised before I made contact), and just not making a big enough swing.

    This is such an important tip. I have been comparing footage of my own forehands with those of RF, and my entire torso tilts to the right (1 o clock) on the forehand, and tilts the other way (11 o'clock) as my body uncoils in the followthrough. Roger stays more upright. I tilt the shoulder like Roger does. Now in correcting the body lean, I have to be careful not to lose the shoulder tilt. Body awareness is such an endless journey.

    And how do you train this motion?
    Answer:
    On the back swing, take the non dominant arm up and out, under the chin, parallel to the baseline if facing the net. This will automatically lower the hitting shoulder into a “tilted shoulder” position before hitting the ball.

    I watched your lesson and went out and used it today. Big improvement. The shoulder adjustment also improved my distance to the ball naturally, as well as helping my low to high. Great tip.     Good point. One thing that helps with this is not dropping non-dominant hand too quickly. Keep elbow of non-dominant hand higher will help with this alignment also.

    It's not an exaggeration when someone says that this takes the forehand to a whole other level instantly....been doing this for 3 days and is probably the best tip for a forehand that I've heard so far

    I'm guessing that because Roger uses an eastern grip, that makes him take the balls much earlier and lower and hence the shoulder angle

    Hi, very clear presentation thank you. I really started getting the angle when in started squeezing my right lat as the final stretch (pat the dog). The lata are our strongest muscle In our body per pound. If you squeeze you have to dip.

    Great video Jeff. But maybe there is an easier explanation?
    If you imagine accelerating arm and racquet by rotating shoulders, it's easy to see that racquet will move approximately in the shoulder plane, it will kind of draw a circle around the axis of your body rotation.
    If you want to swing horizontally, keep that rotation axis vertical. If you want to lift the ball up, tilt the axis towards the ball, and your swing will go down-up.
    Or, in other words if you allowed natural mechanics to work (didn't muscle), there is no way to make a topspin shot in your strike zone with your dominant shoulder up.
    Playing with the monkey drum before attempting to hit a forehand helps too :D.

    Thank you so much Jeff. I have a decent technic but in competition, due to stress and the fear of missing, I do that exact mistake you are describing. I loose a lot of power and waste a lot of energy. I think your tip today on shoulder/body alignement is going to help. Best regards from France!

    Jeff - thx for the tips here. I play a lot of golf too so I can relate to keeping those shoulders tilted. Perhaps you could provide a follow up video to the weighting of the legs. Loading the back leg and transferring to the front leg. I feel like that would compliment this video. Thank you again.

    It's a product of hitting off the dominant side foot. It is very natural to align the spine and shoulders in balance with where your weight is on your feet and this is why many do this....because they are hitting open and semi open stance forehands, the weight will be on the right foot. With your weight on your right foot, it is natural to align the spine and shoulders on that side. Conversely, this is why the shoulder tilt is not opposite on the backhand, which is because it is more common to hit neutral stance, but still have the weight on the right foot for right handed players. Cilic and many align the spine and shoulders towards the side your weight is on on the BH side...unless like you say the ball is outside the strike zone.

      Forgot to finish my point.lol. The reason rec players lift their dominate side early is because they pull off early instead of staying on their right side through the contact. Thus, this is very much a footwork and balance issue. It is important to understand root cause before making swing mechanic changes.

    Jeffe', I tried this, I was spraying forehands long all day. But I am in. I dreamed of Roger the other night. We were in a convertible mercedes. He was driving and turned to me and said, "Are you really critical of yourself?" "Sometimes, I am critical of myself and it leads to other criticisms. " "You hide it really well,:" he said, We were around a bunch of people, and I found it exciting that of all the people who played tennis, he was better than everybody(that I played with, and Jeff Salzenstein too).

    To keep the dominant shoulder down you have to ensure the ball is hit before it reaches a certain height. So, what comes first?? Finding and striking that ball while still relatively low, or focusing on the shoulders’ angle? I think the former is the cause, not the latter.

    I've noticed this when I'm hitting a court-wide forehand that the shoulder is naturally lower and the swing is a natural pendulum-like swing.

    Coaches say to treat your two handed backhand like a left handed forehand. I don’t see the pros hitting the two handed with the left shoulder below the right. Any thoughts?

    Seems like dropping the dominant shoulder may cause us to lean back a bit? I'm not sure if I do this or not but if I consciously do this, that's what it feels like...

    Hi Jeff (and others), I have a question even though this was posted a year ago. So I was always told to finish with elbow high because that's what sends the ball high over the net and deep toward baseline. My forehand, even though it has decent amount of pace and topspin, had often landed short, just past the baseline, and was only great for wide angles. Not much of a threat for higher percentage shots, so I am working on finishing with my elbow high. from trying it in the living room, it seems like my right shoulder always end up higher than the left by the time my torso is squared.
    Also, I have always been told to create space between my upper arm/elbow and my torso. Now you are telling me to feel my ribs? Can you explain the distinction here?

    Hi Jeff, how to hit powerful shoulder height forehands? I can hit really good forehands when the ball is at waist level, but when my opponent hits really spinny high bouncing balls, I loose the power! BTW does the non-dominant shoulder higher than dominant shoulder principle apply to high balls? If yes, how is it done, is that even possible? P.S I'm the 4 a.m guy from Taiwan at your last live session talking about Sharapova haha

      James Huang Well, I’m no expert however, yes the dominant shoulder should still be higher than the non dominant, even on high balls. However I would turn my waist a bit more than you normally would, and swing from low to high. When you follow through, either try to finish around shoulder height, do a windshield wiper, or if you are looking to return with a lot of top spin, go with a buggy whip.

    It's more to do with footwork, giving yourself ample space to hit the ball and prepping the torque from the waist. This CREATES THE TILTED SHOULDER. You don't deliberately tilt the shoulder. lol

    The other main reason Feder is dropping his shoulder is because he can assure himself of adding spin given his grip type...hope this helps
